by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 7, 2025 10:46 PM |
It's affecting The Summit area right now, which is the northernmost developed part of Pacific Palisades. Mostly middle and upper-middle class area, not heavily populated with very famous celebrities. I believe a childhood friend's younger brother lives up there, will have to check in with their family to confirm.
Garner and Affleck's homes in Brentwood (at eastern edge of PP) aren't threatened right now at all. If the winds blow this thing westward, as is thought to happen, it will be Malibu that will be hit next.

I’m seeing so much criticism of the people who abandoned their vehicles. It’s ONE WAY IN, ONE WAY OUT! Do you understand what that means?! If the fire is barreling toward you, you don’t have time to think. You’re abandoning EVERYTHING and running for your LIFE. Who among us doesn’t instinctively grab our keys when we leave the car? These people weren’t calmly planning their exit. They were in survival mode, acting on pure instinct, fleeing flames. And now some nitwits, sitting comfortably at home, have the nerve to judge them?! These people have lost EVERYTHING. Homes, memories, their sense of safety! Have a little compassion before you start throwing around your smug comments! This is a NIGHTMARE.

One of them stated he lost his house, but that his cat was rescued, he has his insurance papers, and he's safe. What else is he going to do but help? Not just sit there and cry. He said nobody likes their motorcycles cause they're loud, but today they're saving lives.

A few sobering facts:
1. The entire L.A. region has received less than a half-inch of rain in the past eight MONTHS.
2. Even by their own standards, this year's Santa Ana winds are unhinged: speeds up to 100mph expected tonight per the NWS.
3. They just issued an evacuation order for 30,000 people in/out the Palisades AS I WAS FUCKING TYPING THIS.

It would be getting just as much coverage, more if that’s even possible, because the homes would be closer together and people would be more resistant to leaving and there would be a tremendous number of deaths. Rich people know that have insurance and they can find a place to go. So maybe just be glad it’s not in a poor area of LA instead of making really stupid posts.

r160 the two areas are like 20 miles apart, so unlikely. However - the blowing of embers over many miles, in the LA area, could very well mean other large fires in between these two are possible.
r159 the Getty was allegedly built to withstand a large fire, this very type of event. It has special systems to protect the artwork within its walls. These are likely to be put to the test this week.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | January 8, 2025 3:38 AM |
It's on fire R163.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | January 8, 2025 3:39 AM |
Do you mean the Getty Museum (up off the 405) or the Getty Villa, down in Pacific Palisades and very close to the fires?
by Anonymous | reply 165 | January 8, 2025 3:41 AM |
Villa or Center?
by Anonymous | reply 166 | January 8, 2025 3:42 AM |
It's the Getty Villa museum that's threatened, although they're saying the collection and structure are safe. The Getty is the famous museum most people are familiar with. Two different museums in different places.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | January 8, 2025 3:42 AM |

NOPE! R178, they are not moved, you don't have time like that in a sudden fire. And I have been there several times, there are no fire proof enclosures. It's a small museum nestled in a canyon. Very much on the human scale with very little protection.

"The Palisades fire was initially reported around 10:30 a.m. in the area of Piedra Morada and Monte Hermoso drives, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson David Ortiz said. The blaze later jumped Palisades Drive and was burning on both sides of the road. Officials have not yet determined how the fire started, but it erupted during a high-risk major windstorm that created extreme fire conditions in the area. With low humidity and dry vegetation in the region, the winds created a perfect storm for fire ignition."

"We are used to wildfires here in Los Angeles. I have been here over 20 years and I have never experienced a day quite like this. The massive fire in the Palisades is still raging completely out of control and firefighters had enough problems trying to tackle that blaze.
There are three massive wildfires burning very close to densely populated areas.
I have spoken to people without power, they drive in their cars until they get a signal, and they are not sure what to do. People here don't know if they should go to sleep because they won't know if they should evacuate. They can see flames - but is it too close, and when is it too close? They have pets, they have children, they don't know where to go.
The wind is whipping through Los Angeles and that is what's fuelling all these blazes and making them burn out of control. The fire services are very strapped and have called for anyone on vacation or leave to state their availability and come back.
It is really wild here."

Celebrities are among those fleeing the affluent Pacific Palisades neighbourhood in Los Angeles.
Schitt's Creek actor Eugene Levy lives in the area and told local media he was forced to evacuate his home. “The smoke looked pretty black and intense over Temescal Canyon. I couldn’t see any flames but the smoke was very dark,” he told the Los Angeles Times.
Elsewhere, Police Academy star Steve Guttenberg stayed to help firefighters by moving cars in order to make room for incoming fire trucks. He had a message for residents leaving the area, telling local TV: "What’s happening is people take their keys with them as if they’re in a parking lot. This is not a parking lot. We really need people to move their cars.”
Others that reportedly have homes in the area include Tom Hanks, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, basketball star Kawhi Leonard and James Wood.
On X, Wood described evacuating his home and said he wasn’t sure if it was still standing: “It feels like losing a loved one”.
On Instagram, Mark Hamill, of Star Wars fame, called the blaze the "Most horrific fire since '93" and says he evacuated Malibu "so last-minute there [were] small fires on both sides of the road".

