Washington Post Cartoonist Ann Telnaes Quits After Bezos-Owned Paper Kills Trump Satire Piece

Washington Post editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes quit after a satirical cartoon, which poked fun at the paper’s owner Jeff Bezos and other media and tech giants bending the knee to President-elect Donald Trump, was killed.

The Pulitzer Prize winner shared her decision in a Substack post Friday.

“I have had editorial feedback and productive conversations—and some differences—about cartoons I have submitted for publication, but in all that time I’ve never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at. Until now,” she said.

Telnaes had worked at the Washington Post since 2008. She described the political cartoon that did not get published, saying it “criticizes the billionaire tech and media chief executives who have been doing their best to curry favor with incoming President-elect Trump.”

The Washington Post did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

The cartoon included Facebook and Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Los Angeles Times publisher Patrick Soon-Shiong, the “Walt Disney Company/ABC News” depicted as Mickey Mouse and Washington Post owner Bezos. A rough draft of the scrapped cartoon can be seen below.

Telnaes criticized Bezos for his handling of the Washington Post in the months leading up to Trump’s election and those to follow. The paper did not endorse a presidential candidate in 2024 for the first time in decades, leading to three editorial board member resignations and widespread canceled subscriptions.

“Owners of such press organizations are responsible for safeguarding that free press— and trying to get in the good graces of an autocrat-in-waiting will only result in undermining that free press,” the cartoonist said of her former boss.

“As an editorial cartoonist, my job is to hold powerful people and institutions accountable. For the first time, my editor prevented me from doing that critical job. So I have decided to leave the Post,” she said. “I doubt my decision will cause much of a stir and that it will be dismissed because I’m just a cartoonist. But I will not stop holding truth to power through my cartooning, because as they say, ‘Democracy dies in darkness.’”

It looks funny.

But I don't get the Mickey Mouse character, and also the man putting on lipstick.

Another great asset of the WaPo gone.

Mickey Mouse = Disney

Man putting on lipstick = getting ready to kiss Trump's ass

This shit is dangerously said. No longer a fan of Bezos.

by Anonymousreply 4January 4, 2025 11:54 AM

She's very talented. And also very principled.

by Anonymousreply 5January 4, 2025 11:57 AM

Shades of Nazi Germany.

It starts just like this, folks.

In a year's time we'll be used to this kind of thing, because it will be happening so regularly.

But by then, they'll be banning bigger stuff. Like protests, and dissent,

And making you sign loyalty oaths.

by Anonymousreply 6January 4, 2025 12:08 PM

Reddit is shutting down and censoring Luigi Mangione discussions. In the near future, organized political dissent will become impossible. Word filters, automatic shadowbans, and other techniques will turn all the major communication platforms into ideologically controlled padded rooms. People CAN still discuss whatever they want face to face, or via private contact, but the reality is they won’t and people who are marginalized from the internet’s major platforms will be similarly ostracized in general because the convenience and addictive nature of social media based communication has fully captured people.

In a year's time, we won't know about these things, because the stories won't be published.

There, R6 -- FIFY.

WashPo is dead to me

by Anonymousreply 9January 4, 2025 12:25 PM

Tell your friends too, R9.

Not that Bozos cares.

He has more money than god.

Losing subscribers is meaningless to him.

He just wants the paper as a mouthpiece.

by Anonymousreply 10January 4, 2025 12:28 PM

Washpo, Amazon and Whole Foods.

