The Murder of 2 year old James Bulger by two 10 year olds
I came about this horrific story from of all things looking at the plot for Wicked.
Holy shit. Two 10 year old boys brutally murdered that poor child. UKers, dish. What don’t we know about this story that isn’t already out there? The one kid, Jon Venables, who was thought to be the least likely to offend ended up being a complete menace to society. The other, who is likely a psychopath, we haven’t heard much about. But Venables, damn, he just keeps reoffending and reoffending. Both given new identities, but many have showed pics of them. I cant find any.

There was a short film on this called Detainment. It was basically the transcripts from their interrogations. Venables showed remorse, but Thompson did not. Venables also fucked some female guard while he was underage in prison, then he became a stone cold pedo.
It makes you wonder what the fuck happened to them when they were younger.

R5 - My aunt worked in the place the boys were held and, while she wouldn’t give details, told me their home lives were a horror show.

R6 They weren’t held at the same place, though.
Thompson is a psychopath, but he’s apparently stayed out of trouble. Venables became a pedo. Both sexually assaulted the 2 year old.
The murder was brutal. It is hard to believe 10 year olds did this, and it is hard to believe they were always skipping school, robbing places, running around in the open and no one did jack shit about it.

Venables has been caught repeatedly with violent child porn. He’s gone to jail, only to get back out time after time. I think he is finally behind bars again and has staying there until this day, but no one knows for sure.

They're both genuine sociopaths. Someone I know interviewed both of them as part of research into child sociopathy. There was vague suggestion of sexual assault but not enough to suggest there was a sexual motivation to the crime, more that they just wanted to hurt someone. I might be misremembering this but they initially planned to push a child into traffic but got spooked and instead led the victim on a long walk to a railway line.
I was quite young at the time, but there were horrible details/rumours not related to the public about the depravity of this case. Also, the one who's not been sent back to prison has transitioned.

Mary Bell, who was 10 when she murdered a 4-year-old, had been sold out to her prostitute mother’s clients for years.
You would think extreme abuse like this predates children turning to such violent acts.

There's a woman on NC's death row (Blanche Taylor Moore), a serial killer who poisoned multiple people, who was apparently sold out as a prostitute by her father when she was a young teen to help pay off his gambling debts. (He was a Baptist minister.)
Sociopathy can run in the family - it's not really something you choose.

A taste of R12 / R28’s posting history in case anyone for a second suspected him of truthfulness or a lack of agenda:
“I've never met a trans person who didn't have severe mental health problems bigger than their so-called gender dysmorphia.”
“There is no rationality to gender ideology. It's a belief system that exists outside of rational Western philosophy based on reason. It's a mental disorder.”
“At my nephew's christening, two people turned up in mens suits. My BIL cos he'd been told to by my sister. And a "transman" friend of my sister. She just looked like a fat lesbian wearing man clothes. It's all about performance.”
“A woman who's had her tits cut off isn't a man.”
“Ask yourself why trans women want to get into women's toilets and trans men don't want to get into men's toilets. There's a reason we have spaces segregated by sex.”
“Trans are by definition mentally ill, so their histrionic accusal of everyone denying their existence isn't much of a surprise. They live in a constant state of hysteria.”
“The majority of male "trans" are straight men. In the real world they want nothing to do with gay men.”

I just watched a YT video on this.
Venables was a very disturbed child before he did this. Teachers said they’d never had a child that disturbed. Thompson was described as not caring, mischievous, and by some, normal.
Child crime was rampant in that part of Liverpool. Both kids would leave school in the middle of the day, run the streets in view of everyone, and not one fucking thing was done. No police to take them back to school, or find out what all these very young kids were doing running the streets all hours of the day even up to midnight. Both missed weeks of school at a time. What the fuck was wrong with that area? That city was filled with hoodlums and the locals were all like “kids will be kids.”

Whenever I see a James Bulger thread here (we've had quite a few over the years), I'm almost afraid to open it expecting one to have committed some heinous crime. It's so heartbreaking. Poor little James went along so trustingly.
Back when IMDb had forums (fora?), I was a member of the Sports board to discuss English and Spanish soccer. I was surprised to learn Liverpool has a terrible reputation for everything in the UK, but especially crime and gangsters. One poster went as far as describing it as a genetic cesspool. As far as I could tell, it wasn't an assessment made on the basis of football rivalries. It was pretty much a universal opinion. I'm trying to think of a comparable city. Detroit of the 80s? Industrial, gloomy, crime ridden.

