Metropolitan Opera Question

If it were your first time at the Met, would you be more impressed with front row Grand Tier? Or dead center, Row K, center orchestra?

Grand Tier is really something — and the chandeliers are right there. But it’s a bit far.

Taking my college roommate/very best friend to TOSCA. His first time at the Met. And I’m REALLY overthinking.

I love the Grand Tier, the sound is fantastic, but there’s nothing like Center Orchestra if you want to impress someone. And everyone wants to see the sets and all the stage business.

by Anonymousreply 1January 7, 2025 7:26 PM

Prefer Center myself. But is he there for the music of the opera or the spectacle of the opera house?

by Anonymousreply 2January 7, 2025 7:57 PM

Music, although the spectacle of the house will be appreciated.

Is Row G too close?

by Anonymousreply 3January 7, 2025 8:04 PM

We do you need to impress your best friend?

by Anonymousreply 4January 7, 2025 8:06 PM

The best seats as far as acoustics and visual are the box or first balcony seats in the center, but they are pricey. I would go with the orchestra level center, or right to the side.

Haha. R4. The cancer is terminal and he has maybe 6 months. Feel better? It feels like I’m losing my best friend. Because I am.

And that’s….the REST of the story.

If you can afford it, have dinner before at the Grand Tier restaurant. It's ridiculously expensive, but it really takes a night at the opera to another level. Order dessert for the first intermission. You'll have it at the table waiting for you.

Even if you don't eat there, order dessert for one of the intermissions. You'll both love it.

(Forgive me if I'm being presumptuous...you may have already known all this!!)

Row K orchestra. It's a great combination of both sight and sound. Higher up, the sound is better but the stage seems far away.

by Anonymousreply 8January 7, 2025 8:46 PM

Listen I’d be impressed if we skipped the Met and instead had dessert at Junior’s

by Anonymousreply 9January 7, 2025 8:48 PM

OP, you are a lovely person. I hope you guys have a great evening.

by Anonymousreply 10January 7, 2025 9:15 PM

I’ve always loved the Grand Tier. The little bit of height from the stage makes the best combo of sight and music.

by Anonymousreply 11January 7, 2025 9:32 PM

Closer is better - I go to the Met all the time. Take the orchestra seats. And yes, eat in the Grand Tier too. Yes $ but it's what money is for and the kind of evening life is all about, if you care about cultural experiences. Enjoy! And tell us how it goes.

The time we have is the time we have. I hope this turns out to be an unforgettable evening for you both.

The best seats are the stalls in the men's room with the glory holes. Some beautiful cocks that poke their heads through those.

by Anonymousreply 13January 8, 2025 12:02 AM

Well, I never!

by Anonymousreply 14January 8, 2025 12:05 AM

OP Get your tickets NOW, there's only 4 performances left.

No glory holes in the MET bathrooms—sorry to disappoint

by Anonymousreply 16January 8, 2025 2:09 AM

R16 You've checked on more than one occasion ?

by Anonymousreply 17January 8, 2025 2:11 AM

I recommend skipping the Foie Gras Terrine, OP.

Not easy on the digestive system.

I hope your best friend and you have a memorable evening.

by Anonymousreply 18January 8, 2025 2:52 AM

^If dining at Grand Tierre.

by Anonymousreply 19January 8, 2025 2:53 AM

R13, its’s not La Boheme. It’s Tosca.

by Anonymousreply 20January 8, 2025 12:25 PM

OP here. We’re dead center orchestra. Row K.

Grand Tier restaurant is booked. But I’ll keep watching for cancellations.

Thanks, folks.

by Anonymousreply 21January 8, 2025 1:35 PM

R21, great, I hope that you have wonderful time.

by Anonymousreply 22January 8, 2025 1:42 PM

Have a great time! I hope we get a report afterwards!

by Anonymousreply 23January 8, 2025 2:16 PM

Sorry the Grand Tier is booked, OP, but you can still order dessert for intermission. Email James at thegrandtier@patinagroup.com and ask for the order form. You won't regret it!

by Anonymousreply 24January 8, 2025 8:07 PM

Get a box so you can recreate the opera scene from Pretty Woman.

by Anonymousreply 25January 9, 2025 12:22 AM

R25, that was LA.

Cher and Nicholas Cage went to the Met opera in Moonstruck.
