Who would make a great "Odysseus"?
Matt Damon ... physicality and emotional depth
Christian Bale ... intensity and gravitas
Robert Pattinson ... deep emotional range portraying Odysseus’ struggles against fate and divine forces
Oscar Isaac ... a charismatic screen presence to effectively capture Odysseus’ charm and wit
Tom Hardy ... a dynamic performance, rugged persona, warrior spirit and intellectual prowess

I think Isaac looks the part, but Bale would be the one who could fully portray the role properly. Damon and Pattinson would not.

Isaac was very good as the careworn father/Duke in Dune and I could definitely see him as the weary Odysseus traveling home and trying to rebuild his life, but you need a younger man to play him during his early adventures.

Should they have cast Brenton Thwaites?

Pedro Pascal, based on his last of us performance which is the same type of character.
He also passes for Greek.

The thing about Odysseus is that aside from being a great warrior and leader, he had wit and was a master trickster. None of the guys above, except maybe Isaac (see Moon Night) could combine both warrior and quiet thinker into their performance. Sean Bean played Odysseus as a supporting role in one of those sandal flicks and fit the role well. There needs to be an "Aw shucks, why don't we just send them a wooden horse" kinda vibe.

Actually, OP's list is pretty good. And yes, Pascal is also a good choice. I chose Isaac - he was very good in Dune and great in Moon Knight. I'm just tired of Matt Damon.

I know DL loves to mock him for being a pretentious tool, but I could see Adam Driver in this role.

Oscar may be the only one with the right look for Odysseus. Why are all these white bread mother fuckers on the list?

Odysseus is a middle-aged man with a son who has just reached adulthood. When the Odyssey begins, he's been nearly twenty years away from Ithaca since he left to fight in the Trojan War.

I’m definitely for Oscar Isaacs playing the role. Like r28 said, no white men please.

But the real Odysseus was white.

*By which I mean... the character as conceived of by Homer (whoever that was) was a white man. (Of course the poem was fictional.)

Isaacs is OK, but Moon Knight was kind of boring. He looks it, but Bale can act it. Matt Damon is a good actor, maybe not for this. Damon will probably be it. It's what the Director settles on.

r48
Matt Damon is 45 Robert Pattinson is 38 Christian Bale is 50 Oscar Isaac is 45 Tom Hardy is 47
They're all within range. Odysseus was in his early 30s at the start of the Trojan War. He would then spend an additional ten years fighting. This would place him at around 40 or slightly older by war's end. Afterward, he faced another ten years of challenges on his journey home (nostos), making him approximately 50 or even into his early 60s by the time he returns to Ithaca. In Book 23, Antilochus describes Odysseus as being from “an earlier generation”; an “omogeronda,” which can be interpreted as “early-old man.” Odysseus was considered older than many of his contemporaries but still vigorous enough to compete with younger warriors like Achilles.
