These parents knew their kid had behavioral issues. They knew what his triggers were. Costco is a very over-simulating environment in terms of auditory and visual aspects. So the question is why did they did closely not monitor the child why did they bring him there in the first place? Kids with his level of behavioral issues never grow out of them and parents should act accordingly. This is the roulette wheel of having kids sometimes they're geniuses sometimes they're destructive morons. You have to manage them accordingly. This kid probably did 10 to 15 k damage to that store the parents should be held financially accountable and have their Costco membership canceled for life. Shame on the parents. It's a sucky situation for the kid the future for him is looking dim.

R17 "you need to socialize kids with special needs" Ok then, will you chaperone this kid's outing to Dave and Busters to press the envelop on "socialization"? There's a segment of " special needs" kids that will be unable to socialize within typical society EVER. Should they be institutionized ? No only as a last resort. Professionals in the field agree that outings/socialization needs to be preplanned and in non stimulating enviroments with an appropiate ratio of adult to child supervision. Again these parents were fully aware of the kids issues, the father did not restrain this kid and take him out of the store for fear of not "causing a scene" look what happened. What if one of those TVs fell on somebody ? This kid looked somewhere between 9 to 11 years old. What are the parents going to do when he hits puberty and becomes too big and too strong to be handled by the parents? How will this child contribute to society as an adult ? Its bad enough to shop with normal kids running around unsupervised let alone "behavior challenged " kids creating danger.

R78. I agree with you and I was a child of the 90s. Back then the only kids you saw doing this were actually retarded. And I know that may not be the PC term nowadays but it was mentally retarded kids who barely understood language and would never be fully functioning adults. Autistics kids can read and write. and speak like normal kids even if they don’t quite grasp social cues. You didn’t see autistic kids behave like this back then.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | January 3, 2025 7:14 PM |
I don't believe autism is caused by vaccines.
But we have so many chemicals in our food and water supply, and have for decades if not over a century, now, so I have no doubt that's played a role in various developmental issues. It's hard to isolate just one - hard metals, acid mine drainage, microplastics.....
I'm happy and proud to be gay and believe we all deserve love and respect no matter what, but I also believe the huge jump in birth control in the 60s and beyond, and its presence in the water supply after that, has had an impact on the generations that have followed - in various ways.

The parents may have made a bad call, but the expectations placed on parents with severely disabled children seem unrealistic to me. And this kid is clearly severely disabled.
The narrator has the right idea. He recognizes the absurdity of it and doesn’t seem to be blaming the kid or the parents. It’s unfortunate that the King King thing evokes racist tropes, but I don’t think that’s what happening here. I could be wrong.

R49 the parents might have to pay for the damage, but this is why Costco has insurance. Particularly as father was in something of a panic trying to talk the kid down, it wasn’t a case of Bayleigh and Breighden running wild and the parents doing nothing.
More likely Costco might make the screens less accessible.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | January 5, 2025 5:19 AM |
R105, How easy is it to accomplish that? I’m asking because I have no idea, not being snide. Do you have to give up all parental rights? Do institutions for children even exist anymore? I know some children end up in nursing home-type facilities, but I think those are children who are minimally conscious and can’t walk or talk.
My gut is that we’ve gone too far in discouraging institutionalizing children and have placed the burden on parents and public schools instead. I had a cousin who was much older than me I never met who was institutionalized. It wasn’t advertised, but it wasn’t hidden, either. I heard his name mentioned occasionally when I was growing up (he was already dead). My aunt had 5 other kids to take care of. She couldn’t be a 24/7professional level aide to just one, although I think she tried for several years as the extent of his disabilities came to light. Nobody can do that.
All that said, this kid might have just had a bad day and happened to have watched King King the day before. I’m not suggesting he should be institutionalized.

R115 I don't know how difficult it is to accomplish, but a very close friend of our family had her daughter institutionalized from the age of 16 in North Carolina. The child was severely mentally retarded (wasn't a pejorative term in those days). She was non-verbal except for a few words. Her parents simply couldn't handle her at home anymore. She lived the remainder of her life at Broughton Hospital in Morgington, NC (psychiatric facility) and died at nearly 80 just a few years ago. She surprisingly lived many years after her parent's death. My mom and her extended family members visited periodically although she no longer seemed to recognize them and Mom went to her memorial service at the hospital. Mom said she always seemed to be content and well cared for. It was the best they could do given her tragic situation.

by Anonymous | reply 122 | January 6, 2025 9:20 AM |
R119, R120
I've read exactly the opposite. There was a severely developedmentally disabled girl to which the parents had her given large amounts of estrogen to cause early puberty (after giving her a hysterectomy). Doing this caused premature closure of the epiphysis which basically dwarfed her. The idea was that she would remain a manageable size so that they could continue care at home. If I can find a link, I'll add it. This was several years ago. I think they lived in the Pacific Northwest.
