I like Zoe too. Never thought of her as a great actress but I like her. It’s good to see a merely competent actor or actress really step up their game and execute. Thats what the craft is all about. And the hell she got for playing Nina Simone is downright criminal. No one did to Denzel when he played Malcolm X.

A musical about a Mexican drug cartel leader who transitions. Insulting to Mexicans, trans people and drug cartels.

More condemnation:

Definitely a film worth watching.... but it also seems, to me, a jumble of half-finished ideas and conceptual missteps.

It is way too long... and ends up in (suiting its musical aspirations) operatic melodrama. Its cinematography is claustrophobic and dark... editing more like a music video... none of which serve the story. It's an exercise in "ideas" of a European director... and those ideas resonated with a Cannes audience, but nothing about the movie captured anything Mexican... it was a cartoon of superficial ideas about mexicaniana and a transitioning "half man/half woman" villain/heroine in overblown redemption and sad ending.

I am glad they are making weird, genre and gender-bending movies. But jeez...

I saw it at a family member's home. I don't watch Netflix. Too many streamers to have. I will support the movie.