Apple too.

by Anonymousreply 11January 4, 2025 2:15 PM

and just think, the orange piece of shit hasn't even begun his round 2 of shit show

by Anonymousreply 12January 4, 2025 2:21 PM

Amazing thing is that this is a really mild cartoon too. It's not like it is violent or encourages violence against Bozos or anyone else. It's a mild cartoon that is 100% accurate in what it depicts. Everyone is giving money to the inauguration fund because they want favorable treatment for their companies by the incoming administration. Bozos would have to admit that if forced as there isn't even a cover story for this sort of action.

by Anonymousreply 13January 4, 2025 2:50 PM

Oops, I meant to type Bezos, not Bozos. But "Bozo" is certainly fitting.

by Anonymousreply 14January 4, 2025 2:52 PM

It’s not about Trump. She made Bezos look bad. He owns the paper. I’m surprised she’s surprised.

by Anonymousreply 15January 4, 2025 3:04 PM

You're very stupid

by Anonymousreply 16January 4, 2025 3:04 PM

No you are. They publish anti Trump cartoons everyday. But never one about Bezis kissing his ass.

by Anonymousreply 17January 4, 2025 3:06 PM

..Bezos..

by Anonymousreply 18January 4, 2025 3:08 PM

This isn’t about Trump. It’s about Bezos’s thin skin.

by Anonymousreply 19January 4, 2025 3:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 22January 4, 2025 7:54 PM

She should get a real job. How embarrassing to have your occupation listed as cartoonist. What is she, 12?

by Anonymousreply 23January 4, 2025 8:03 PM

^ We found the bootlicker.

r23 is also:

*Red states crimes*

[quote]No, you’re not more likely to die in a red state. Democrat-run cities have murder rates on par with third world dictatorships. The red states you mention are listed as dangerous because of the cities within it which are blue. Gaslighting will no longer be tolerated. The public has spoken. It’s over.

r23 = retaded

by Anonymousreply 25January 4, 2025 8:12 PM

She drew a rough draft before Christmas and submitted it to her editor. He had problems with it and she graciously agreed to work on something else until he got back from vacation and they could discuss it. When he killed it she quit and put it on her Substack for free. That's bravery and principle.

Ann Telnaes is not only one of the nation's best political cartoonists, but she's got a distinct and sophisticated visual style like no one else.

by Anonymousreply 26January 4, 2025 8:40 PM

I feel like that lady who calls out bingo at the church.

by Anonymousreply 27January 4, 2025 8:59 PM

Mickey Mouse represents Disney, which owns ABC, which recently had George Whatshisname apologize to the Orange Beast.

Democracy dying

by Anonymousreply 29January 5, 2025 4:19 AM

I don’t think they fear Trump. I think they fear the other guy.

by Anonymousreply 30January 5, 2025 4:34 AM

[quote]She made Bezos look bad. He owns the paper. I’m surprised she’s surprised.

The tech columnist at the Post used to come down hard on Amazon products all the time - he was very harsh on Alexa speakers and their lack of privacy protection, for instance. Bezos never objected to that.

I doubt Bezos cares about cartoons like this. It's her editors at the Post who are being cowardly.

by Anonymousreply 31January 5, 2025 4:43 AM

Off-topic: All this bootlicking by the elite is surprising. I wonder how much of it is coerced. It is so easy to threaten these types. Trump can easily throw someone in prison and nationalize their company. Or, he can make everything so easy.

In May, Trump promised oil industry executives that he would eliminate climate regulations in exchange for a $1 billion donation. See the Guardian article. I wonder what deals are made now.

Doonesbury, Peanuts, and The Simpsons, those enduring cultural embarrassments. So unlike the unarguable prestige of a criminal game-show host.

by Anonymousreply 34January 5, 2025 3:16 PM

I cancelled both my WaPo and NYT subscriptions after the election.

After, I allowed myself to be seduced by the NY Times AI bot. It bombarded, sweet-talked and pestered my email. It asked for just a few of my meager pennies.

In exchange, it gave me full access to each of their feature topics, including The Athletic which is a very good sports page, Cooking, the whole 9 yards.

It was a total mutually consensual bit of whoring. And yet, I have my standards. So far as I know, Arthur Gregg Sulzberger hasn't requested an audience with Trump.

It's a frightening thing to ponder - if billionaire publishers don't think the 1st amendment protects them, if they feel they have to bow down to a US President, no matter who it is, then what protection is there for anybody?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The "American Experiment" has issued a finding- the "USA, USA!" is fucked.
