"Forever Young" by Alphaville - was it popular?

Alphaville's "Forever Young" has had an interesting life. I was introduced to it in the late 2000s or so when Jay-Z sampled it in a song called "Young Forever." Recently David Guetta has remixed the song which is getting some radio airplay.

I see that it only peaked at 65 on the Hot 100. As someone who wasn't around, I'm curious if the song got much exposure in America in its original form. Was it on the radio? Was it an "MTV hit"?

I think you got right OP. It was a MTV hit. Jay made it a top ten Billboard hit about a decade ago.

Should have been a single:

It was very popular in Europe when it was originally released in 1984 (or, was it 1985?) Like, say, "Everywhere" by Fleetwood Mac, it's one of those songs that became even more popular decades after their original release.

R3 I bet most people would be shocked to learn Piano Man by Billy Joel only peaked at 25 on the Hot 100. It is one of the most popular songs of all time. Truly great music grows over time.

Forever Young by Bob Dylan?

In America, it flopped in '84-85, got a shifty Laura Branigan cover in 1985, re-released with an Alphaville hits package in late '88-early '89, charted, and then bupkes for twenty years.

Also, Big In Japan really did ape The Safety Dance's rhythm track, as they have now admitted, and still not enough love for Sounds Like A. Melody.

Glorious German synthpop.

Sounds Like A Melody might be my favorite single off their debut album. I will say, though, that Big In Japan was *everything* to me as a young teen back in 1984.

Love this vid. Especially when we get ready to gangbang Colto at the end.