For violent murders and crimes, I don’t care about reforming them. Reform them with far more time in jail. And Jon Venables should never get out of prison after repeatedly breaking the law.
The death penalty is useless and just makes us feel good. There are too many cases where the wrong person is put in prison, so no one the death penalty, It’s not tough; it’s stupid.

Well, apparently, his mother let go of his hand to pay for some items while she was shopping. How long did it take her to pay before she realized her child was missing? Did she file a report? Apparently, the three boys were noticed by several eyewitnesses who noticed little James crying but did nothing to intervene. They were all children! 38 witnesses saw them, saw the boy hurt and crying, knew the boys should be in school, yet nothing was done. Watching the documentaries it's fascinating how so many of these very young kids ( 6, 7, 8, 9) would skip school for days, roam around town all day and late at night, and it was seen as normal. One cop described them as feral children, but WTF was the police and social services doing? Thompson's mom said she allowed him to stay out until midnight, miss weeks of school because she didn't want social services involved. Well, congratulations cunt! Your child murdered a baby!
There are many areas of the UK like Liverpool. It makes you less racist because these are thug White kids and horrible parents. A lot of them. They act every bit the same as inner city Blacks. It's always about economics and what your normal is. This was normal in Liverpool.

[quote] I have no reason to make shit up about a horrible sociopathic child killer
This is a direct lie because, per your own transphobic posting history, you clearly do have a reason to make up nasty things about trans people. It is in your interest. It is not a coincidence that a person like you posted that. As soon as I saw it posted my intuition told me that if I checked your posting history it would be full of anti trans comments and that turned out to be correct. I think you read something to the effect on one of your weird anti trans reddit threads (which was itself a lie, posted by some other weirdo), and reposted it, updating the information to be "my friend interviewed them" to give it that personal touch. I thought that David James Smith's 'The Sleep of Reason' book was quite good - even-keel, describes how the two boys were truanting and stealing.. A sense of that no-one cared even if they noticed. I'm British, the same age as Thompson and Venables. My friend and I tried truanting once and it was noticed almost immediately. It's clear that Thompson and Venables didn't have parents who would parent them properly nor were there authorities who would step in to do that. It feels like that they were aimless, bored, sociopathic, and somehow it escalated to killing James.
I've never heard that Thompson has transitioned so I would treat that claim with a big pinch of salt.
As for Venables, it may be deceptive that just because Thompson put on a hard veneer he was seen as the main instigator when it could well have been Venables. Possibly Venables was sexually attracted to James and Venables is the one who is better at being manipulative. In that famous photo, it is Venables who is holding James's hand as he's led away - although I know that doesn't prove anything.

"The High Court heard that Venables had been arrested on suspicion of affray in September 2008, following a drunken street fight with another man. Late that year, he was cautioned for possession of cocaine.
"On 7 February 2018, Venables pleaded guilty to possession of indecent images of children for a second time. There are a lot of reasons low income people turn violent. One of them was/is lead. Lead paint was used in many low income housing, among other things. Children ate the paint chips, and we all know the lead in water pipes. Very bad. It can lead to low IQ, learning disabilities, and violent tendencies. I looked into this case a long time ago and I don't intend to again-once was enough. At the time, I think Thompson was considered the instigator because he was bigger, older and his home life was more *obviously* troubled. But it's pretty clear that Venables was far sicker and likely succeeded in manipulating the police and social workers into thinking he was the more vulnerable boy. Thompson, I believe, was more a product of his circumstances. He has not reoffended. Not an excuse (his crime was heinous) but still. But w/ Venables, these tendencies seem to be.... innate. His desire to brutalize children appears fixed, no matter how much they try to rehabiliate him w/ prison programs, therapists etc.
That's the 'on paper' assessment. But.....there's something else. When researching this case, I looked at their photos and it struck me that while Thompson appeared relatively 'normal'....there was something about Venables that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up- a visceral response.
I feel bad saying this about a child- but he looks demonic to me. It's all in the eyes.

Some say Venables was so traumatized by the killing it made him into a true monster, whereas Thompson was diagnosed a psychopath while in custody. Venables was not diagnosed one, but, and this is from his psychologists, he had severe PTSD from the experience and maybe he is being self-destructive on purpose? No matter what, Venables is completely broken and cannot be allowed in society.

Who are those "some who say?" R100, you sound like a Brit taken over by a MAGAt trying to imitate stupidity and coming out even worse....
Are you a claiming psychiatrist or worse?
And why are you claiming something as untrue as a 10 year old being diagnosed
You are not a credible poster, r100.

R102 It’s all in the documentaries and cited on Wikipedia with the sources. It’s COMMON KNOWLEDGE you dumbfuck.

