If the Academy knows what’s good for them…
Then Coleman Domingo & Cynthia Erivo will be awarded best actor and actress in 2025. What better ‘fuck you’ to MAGA and call for inclusiveness than to award two black queer actors (and only the second black actress to win, a dark skinned black actress at that)?
Also, when Arianna inevitably (and deservedly) wins for best supporting actress it won’t be a good look for Cynthia to lose as it falls into the ‘having to work twice as hard for half as much’ camp that black women face.
If the Academy want to remain relevant in setting the tone then this should absolutely happen.

The Academy is not a hive mind, and given the many problems facing the movie industry these days, seeming ‘relevant’ is the least of their problems.
Academy members will vote for what they like and what moved or interested them, as they always have. I don’t see WICKED generally being the top pick for most members, even if they found it entertaining.
And does Erivo play well with others? Is she well-liked, does she spend much time in Hollywood? Is she as difficult as rumored? If the latter, her chances of a win (as opposed to a nomination) are not good. While there is clearly a block of voters of color who seem to confer with each other to back certain actors (I infer this from Angela Bassett getting an automatic special Oscar when she lost in her category the year before) it is no guarantee of anything.
In a year when Trump narrowly won the presidency because large swaths of the voting public were too lazy or indifferent to vote for Harris, who’s to say which Oscar wins will be “popular” with the viewing audience? And will any of it matter in the ratings?

R2, the Academy was broken from the start in that it was never really about honoring the best cinematic achievements of the year. Winning an Oscar is a combination of luck, timing, connections, campaigning, narrative, and performance -- with performance sometimes being the least important factor in who wins.
Marianne Jean Baptiste has one of the most acclaimed performances of the year, has won several major critics awards, and will likely not even be nominated for reasons having nothing to do with her work. The distributor is not a strong campaigner, she is a character actress competing against much bigger stars, and she is not as well-connected in Hollywood as her competition.
Cynthia and Ariana's performances are better than several Oscar winners of recent years (though it's blatant category fraud to have Grande in support), but I don't think either will take home the prize.

I still don't know how great Moore's chances are for The Substance. It's a cult hit and critics adore it, but there's a part of me that suspects it's more of an online phenomenon than something that appeals to rank-and-file Oscar voters. It's a better movie than Saltburn and I don't see it getting completely blanked, but I fear it'll follow a similar path as the buzzy, shock-value contender that performs pretty well all season, then gets slapped down by the Academy.

R84, The Substance has grossed $80M worldwide, a tremendous result for such an independent film. Demi is firmly in the mix with Qualley a distinct possibility for BSA and writer/director Fargeat a strong contender in screenplay and directing plus Best Make Up (it didn’t make the Oscar shortlists for VFX and Sound so won’t be included there). It is a strong contender for a Best Picture nomination.
I don’t know if it can win any of those but as the race heats up, Moore becomes more competitive in BA and Fargeat could win Screenplay.

I don’t think they are too stodgy these days, I mean the older 70-80voters were teens-30’s when the more daring movies of the 1970s came out. 30 years ago the 70-80 age group were teens/young adults when hays code movies were made.
AMPAS saved best actor a few years back as the last award thinking Chadwick Boseman was going to win, but got egg on their face when Anthony Hopkins won for a career best performance, so I don’t think they are that “woke” or interested in DEI.

Well EEAaO WAS an incoherent piece of shit, but with a bit of magical thinking, many in the Academy seemed to think that over-honoring it made them seem ‘current’ as well as being seen as redressing wrongs of the past. It really was the human interest Oscars, where every major winner had a sob story and some grievance they wanted righted by winning an award. And a bunch of pushovers in the Academy agreed with them.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | January 2, 2025 5:04 AM

That was a great win for Hopkins, R89. But even if the Ernest Borgnine contingent has died off and the elderly members are now guys like Pacino and De Niro, there's still enough people who will choose something like CODA over anything that's remotely daring.
I think what makes me worry about The Substance is that unlike the edgier movies that do really well with the Oscars, it's not uplifting. For all the butt plug jokes in Everything Everywhere and the graphic sex in Poor Things, they're pretty conventional in giving their protagonists almost heartwarming endings. The Substance goes for something just a bit different.

R107 to be fair many best actress winners were within degrading roles, it’s rewarding the actress torturing themselves. That said, it’s not the best look I agree.

Fuck off cunt @ R112 - Many high profile people have praised her performance. Adam McKay, Oliver Stone, Drew Barrymore, Ariana DeBose among them. You just like being a catty bitch about someone YOU dislike. I was merely stating what I've been reading including the Las Vegas odds.
“Wow! I had never heard of these two actresses before, but what a surprise to find their performances so fresh and different. Ariana Grande is a wonder, a darling with her sparkling eyes – who, I wonder, could have given birth to such an enchanting fairytale creature? And Cynthia Erivo brings a depth and intelligence to Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of Oz, which is very moving! -Oliver Stone
