Thank you, Sir.

Great link, OP you moron
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 29, 2024 9:14 PM |
Nothing yet from NYT in terms of breaking news. But they just emailed me to tell me what trick will make vegetables taste their best.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 29, 2024 9:15 PM |
it's on the DM
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 29, 2024 9:16 PM |
Thanks r6 for doing OP's job.

With elder statesman Carter's death, it makes you realize what a bunch of buffoons, clowns, and low life degenerates we have in Donald Trump & Company.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | December 29, 2024 9:17 PM |
DM? You mean the Dead to Me?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 29, 2024 9:17 PM |
lol, r5.
Apparently, nobody is minding the store. They take that time-off until Jan. 2nd seriously.
I've been bitching that they still don't have an Olivia Hussey obit up.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 29, 2024 9:17 PM |
So weird, the first alert I got was from TMZ. They know EVERYTHING.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 29, 2024 9:18 PM |
I'm glad this happened under Biden, and he will have a respectful funeral. Not sure if that would have happened under Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 29, 2024 9:18 PM |
Bill Clinton is now the last surviving US president to have been in office in the 20th century. We are all so very old.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 29, 2024 9:19 PM |
I'm assuming they pay, r14, because you're right.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 29, 2024 9:19 PM |
Apparently, nobody is minding the store. They take that time-off until Jan. 2nd seriously.
Apparently, the same is true for CNN and NBC. There’s nothing on either of their websites.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 29, 2024 9:19 PM |
I just checked that, too, r18 before I become glued to the Packers Vikings game.
Total absence of noting his death.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 29, 2024 9:21 PM |
R16- Not ALL of us eldergays are 100 years old.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 29, 2024 9:21 PM |
Nor BBC. Leave it to DL...
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 29, 2024 9:22 PM |
I hope the family refuses to invite The Rump.

