God, how truly horrible for that little girl. For her family, too. I do love animals, but I'd never have 3 dogs of 80- 100 lbs especially of some questionable breed around my grandkids. Especially unsupervised. Horrible.

Once again, there is a humane solution to this problem that makes headlines like these entirely a thing of the past in 10 or so years, but we can't do that because children being mauled by pits is MAH FREEDOM!

A Cane Corso has the bite force of a lion — much higher than a pit bull. That the father left his kid on the couch at night with three XL dogs while he slept safely in his own bed says a lot about him as a “parent.”

Given the optics considering he is a part-time father, he could have given the kid his bed and slept on the floor some place or out on the sofa, or made up an airbed/campbed/pile of cushions for her in his room. It’s quick and easy and kind of fun for a 3 year old. We did that heaps of time when travelling with our parents.

And it’s all too simple to do - as caging the dogs overnight - which makes him suspicious.

So the little girl just found out this guy was her father and the mom drops her off at his apartment for a few days over Christmas? And didn't know that he has large dogs? The daughter should have had time to meet the guy slowly over time, and definitely not be made to stay with him for a few days all at once, and over Christmas, since he's a stranger to her. And how did the mom just drop her off without checking out "Dad's" living environment first? Seems very negligent and un-protective of a 3-year-old. That poor, poor kid. Just horrific.

I should add...of course the dad is responsible for the dog attack. I was questioning the judgement of the victim's mother who allowed her to stay with a man the little girl just found out was her father and who had dogs the mother didn't know about.

I see these Tik Tok videos of toddlers playing with big dogs and I’m thinking this can’t end well.

I was asked two weeks ago by family to adopt another cat so an older pit bull dog could come home. My niece had a baby and rehomed the dog to the dog trainer. I'm sure this has been costing her plenty in the meantime for boarding etc. So the thinking went, Grandma who lives downstairs would have the dog live with her (her cat would move to me) and baby would see dog when grandma babysat which she often does. Well, I don't want another cat since it would put me at five (too many) and frankly. I don't want to help place a pit bull near a baby who's starting to walk. The pit is nearly ten, has been through several weeks long live-in training with a trainer and is deemed safe. Years ago this dog killed his own pup out of jealousy (?). He's been retrained but I still don't like him living in close proximity to the baby. I hope that they don't make this happen.

The mother was quoted as saying the dogs were over 100 pounds, which has led to speculation they are mixed with mastiffs (unless the idiot mom is adding up the weight of all three dogs together). Regardless, the size and bite force of a mastiff combined with the tenacity of a pit bull is the canine equivalent of a military assault rifle.

The dogs also probably weren't neutered which greatly increases the likelihood of an attack regardless of breed. Guardian breeds (of animals, no children jokes intended) are absolutely brutally protective and even I would never have an unaltered one.