R103 that's not credible though. From the wiki page:
"The (Observer) paper also stated that the Bulger family's lawyers had consulted psychiatric experts in order to present the parole panel with a report that suggested Thompson is an undiagnosed psychopath, citing his lack of remorse during his trial and arrest. That report was ultimately dismissed".
A report from the Bulger family who are not unbiased and who didn't get to interact with Thompson directly either?

I’m glad I found this. I had seen a documentary where there was evidence authorities withheld a lot of gruesome details about what really happened to baby James. This confirms he was sexually abused before being murdered. His poor mom had to ask the right people a question she didn’t want to know, but knew how sexually deviant both boys were.

But you didn't ask if it was credible R104, you asked where he heard it and implied he made it up, it was on the wiki page, whether it's credible is another story.

R106 I'm a different poster but it's still not an accepted diagnosis. Which is why the report was dismissed.

R107 That wasn't the issue. Everything that poster said was in the wiki page including Venables psychologists saying he suffered extreme PTSD from the killing. R102 said that poster was making it up, which clearly they weren't.

Generally speaking, a knee jerk over-reaction may lend credence to the findings.

It wasn't until parole time, conveniently, they admitted their roles, but still didn't get into why they did it or fess up to the sexual abuse.

I just can’t imagine keeping up with the abuse once the little boy started screaming and crying. I mean, I can see a pair of tweens having sick power fantasies about being evil or satanic. Kids often associate that with power.
But once you start DOING it, doesn’t the reality of it — the fear and pain in the little boy — assert itself?

Detainment was interesting.
So I guess the consensus now is that Venables was the mastermind? It's interesting that he was such a mess during the interview -- crying etc -- while Thompson was stone cold and defiant. Not that means much, but Venables seemed more opportunistic. He knew how to manipulate the adults around him.

R121, that was more or less the opinion of Gitta Sereny as well, if I remember correctly. She said that on a first assessment Thomson was the cold blooded leader, showed no emotion, etc, but she thought that actually Venables was the one trying to manipulate everyone, even at the time of the trial . She also inte

Did this case get a lot of media attention in Canada? I remember my mom talking about it when it happened, and I'm wondering how she would have been exposed to it. (We spent part of our summers in Ontario.)

Venables acted like a typical sociopath/psychopath who gets caught and loses it. Court reporters said he used to do staring contests at them and never looked away.

It received a lot of attention in Europe as well, at the time it was also used as a discussion over the effects of screen violence, pc games, movies, etc. That and, of course, whether some people /children are born truly evil.

R129, Yes, the judge inexplicably said this to the court after they were sentenced:
"How it came about that two mentally normal boys, aged ten, and of average intelligence, committed this crime is hard to comprehend. It is not for me to pass judgement on their upbringing, but I suspect that exposure to violent video films may in part be an explanation."
The judge had no evidence for that violent videos were a cause but was just going off the prejudices of the day. I suppose it's easier than focusing on hard-to-solve social issues.

What always gets me about the "violent video game" argument is that not too long ago, a subset of Americans happily attended lynchings -- and brought their whole families. And, of course, there were public executions in larges stretches of European history.
You cannot tell me that witnessing the torture and murder of a real, living human being would have less of an effect on kids than video games, especially video games in the 1980s/early 1990s.

Venables went back to Liverpool several times after his first release, despite it being expressly forbidden. He also revealed his true identity to people. He hasn’t stopped torturing James’ parents and family.

R68, when my parents travelled around the US, my mother was recovering from cancer treatment. In hindsight, it wasn't a great time for them to go, but they have so many stories of complete strangers (Americans) approaching them, noticing my mother wasn't feeling the best, and showering them with kindness. The could not believe how hospitable and caring people were towards them.

Just seen this thread for the first time. I remember this at the time and remember that it was particularly brutal and sadistic. The terror and pain James Bulger died in. So WTF? How in the fuck were either of the murderers released from jail??? Unbelievable. Even though they were 10 when they committed the murder - they can't be let loose in our society. These are two very broken individuals who are always going to be a danger to society. They have to be locked up for life. It's fucking ridiculous to not have them incarcerated.

Thompson was said to be gay and living with his bf of about 10 years. The bf knows the history. Maybe he has transitioned. Both of them were bullies at school according to Smith's book. They routinely stole and committed petty crime so I don't believe that either of them had much of a moral compass. Robert is called Bobby in the book, by the way. He cried several times in interviews and was concerned for his mother. But yes, that's not the same thing as being sorry for having killed James, more sorry about being caught and in trouble.

Criminals are always/only "sorry" when they're caught by law enforcement. Never "sorry" enough to not commit crimes, never "sorry" enough to not re-offend.
