If you weighed it against the stunt-casting they have done for Roxie, you'd give Toni Collette a Tony for this performance.

An audition? Since when would she have to audition for anything? Is this a very, very old clip?

The sound quality of the clip doesn't do her any favors. I'm sure she sounded better in person. Overall she wasn't cute enough to play Roxie. Her Roxie would've looked too tough, too knowing, like Queenie in 'Wild Party.'

Looking tough for Chicago makes sense, R15. And she certainly is attractive enough.

I saw her in the Wild Party and she was a force of nature, one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. And she was incredibly sexy. She should've not only played Roxie, she should have played Judy Garland. Renee Zelwegger is talentless.

Charlize Theron was up for this too. With her being such a great dancer I can only assume she lost out because she doesn’t sing well and she wasn’t polishing Harvey’s knob.

She could've been, and I guess still could be, a great Roxie on stage, but I never would've bought Toni Collette playing a film character that's some dippy little tart who lays around all day eatin' bon bons and jazzin'. It'd be like if they cast Uma Thurman or Julia Roberts or Charlize Theron for the part. I'm not a big fan of Renee Zellweger's performance in the film, but she had the right look (cute but mundane) and the right screen presence (mousy but calculating) to play Roxie for the film's story, which I recall wasn't as dark as the stage version's book.

Toni has a perfectly pleasant voice. Excuse me, didn't Melanie Griffith play the part at some point. Give me a fucking break.

I love Cate Blanchett, but she’s always doing some esoteric project that wants to be very highbrow. Toni is a working actor —The real deal.

I don’t know. I thought Toni sounded fine. The sound quality didn’t sound great, but that’s to be expected from a pre-digital audition tape from the late 1990s or early 2000s (whenever this thing was filmed). The sound quality is more to blame, not Toni’s performance.

If I remember correctly, I think Toni almost nabbed the role of Roxie, but then Harvey (f**k the man and not in a good way) pressured the studio to hire Renee instead. If that’s the case, poor Toni!

I liked Toni in “Hereditary” though. I enjoyed her in “Knives Out” as well. She hasn’t done too badly.
