Gay Couple Moves to Mexico and Finds Themselves (and Lower Cost of Living)
I stumbled across this YouTube video of a gay couple waxing poetic about their “big, brave” move to Mexico. You know the drill: drone shots of cobblestone streets, margaritas at sunset, and the obligatory “We feel so free here!” voiceover.
I get it—Mexico can be gorgeous, the cost of living is better, and everyone suddenly becomes soooo in touch with themselves when they’re not choking on NYC rent. Have any of you also considered relocating south of the border? I'm trying to convince my husband for us to retire to Mexico City, but he's more of a beach person.
Video below. Have at 'em, bitches!

If I am not fluent in the native language, I'd be insane to move there at an old, vulnerable age.

These two are dripping with all the charm Sheldon and Amy had on Fun with Flags. The one sounds like he’s doing a Romy impression trying to be a serious businesswoman.
Anyone want to watch their special on Best Gay Nude Beaches? Anyone want to SEE them at a nude beach? Eek!

look at a move there as an experiment to see if it's a good fit for you rather than a permeant thing. Its a great country but many Mexicans them selves have a love hate relationship with the place. The cost of living is very low. I love Mexico myself and have been going back and forth for 35 years. The best and worst of humanity exists entangled.. Often the expats who are intelligent flexible and can think diversely, they are able to make it their home. Also learning Spanish is essential to being fully on board with your new life..

r5 I do as well - both couples I know love it there. I've visited a few times, and they seem genuinely happy.

I’ve tried eating at Mexican restaurants a few times and find that’s enough for me.

I love Mexico City! It is very much like NYC, but I doubt I would move there

Maybe another country but Mexico is too sketch. I vacation there quite a bit and know some expats. Great for some but not for me.

Merida would be my choice for a move to city life. Mexico City is just too big and smoggy.

If the average retirement check is $1700/month, how are you supposed to survive on this? The expenses they're rattling off exceed that amount. You're going to need a remote job that pays well to live there.

R13 ideally one would have other retirement savings as well

Couldn’t they have just moved to Missourisippi instead?

I would seriously consider Mexico - as a Texan, it’s our backyard (and vice versa) so culturally and logistically, it would be the easiest country to move to. And it’s beautiful. I actually looked up San Miguel de Allende real estate a few weeks ago and was stunned by the inexpensive and beautiful homes.

You'd be shocked at the percentage of native Mexicans who speak English quite well.

Good God, couldn't they have just made up a topic board and then just talked about each topic normally, rather than sounding like 2 robots with blown circuits.

I agree with r1, moving to a foreign country at an old and vulnerable age is risky. You become prey to scammers who ingratiate themselves or who you are beholden to for service or care.
Scammers target the elderly in Florida and those retirees are in their own country and speak the language. Imagine being at a disadvantage language and culture wise.

I know 2 people (a married couple) who moved to Nicaragua about 25 years ago. According to the wife's former relative (by marriage) they are quite happy still. They live right on a beach, on the Gulf side and last I heard had finally bought the house they were renting for pennies on the dollar.

I used to follow a YouTube gay couple living in Merida during the pandemic (until they broke up). It seems safe and reasonably developed, but the hideous heat would be impossible for me to deal with.
I spent a few months in Mexico City and that was plenty. Way too crowded and too noisy. I actually liked Puebla the best of all the cities I visited in Mexico, followed by Oaxaca (which was just a little too small for me).

90 Day Fiance, a reality show usually showing straight couples, featured a gay couple and created a short series about them: guy who lived in Florida fell in love with a much younger guy in Mexico. The American guy moved to Mexico to be with the younger guy

I would love to retire to a warm climate but every place in the American south is run by Republicans and there are few places particularly cheap any more.
I predict a mass exodus to international retirement destinations within the next 20 years

Many friends live in Mexico, but all live in a bubble... mostly only socialize with other gringos or locals who speak good English. Mexico City is fun to visit but pollution is terrible for much of the year. Merida is too hot and windy. PV has gotten wickedly expensive, as has San Miguel de Allende. Some friends have moved to Colombia since it's much cheaper than Mexico (but then there's the high crime issue...).