I'm confused why people who have homes in those foothills which are very prone to fires don't have plans in place in case this shit happens...which it frequently does. Especially when you have kids and pets to deal with. And, even more so when it's RICH people who have more options than poor people.

R333 Every Californian I know has a go-bag always at the ready in their trunk, but there's only so much you can do. These foothills have tiny winding roads which are the the only way out and they get gridlocked FAST. Even the highways will because everyone is evacuating at the same time with only minutes of warning (at least in this case). What could they do apart from owning a private helicopter?

The Los Angeles Fire Department has confirmed its first casualties as the fast-moving Palisades Fire spreads to almost 3,000 acres at zero percent containment, leaving more than 30,000 residents evacuating their homes.
A 25-year-old female firefighter and “multiple burn victims” are among the injured, LAFD spokesperson Erik Scott said on Wednesday morning. No fatalities have been confirmed.

Wow this really hits home for me. I rather my sister-in-law and third of four nieces that still lives there. They live on Monument Street above Sunset, where they've lived since 1993. If you know the area it's right up from Pali Village and walking distance to Palisade high school.
I would say my very healthy and life-loving brother as well but he unfortunately died way before his time two years ago from brain cancer. If the house goes this would just be too much for my sister-in-law to take. they were happily married and he was a fantastic father to all four of his girls. I am in NYC, and woke up early this morning and texted my oldest niece for an update but have not heard back. We’ve lost power off and on throughout the evening due to being in a high risk area. Our security system tripped last night due to the winds. I just went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for our pets, and it’s a mixed bag. Parts of the skies have smoke, and then it seems to dissipate quickly, due to the forceful gusts of wind. Hopefully, the fire we have burning closer to our community doesn’t spread near here. LAFD has kept up on the mountains behind our city, but you just never fucking know out here in California. Things change quickly whenever these types of fires erupt and spread due to high winds.
Then I go on to apps to check on other communities, and the comments are filled with shit about Trump.
Regardless of my DEEP disdain for the GOP shaped under MAGA, I do have to give him and troll farms credit for taking the souls & minds of human beings and just breaking/snapping them like pencils. The world could be burning down or dying of pestilence via a pandemic, and people are still going hard for this fucking imbecile and the idiocy of dunces who have emerged from an era that will be defined in the future as a time when no one gave a fuck about each other due to something so fucking ridiculous as politics.
Wanna know why I’m not calling my mom to tell her we are OK? Many reasons, including politics. Wanna know why she doesn’t call me? POLITICS. Wanna know why people won’t reach out to others who may be in catastrophic loss areas? POLITICS.
God damn we are a senseless, silly, STUPID nation & I genuinely hope all of you displaced at this moment are safe and sound. I love you and want your and yours safety above all else, and so do other complete strangers out there who do not give a fuck who you voted for at a time like this.

The clouds approaching are black, with HUGE billowing shapes of smoke and you can finally smell it, too.
I don’t believe it will reach here, but we’re in for debris, ash and power outages for the rest of the day.
People in Pasadena or near the 118, the 210, 134, or the 2 freeways: do NOT drive to work through this type of black smoke if you don’t have to, folks. You don’t know where it will get really thick, and you won’t be able to see fallen power lines or debris. Call the Fire Department in order to assist you in getting out or get out NOW. Same if you are in a high wind area without fire, because a tree or debris can literally fall on the roof of your car, break your windshield, etc.

Years ago, another California fire, I remember seeing a clip of a roadway stalled with evacuating cars and a woman on horseback neatly picking her way through the roadside trees leading another horse by its halter. Maybe I just read about it.

We lost power again. Sigh. We are pretty much surrounded, as I just learned from my roommate that his friend in North Hollywood just notified him of a developing and serious fire right above North Hollywood. We have pets and a real “elder-elder” here.
Our yard and multiple patios and garden areas are TRASHED. Shit flew everywhere last night. We won’t be able to see the roof until the winds stop.
LAFD Emergency choppers plus what look like military grade helicopters are all flying & headed to where the fires are right now above our home, and they will likely have to land somewhere asap as the winds are really picking up again.
Please stay safe, DL. ❤️

Didn't clear up, because more smoke was added from the Altadena fire. Got to work and then got sent home. Drive home was just as eerie.

Global warming has absolutely contributed. But no one ever talks about the proximate cause. Both democratic and republican politicians side step naming the real culprits. Gee, I wonder why? Could it be because they make massive political contributions to both parties?
If you look up all most most devastating recent fires in the LA area, they’re almost all caused by the same culprits.
The power utilities. Their equipment causes 90% of the fires. PG&E is the perfect example (in the north and central parts of CA).

Another firefighter warned, “We’re down to 25 percent. Hold off.”"

That’s a BS excuse, r536. They claim they want to clearcut wide swatches of trees around their lines to prevent these fires, but didn’t grass catch fire? Don’t weeds catch fire? Trees are not the only flammable vegetation.
The real problem is the equipment itself is old and prone to fire when damaged. The lines are uninsulated. The transformers are old. Yes, trees striking them is what causes the spark, but debris can still strike the equipment, or it can simply be knocked down by the winds.
They don’t want to replace the equipment with newer safer stuff. It’s cheaper to buy politicians.