Oof.
I'm glad this happened under Biden, and he will have a respectful funeral. Not sure if that would have happened under Trump.
Agree, r15.
But still, I hope the family doesn't request a Washington DC event. I'm worried about thin crowds which would be an embarrassment.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 29, 2024 9:24 PM |
I’m glad he and Rosalynn aren’t apart anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 29, 2024 9:25 PM |
R2, fuck you, you herpetic cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 29, 2024 9:25 PM |
RIP to the last president with a genuine heart and soul.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 29, 2024 9:26 PM |
A man of faith who always stood by convictions despite whether or not it was popular.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 29, 2024 9:26 PM |
Of course 2024 had to have one last fuck you.
RIP
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 29, 2024 9:26 PM |
His quality of life appeared to be total shit the last few years, so he is free now. RIP.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 29, 2024 9:27 PM |
Amy and Jason Carter have asked Beyonce to perform at the funeral.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 29, 2024 9:28 PM |
If you're ever in Atlanta, visit The Carter Center. He was an amazing man. You know he was a good guy for how much shit the media talks about him. History will look at us for the dumbasses we are.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 29, 2024 9:28 PM |
R16, interestingly Clinton, Bush, and Trump were all born within a two month period in 1946.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 29, 2024 9:28 PM |
How many of his obituary writers are themselves long dead?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 29, 2024 9:28 PM |
Let's see, Biden, Clinton, Bush, Obama.
I would imagine they'll attend the funeral. Trump probably doesn't want to go.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 29, 2024 9:29 PM |
He outlived Olivia Hussey.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 29, 2024 9:30 PM |
Trump the 2nd oldest living president now. He and Biden are older than Clinton!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 29, 2024 9:30 PM |
Requiescat in pace. A good and decent man. Too few left in politics today.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 29, 2024 9:30 PM |
I am glad he is at rest. It was so sad seeing him in such frail condition these last few years.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 29, 2024 9:31 PM |
r16 that's kind of mind-blowing. One thing than can make us really feel the passage of time.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 29, 2024 9:32 PM |
But Keith Richards is still alive. Makes you question clean, healthy living, doesn’t it?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 29, 2024 9:32 PM |
R31?????? No way they released a statement like that so soon. Why troll?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 29, 2024 9:34 PM |
Of course he was elderly. But this makes me sad. He showed the best of us. We're in short supply.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 29, 2024 9:35 PM |
But Keith Richards is still alive. Makes you question clean, healthy living, doesn’t it?
Not at all--that's an absurd comparison. Richards is only 81 today; Carter was nineteen years older.
I sincerely doubt Richards will make it all the way to 100.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 29, 2024 9:36 PM |
An incredible man. Thank you sir, for everything.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 29, 2024 9:36 PM |
Prior to Trump, Carter was the most unlikeliest to get elected. “Jimmy Who?”
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 29, 2024 9:37 PM |
No way will Trump be invited to his funeral. It will be a welcome snub before the inauguration.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 29, 2024 9:38 PM |
His last words on his deathbed was "Fuck You, Trump!" so I'm sure the family won't invite him.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 29, 2024 9:41 PM |
I remember when Truman died on Dec. 26, 1972. Followed, 27 days later, by LBJ.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 29, 2024 9:42 PM |
You'd think so, r48, but I think it's as likely that the family will, out of protocol, extend an invitation to Trump. Then Trump may decline.
but I wouldn't be surprised that that troll Trump would accept.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 29, 2024 9:42 PM |
He's one of the lucky ones.
Doesn't have to live under a second Trump regime.
He won't have to live through the terror and the destruction of the United States by MAGA cunts and Elon Musk.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 29, 2024 9:43 PM |
His grandson can FINALLY make the announcement he has been waiting to make!!
The little attention whore.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 29, 2024 9:43 PM |
For the youngsters:
This is what a great man is. A complete shame that the standards of devotion to public service & integrity died long before President Carter did.
May he RIP.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 29, 2024 9:45 PM |
I think Trump’s attendance depends on whether the family opts for a private funeral in Plains with a memorial church service in Atlanta rather than D.C.
Trump attended Ethel Kennedy's D.C. memorial service despite how all but two family members feel about him. He can't resist trying to make himself the center of attention, so I think he'd inflict himself on D.C. service. I think he'd be scared of there being too many blacks and Democrats in Atlanta.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 29, 2024 9:47 PM |
No, Della/R51. It isn’t happening. Trump will be snubbed.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | December 29, 2024 9:48 PM |
Considering that Trump is going to be president for four years and that there will be other special occasions during that time, the funeral may be an opportunity to mend fences before the next term starts.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 29, 2024 9:52 PM |
Trump went to Ethel’s funeral because he was mining RFK, Jr., voters.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 29, 2024 9:52 PM |
His grandson can FINALLY make the announcement he has been waiting to make!!
He already wrote it out:
"Fuck you all, the world is mine ! I inherited the family fortune from my grandpa!"
by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 29, 2024 9:52 PM |
Rip, it was a long time to spend in hospice
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 29, 2024 9:53 PM |
Sorry Della @ r1 but the correct phrase is “Thank You Mister President!”
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 29, 2024 9:54 PM |
The first candidate for president for whom I voted. Was for Teddy in ‘80, but ended up doing volunteer work for Carter’s general election.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 29, 2024 9:55 PM |
State Funeral but I haven't found when yet.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 29, 2024 9:56 PM |
Nice tribute on MSNBC - Chris Matthews was his speech writer and is giving some wonderful background stories of his time with Carter.
He was the first president I voted for - I liked him due to his honest demeanor and unique approach to the office. A truly good human being regardless of his presidential deficiencies.

Someone famous always seems to die close to the new year.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 29, 2024 9:58 PM |
Carter biographer Jon Alter on MSNBC is about 10 years off in gauging how long before the Truman retrospective began. It was the early ‘70s, not the ‘80s.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 29, 2024 9:58 PM |
May he rest now and be remembered for the wonderful man he was. He really did care. A farmer from Georgia that invited the Alan Bris to play his inauguration. He was a good role model.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | December 29, 2024 9:59 PM |
Looks like this is the 'official' thread of the many, as it has the most responses.
Nice writeup by Smithsonian Magazine.
I remember when Truman died on Dec. 26, 1972. Followed, 27 days later, by LBJ.
This scenario might be the only time I’d be fine likening Trump to LBJ.

