She used to have lots of hits in the 80s & 90s. What happened?
Why did Janet Jackson’s career go straight down the shitter?

Janet’s doing very well, especially considering that she hasn’t released new music since 2015. She’s doing the same thing Madonna and Cher are doing, touring off their back catalogue. Janet needs to get rid of that dirtbag brother of hers.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 7, 2025 9:54 AM |
Most of it was inevitable. Has there ever been a major female pop star who had a youthful fan base and retained that huge fan base as she reached and then passed age 40? The fact that Madonna did - and only for a short while (the Music album) - only points to how unusual it is.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 7, 2025 10:16 AM |
I hate to say it and its completely unjust, but the Superbowl nipplegate ruined superstardom for her with the mainstream.
I also agree that she can't shake Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
And I say this as someone who enjoys and loves her, despite all the Jackson family crazy.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 7, 2025 10:21 AM |
r15 is right. Madonna, Cher and Tina Turner are the only ones I can think of who still had major pop careers after forty. And Tina Turner had a LONG dry spell that lasted for years before that. Grace Slick also had two or three hits with Starship when she was in her forties. It's very unusual for a female artist to still have a big career in pop music after a certain age.

Janet Jackson would not be the star she is without Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who crafted her iconic Minneapolis sound style. Her music career before that was nothing, including a turn on Fame, the TV show. Once she got out of the "Jackson" machine she flourished. Control was such a departure from her and any form of pop music at the time. Rhythm Nation was also another great collaboration with Jam and Lewis. I think when she started to think she was more of the artist and tried other producers is when she lost her way. Jackson is credited as song writer on all of her songs, but how much of that she writes is anyone's guess. Her album Janet. was probably her best collab with Jam and Lews, losing the industrial funk sound of Minneapolis and getting a bit more groovy and sexy. She is one of the few artists to produce 6 top ten #1 hits from a single album.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 7, 2025 7:50 PM |
Last I listened to her/bought her CD was some real shitty offering (I believe with Jermaine Dupri) that only had one Jam/Lewis song on it called "Enjoy" and that was the only decent track on the album. I don't know if she ever released it or not but it should have been the first release cause it definitely would have went to #1.
That proved to me they were the magic behind her facade.

No. As accomplished and proficient as Jam & Lewis are as musicians, writers and producers their best work is with her. Janet has the magic, she just needed the right collaborators to showcase it. Their other work is great what they did with Janet is the most distinctive and electrifying.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 8, 2025 3:00 AM |
r32 agree to disagree. Didn't mean to turn you on was better than most anything that came from Janet but because it was Cherelle it was deemed "black" music and didn't cross over until Robert Palmer did it. They could work magic with other artists. Give it to You, Jordan Knight's solo hit, Human, with the Human League, Fake Alexander O'Neil, If it Isn't Love, New Edition, Monkey George Michael, On Bended Knee Boyz II Men, Romantic Karyn White, Scream Michael and Janet, The Floor Johnny Gill - just to name a few.

But I'd still listen to a Madonna album over a Janet album. Even "Madame X".

I agree with R43, and we have yet to see how Lemonade goes on to influence other artists in the decades to come. I am a 60/40 split fan of Madonna and Janet, Rhythm Nation is an amazing album. The album Janet was the only real departure album, her others sound has a continuity that makes it's longevity unique. Doesn't change the fact that she's made some amazing music.

"Rhythm Nation" was the "Lemonade" of its time. No mainstream pop artist had ever tackled social injustice by name in such a forthright manner on a commercial recording - the title track, "The Knowledge", " State of the World", etc. And before everyone starts trying to redefine "mainstream pop artist" it refers to someone who had multi-platinum record sales and No.1 hits on the pop charts. So that would not include Nina Simone or Gil Scott-Heron.

🤦♂️ Of all the stupid things I’ve ever read on DL (and there have been MANY), that one really takes it. Please tell me you’re just a highly uninformed Gen-Zer or something, because you cannot be this dumb and have been around in the late ‘80s. Sweetie, Rhythm Nation 1814 GAVE BIRTH to Lemonade. Without Janet’s still-influential, still-relevant seminal 1989 masterpiece, there would not have been a Lemonade. From the highly conceptual black and white imagery and videos to the concept mini-movie that coincided with the release of the album, it was a juggernaut that exploded onto the charts and became the biggest album of 1990 with seven top 5 Hot 100 singles (the only album to ever achieve this feat), at a time when Beyonce was still playing with dolls and singing into a hairbrush in front of a mirror. Add to that, Janet’s 1997 dark magnum opus The Velvet Rope is the mother to Bey’s sister Solange’s A Seat at the Table album, which even critics have stated.

R56 The Queen has always given Janet her props as she has done for every black legend at some point. This came on a few weeks after the Nipplegate Super Bowl. I knew it was wrap for Janet 😂. And I’m only bashing her because she is a stupid ass MAGA bitch and coy one. At least be real. She knew exactly what she was implying when did that interview questioning Kamala’s ethnicity. She is just not a fake cunt so she is not going to be fake and sound like a college graduate because she is not one. She is actually quite smart. Just because she has a deep southern drawl which has somewhat diminished over the years.

Beyonce does not have an articulate way of speaking. Sorry, but she just doesn't. She speaks like any country, podunk black girl who has to be careful not to put "ain'ts" where "isn'ts" are supposed to be. Now, someone like Aaliyah, OTOH, had a beautiful flowy way of speaking and enunciating without sounding like a 'round the way girl. Even Rihanna has a better speaking voice.

Well, genius, she did just come off of the successful second-leg of her TA World Tour when she went into rehearsals for this new show, so it's doubtful she'd want to spend another 6 months doing a grueling residency. Besides, she already did the multiple-month residency thing in 2019 with her METAMORPHOSIS show.

Rhythm Nation 1814 was the first album to have number-one hits in three different calendar years as well as the only album (at the time) to have seven hot 100 hits from one album. Janet. , her next studio album was the first to land on number one for a female artist since Nielsen Soundscan was used to validate sales. That's the way love goes remained number one for eight consecutive weeks. I would argue either Rhythm Nation or Janet. were her Lemonade.
