Fareed pits NY against Florida -- and Florida wins!

I [bold]live[/bold] in Florida, and even I wouldn't say this shit!

Tell this MFer to come and live in my neighborhood in Deplorable Haven, and he'll be outta there in a (dare I say) NY minute.

I guess he fits right in at the new WaPo (where this opinion piece originated).

DL wouldn't let me post directly from the WaPo. I hope this link works OK. I had to use Google Translate; you may need it as well.

Isn't Florida pretty much filled with transplanted New Yorkers anyway?

by Anonymousreply 1January 5, 2025 5:21 PM

I hate the red states but he isn't saying anything that is crazy. He's right--the blue states do have a crisis of governance. The absolute biggest issue for blue states is housing. There are other issues but that is the biggest one. As for why blue states/cities get more attention for bad news versus red states, see below. Sure, red states have crazy high crime rates, but there is a belief in those states that the book will be thrown at criminals, whereas blue states/cities seem way more sympathetic to the criminals, mentally ill, etc.
America's big cities are incubators of growth, vitality and energy. That's why the spotlight is on them and their governance. And what we've seen recently is unbridled liberalism. For years, robberies ran rampant in California cities because of weak anti-theft laws. New York's homeless - some of whom are drug addicts or mentally ill - are left to frighten and harass the public on the streets and subways. The man charged this week with attempted murder after allegedly pushing a man in front of a subway train had previous arrests.

Fareed is a pretty useless guy. I mean he's on CNN!

by Anonymousreply 3January 5, 2025 5:33 PM

Why do you compare one city with an entire state?

by Anonymousreply 4January 5, 2025 5:54 PM

I knew so many people who moved to NYC from Florida in the 00s. I think the mass influx of trash hurt the culture a bit.

by Anonymousreply 5January 5, 2025 6:13 PM

R5 The trash is not the people moving out. The trash is the thugs commiting crime.

by Anonymousreply 6January 5, 2025 6:16 PM

R2, if you think affordable housing isn't an issue in red states, particularly in more urban areas, I have a bridge to sell you.

by Anonymousreply 7January 5, 2025 8:11 PM
I hate the red states but

You aren't fooling anybody, r2.

by Anonymousreply 8January 5, 2025 8:16 PM

^DL's dumbest poster with his "You aren't fooling anybody" shtick. Aren't you embarrassed after making a fool of yourself for months leading up to the election?

by Anonymousreply 9January 5, 2025 8:33 PM

LoL, r9, dig yourself even deeper.

by Anonymousreply 10January 5, 2025 10:12 PM

LOL, New York State has a lower crime rate than Florida. And Miami has a higher crime rate than NYC

Maybe Florida and all the other red states should do something about those loose gun laws!

by Anonymousreply 11January 5, 2025 10:16 PM

r9 is also:
If you are going to allow a Black Rose Hovick then there should be no problem with a white Josephine Baker. Audiences should be sophisticated enough to accept that.
It's the theatre, it's fantasy. It's all good.
Screw fidelity to history. Right?

At least I don't type old and racist, r9.

by Anonymousreply 12January 5, 2025 10:19 PM

And yet, Liza didn't sing "Miami, Miami."

by Anonymousreply 13January 5, 2025 10:23 PM

Jew York vershuz Schlorida

by Anonymousreply 14January 5, 2025 10:25 PM
LOL, New York State has a lower crime rate than Florida.

According to the FBI, Florida has a lower crime rate than NYState.

by Anonymousreply 15January 5, 2025 10:32 PM
They have comparable populations — New York with about 20 million people, Florida with 23 million. But New York state’s budget is more than double that of Florida ($239 billion vs. roughly $116 billion). New York City, which is a little more than three times the size of Miami-Dade County, has a budget of more than $100 billion, which is nearly 10 times that of Miami-Dade. New York City’s spending grew from 2012 to 2019 by 40 percent, four times the rate of inflation. Does any New Yorker feel that they got 40 percent better services during that time?

Wow.. Do the New Yorkers just not know they are being ripped-off, or do they have the belief that with all that spending they are somehow receiving 2 or 3 times the benefits of places that are run more efficiently?

by Anonymousreply 16January 5, 2025 10:39 PM
Isn't Florida pretty much filled with transplanted New Yorkers anyway?

The point being that they fled New York and its issues, having evaluated Florida to be the better option even though Florida has many issues of its own.

by Anonymousreply 17January 5, 2025 10:41 PM

R16, I'm from Illinois and even NY makes us look good. NYC is run better than Chicago despite the latter being far cleaner. Something like one out of every four dollars in Chicago's budget goes to fucking pensions. That's why nothing gets fixed here.

by Anonymousreply 18January 5, 2025 10:51 PM

Florida is run efficiently?

This is the first I'm hearing of that. I think many are still waiting for $110/wk unemployment checks from 2020! If Florida weren't consistently bailed out by blue states and FEMA it would revert to being a swamp in a matter of months.

by Anonymousreply 19January 5, 2025 10:59 PM
Florida is run efficiently?

You misread it. The statement was "more efficiently".