lol, r61.
Oh. I stand corrected, Ms. Thomas.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 29, 2024 9:59 PM |
Damn. * He invited the Alman brothers
by Anonymous | reply 72 | December 29, 2024 10:00 PM |
I hope dump doesn’t go to the funeral because it becomes all about him and his rude pig behavior. Maybe he’ll show up and take a shit by poor Carters coffin. Kick the creep out if he shows up.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | December 29, 2024 10:02 PM |
They need to hold the funeral before or ON Trump's second inauguration.
That way, Biden will be the highest ranking President in attendance, and will be accorded the highest place of honor at the funeral, and NOT Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 29, 2024 10:05 PM |
Why does every news outlet refer to him as 'Former President Carter', yet for the last four years they referred to Trump as 'President Trump' and left out the word 'former' ?
by Anonymous | reply 76 | December 29, 2024 10:07 PM |
I still have so much Carter era memorabilia. Carter as a peanut with an enormous toothy smile, Carter flashing a peace sign with a peanut erection….
by Anonymous | reply 77 | December 29, 2024 10:07 PM |
That way, Biden will be the highest ranking President in attendance, and will be accorded the highest place of honor at the funeral, and NOT Trump.
Wouldn’t it be better to give the deceased the place of honor at his own funeral?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | December 29, 2024 10:09 PM |
I think he was a better president than generally credited, but a worse ex-president than thought.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | December 29, 2024 10:09 PM |
Why does every news outlet refer to him as 'Former President Carter', yet for the last four years they referred to Trump as 'President Trump' and left out the word 'former' ?
Same reason they always referred to President Obama and President Biden as simply "Obama" and "Biden," but always referred to Trump as "President Trump."
Because they're TRUMP ASS LICKERS!!!
by Anonymous | reply 80 | December 29, 2024 10:10 PM |
Trump referring to him as “Jimmy”!
by Anonymous | reply 81 | December 29, 2024 10:12 PM |
I'm guessing the Gerald Ford family will be invited.
I didn't know this until Ford died, but he and Carter developed a close friendship.
Gossip had it that one basis of the bond they had was their shared dislike of Ronald Reagan.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | December 29, 2024 10:12 PM |
Someone wrote a nice message from Trump. It sure as shit wasn't written by him, he can't even spell half those words.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | December 29, 2024 10:13 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 85 | December 29, 2024 10:14 PM |
I’m too young to remember his presdicency. Wasn’t he very unpopular at the time and generally considered a bad president for decades after? How did public opinion about him do such a 180?
by Anonymous | reply 87 | December 29, 2024 10:15 PM |
Yup, r85.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | December 29, 2024 10:16 PM |
At least one representative of the immediate descendants of former presidents are typically invited. I imagine Susan Ford might represent her family. Tricia Nixon always comes to these events.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 29, 2024 10:17 PM |
King Charles will attend the funeral as well as Justin Trudeau and Emmanuel Macron. I'm assuming this and would be shocked if they don't. Other world leaders as well but not sure who.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | December 29, 2024 10:18 PM |
I remember being so excited voting for him after being newly registered to vote. Going into the voting booth at 18 was such a thrill.
He was a great man and this is an inevitable but sad loss. I doubt there will be any more men with similar characteristics to grace the political landscape in my lifetime. RIP.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | December 29, 2024 10:22 PM |
That's an impressive statement from the Bidens.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | December 29, 2024 10:23 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 93 | December 29, 2024 10:24 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 29, 2024 10:25 PM |
Here's to you Jimmy, I'm toasting with a glass of wine for being a good human being.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | December 29, 2024 10:27 PM |
Damn Jimmy, couldn't you have held until January 18th or so, just to fuck with Dump's media cycle?
Oh well, you were a good person and had a good, long life. The rest of us should follow your example. RIP.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | December 29, 2024 10:29 PM |
He seemed like a truly good man. R.I.P. 🙏
by Anonymous | reply 97 | December 29, 2024 10:30 PM |
I voted for him twice. But MSNBC, please stop with the talk that he wanted to live long enough to vote for Kamala. It has reminded me of Nancy’s (fanciful) story that her long-demented Ronnie looked at her clear-eyed right before taking his last breath.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | December 29, 2024 10:31 PM |
Rest in Power, Mr. Carter.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | December 29, 2024 10:33 PM |
R102, the Clintons had a long, tortured history with Carter, starting with blaming him for Bill’s gubernatorial reelection loss in 1980.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | December 29, 2024 10:37 PM |
I hope some of the leaders of certain African countries are invited--and they attend; former President Carter truly did the Lord's work there. Back in the days when I had more disposable income I regularly donated my widow's mite to The Carter Center; one of the things I loved was the Center allowed donors to direct their funds to the missions closest to their hearts, and I always chose Guinea-worm and other river blindness eradication programs. That was a huge deal for me, and I loved how I'd get regular updates by mail; the day I received a letter stating blindness from Guinea-worm had been eradicated, I broke into tears--I'm teary now, remembering it. Can you imagine--a widespread pestilence that devastated lives, families, and economies over MILLENNIA, [bold]GONE.[/bold]
I love that man and his wife. Rest in the sweetest peace, Jimmy and Rosalynn.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | December 29, 2024 10:38 PM |
President Carter had solar panels installed on the white house. And the next administration immediately removed the panels.
This was an educated man from a prominent Southern family dismissed as a peanut farmer while his predecessor was a third rate actor who ratted on his peers during the red scare.
Maga is a contrarian, abortive, destructive bowel moment and I am dishonoring the memory of a President who spent HIS dotage building affordable homes for Americans and writing poetry.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | December 29, 2024 10:40 PM |
There were some digs at Dump in that statement R102. Like the Panama Canal remark. It's sure to trigger Mango Mussolini.

