The first major winter storm of 2025 is set to hit a large swath of the US in the next 24 hrs. The storm has been officially named Blair Warner after the 1980s sit-com The Facts of Life. Are you affected? I am. I’m scared!
The forecast is 12” of snow, 35mph winds with falling temperatures.

The UK and Ireland is within a couple of hours of getting a rather big winter storm, too.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 4, 2025 3:58 PM |
When did they start naming winter storms?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 4, 2025 4:17 PM |
My forecast is trace to an inch. Hold me!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 4, 2025 5:11 PM |
Winter storm Blair? Well, you take the good, you take the bad, you take the rest....
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 4, 2025 5:12 PM |
I’m picking up a load of firewood in a few minutes.
I should have enough for the next month.
There’s also some out back that I can split and use if I get desperate, but it’s not seasoned, so I’d like to hold off on that.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 4, 2025 5:17 PM |
To answer my question at r6. Some wishful thinking.
The Weather Channel announced the start of winter storm naming in October 2012. The first named winter storm was Athena, which brought snow to New Jersey and Connecticut in November 2012.
The Weather Channel argued that naming winter storms would improve communication about storm warnings and [bold]reduce the impact of storms.[/bold] They also said that it's easier to communicate about complex storms if they have a name.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 4, 2025 5:51 PM |
Our storm watch was just upgraded to a WARNING.
Well, I have milk, eggs, bread and firewood. All of my battery packs have been charged. I just need to get some candles and extra fire bricks at the ready.
Just in case.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 5, 2025 12:07 AM |
Where's the priest? This snow seems like it was sent straight from Hell.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 5, 2025 12:14 AM |
Please gawd don't let my Google fiber go out or my pipes freeze. Back in 2003 we had an ice storm that knocked out power for 9 days but it wasn't cold enough to freeze pipes. Here in KC it's cold enough to freeze pipes.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 5, 2025 12:19 AM |
(Stares out window) Oh my God, what the fuck is that? What the fuck is that?!?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 5, 2025 12:20 AM |
Please help me!
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 5, 2025 6:27 PM |
Well, the hard, icy snow from earlier has turned to softer flakes.
It’s snowing pretty steadily in SW Ohio. We have about 1/2” so far.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 5, 2025 7:35 PM |
I’m happy the guys who plow my driveway were nice enough to shovel my sidewalks too. I have psoriatic arthritis and was dreading going out again to shovel snow off of my sidewalks.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 5, 2025 9:35 PM |
Nothing here yet. The calm before the storm? Looks like it may become a rain/snow layer (ice), then snow, then winds and windchill and blowing snow. And how are you?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 5, 2025 9:40 PM |
R33 what do you mean "nice enough?" Did you pay them?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 5, 2025 9:56 PM |
Only for my driveway r34
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 5, 2025 11:37 PM |
R33, how's your pain level? All that precipitation must be murder on your joints.
And you should get those guys a gift.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 6, 2025 12:03 AM |
Were the guys hot?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 6, 2025 12:06 AM |
R29 I remember that one vividly. I was trying to drive back to KC for the weekend from college when all that went down.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 6, 2025 12:21 AM |
We have about 4-5” here so far and it’s still coming down pretty hard.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 6, 2025 2:21 AM |
I just shoveled over a foot of snow from my patio. Probably drifts because it doesn't look that deep out in the grass. It's super windy and the snow is dry so it's not sticking to trees and power lines. Hopefully we won't have any power outages here in KC. It's still snowing @ 8:33 pm.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 6, 2025 2:33 AM |
Just below freezing temps for the next few nights and highs in the 40s during the days here in Austin. No precipitation. Stay safe and warm, everyone!
If anyone has extra time and materials and want to help community cats stay warm, here are some ideas:
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 6, 2025 2:44 AM |
My first dumb question of the year. Will a leaf blower double as a snow blower if the snow is dry and not packed down?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 6, 2025 3:45 AM |
I believe so, r43, but your neighbors may take offense.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 6, 2025 4:07 AM |
R44 Thanks. I might give a try on the back deck in the morning if it's still powdery.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 6, 2025 4:12 AM |
More click bait for TWC and other websites. Every winter storm is life ending now, because we have to terrify you all.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 6, 2025 4:16 AM |
We’re in trouble
Make that a double.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 6, 2025 4:16 AM |
It’s named after Blair, Nebraska of course!

Turn blue.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 6, 2025 4:54 AM |
Bring it on! I'm a New Englander who used to backpack in the Whie Mountains during winter before I got old. I ain't scared. I laugh at danger now, I know I'm closer to death but what's worse than that? Nothing. I go to bed, tuck myself under comfortable covers and all is right with the world.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 6, 2025 5:50 AM |
Oh yeah? Try and get in my way Blair and I'll give you a knuckle-sandwich!
Now get outta my way, I've got a chick on my chopper waiting for me!
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 6, 2025 5:56 AM |
^ DYKE!!!
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 6, 2025 6:00 AM |
I'm in DC. They warned of snow and coworkers have flights into town prematurely cancelled from this evening and Monday morning. It's 1am and not a speck of snow. Sounds like another overblown media fluke for DC. Other areas got hit hard-ish, but it seems to have run out of steam. That's a shame, I was hoping for a snow day from work.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 6, 2025 6:01 AM |
It didn’t start here until about 4pm today, r54.
My friend in Dayton, OH said they didn’t get hit until around 6pm.
It’s 220am here and it’s still coming down. Sounds like ice or that hard snow from earlier. I can hear it hitting the windows.
Once it hits, it stays. Been snowing for almost 12 hours now. Looks like about 8” thus far on the garage roof.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 6, 2025 7:23 AM |
I'm going to cast a spell to send some of that snow to Collinsport, Maine.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 6, 2025 3:01 PM |
Blair is a bitch
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 6, 2025 3:30 PM |
Blizzard
by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 6, 2025 4:20 PM |
Yeah, 12 hours later and it’s still snowing. Been going for about 24 hours more or less. I think it stopped for a few hours last night around 330am when the eind picked up.
I went to let the dog out earlier and had to shovel a place off in the yard for her. The snow is up to my knees and still coming down.
It hasn’t snowed like this since probably the 90s
by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 6, 2025 7:26 PM |
Do drivers in Ohio use snow tires?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 6, 2025 7:31 PM |
I have “all season” tires on my truck, r60.
Where I grew up, we would use chains on our tires when the snow got this bad (I grew up on a farm).
Snow tires seemed to be more popular in the 70s and 80s. People don’t really like them because they make a lot of road noise in the summer and it hasn’t snowed this much in 30 years
Maybe up around Cleveland or Toledo where they get a lot of lake effect snow they use them more. But not down here in SW Ohio