About his successors, Carter said that he was treated best by the HW Bush White House.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | December 29, 2024 10:42 PM |
I'm watching Argo tonight.
I imagine he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol, and that there will be a religious service in D.C. for dignitaries. But his private funeral for family will be in Plains. I'd imagine we will see heads of state attending this funeral. Or at least representatives from the UK, France African countries, Middle East, etc. Egypt and Jordan will for sure send representatives. I think this is gonna be an international event. They ought to ask Al Gore to speak because he and Jimmy were friends.

I just discovered that Jimmy Carter was related to Berry Gordy through his mother.
Carter was born Bessie Lillian Gordy on August 15, 1898, in Richland, Georgia, to James Jackson Gordy and Mary Ida Nicholson Gordy. She was the niece of Berry Gordy I, who was the paternal half-brother of James Jackson Gordy and the grandfather of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy.[1]

I was just going to say the same thing, r103.
There were hard feelings for a while, but over time, they patched things up and let bygones be bygones.
And you're right. Carter made the mistake of lecturing Fidel Castro on the conditions in his prisons and challenged him to release his political prisoners and the US would take them in.
"Here ya go", Castro said, and sent over his hardened violent criminals and mentally challenged prisoners and Carter housed some them at a US federal facility in Arkansas while Clinton was the governor, pissing Clinton off to no end.
And Carter, by credible accounts, had a mean streak that Clinton felt on occasion.
One of Clinton's aides tattled on him and said that it would irk Clinton that Carter enjoyed such a saintly reputation when he knew that Carter could be mean as a snake.
I think a contributing dynamic between the two is that there was room for only one Southern Man to sit at the top of the heap of national politics, and they competed for it.

I loved Jimmy Carter, but he had to put up with a lot of classism from the media, even Amy was criticized for not being adorable enough. It’s pretty remarkable when you see the way that his family reflected “red”American values and were thoroughly trashed for them. Now wrestlers and evangelicals are part of the Trump coalition yet twisted in a completely opposite way.

R132, as much as I detest Trump, I don’t think that was ever a possibility had Carter denied during his administration. He didn’t do that to senior Bush. He resisted honoring McCain, but McCain wasn’t a president, but a senator with whom he had a tortured relationship.

One of my favorite Carter memories is of him, accepting the ‘80 nomination, extolling Democratic predecessors, and the great Democrat who should’ve been president, “Hubert Horatio Hornblower … Humphrey.”

There was quite an ABC - anyone but Carter - movement in the spring/summer of 1976. Jerry Brown, then just 38, entered the late primaries, winning some, as did Frank Church. But all eyes turned to Humphrey as the only one who could wrest the nomination from Carter. After weeks of intensive lobbying of him, Humphrey scheduled a press conference. Everyone expected he was jumping in, but he announced he was not. Maybe because the cancer that would take his life in 18 months had returned.

Statesman and President Jimmy Carter, was the ultimate Influencer.
Now, this honorable and charitable humanitarian departs, leaving those left behind to reflect on a time not so long ago when integrity, decency and truth were considered not weaknesses, but positive attributes. President Carter and the values he encompassed are sorely missed.
Thank you, President Carter. Rest in Peace.

I found it odd that neither QE II nor the Queen Mother wore tiaras at the Carter State Dinner so I was curious about other State Dinners she attended: Eisenhower, Ford, Reagan, GHWB, and GWB. She wore tiaras on those occasions. Did the Foreign Office suggest this given Carter's homespun simplicity?
Carter enjoyed such a saintly reputation when he knew that Carter could be mean as a snake.
I remember being surprised and disappointed when I read about the mean streak. I don't recall specific examples, if there were any. I image it would have given away who was in the room with him. I wonder how much of it had to do with being under scrutiny from D.C. insiders who wrote him off as a bumpkin, despite an Annapolis education. Being looked down upon can make a person defensive and a little bitter.

I remember like it was yesterday when I was a senior in high school, a day before the election. I turned 17 a few weeks later. My US History teacher, an admired, respected. elegant Jewish woman in her 50s, told the class, "God help America if Ronald Reagan becomes President." One of the students asked what would be wrong with Reagan as President (he came from a very wealthy family) and she said, " He's out to destroy the middle class." She also encouraged us to 'always vote Democrat' for the rest of our lives.
Those simple sentences have stayed with me all these years. I have crossed paths with her over the years, and always remind her I was one of her students in 1980-81, and I have always voted Democrat like she told us to do (plus my family always voted Blue). She would simply smile and say ,'I taught you something right'.
BTW, one of our fellow students works in a nursing home where our teacher has been for a number of years (she outlived her husband and two daughters). She will be 100 soon.

Jimmy caught a lot of shit when he was POTUS. Even then they were setting the table for the GOP take over. A Reporter from the Boston Globe, Oliphant, who covered Carter talked about it tonight on CNN. He said D.C. was even more snobbish than NYC society, and they hated Carter and looked down on him and gave him a rough time and he gave it right back. They looked down on this hick from Georgia and his "Georgia Mafia" and ridiculed his policies and his initiatives and really made it difficult to get things through Congress. Carter could be stubborn and he always felt he was right. So that didn't help. But on Energy policy, The Environment, Human Rights, Russia, The Middle East, Education, etc. he was way ahead of his times.

Having read this egotistic vulgarity I think it extremely unlikely the forthcoming 'President' would decline to attend Carter's State Funeral. It's all about the optics for him: huge occasion, look at me.
The Felon is without shame, so hearing radiant eulogies about Carter's decency won't bother him one bit, he'll just imagine they're talking about him. That said, the body language of grandees around the insurrectionist will be of interest.
The clunking tweet 'tribute' also appears to have omitted the word 'enough' after 'fortunate', as though so eager to get to the 'exclusive club' part. Amusing that Trump now thinks of Obama as part of his special club.

by Anonymous | reply 209 | December 30, 2024 8:40 AM |
Indeed, it was. Peter Baker, right before the NYT became flakey in its coverage of the GOP, exposed another, honest to goodness, real life Republican conspiracy. John Connolly (yes, that one) flew to the Middle East to broker the deal keeping American citizens in captivity so Reagan could get elected.
Ben Barnes was the confessor who accompanied Connolly on the GOP's extra-legal trip to undermine American democracy long before 2016 rolled around.

R166 - I volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity Store in Charlottesville, VA several years ago. It was a GREAT experience - the people who worked there as well as the patrons who visited the store were truly wonderful. They have you do all kinds of things based on what needs to be done - I was there for 2-4 hours per day over about a year. They give you a brief interview (a formality) then create an account for you to sign up online to volunteer on the days that are available and would work for you.
I highly recommend volunteering if it works for your schedule. If you go there with an open attitude then you will get a lot out of the opportunity and it will stay with you for a long time. Giving your time is 'free' but the payback is priceless.

Carter supported gay marriage :
Carter has stated that he supports same-sex marriage in civil ceremonies.[20] He said: "I believe Jesus would. I don't have any verse in scripture ... I believe Jesus would approve gay marriage, but that's just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don't see that gay marriage damages anyone else".[20] Evangelist Franklin Graham criticized the assertion as "absolutely wrong".[21][22] In October 2014, Carter argued ahead of a Supreme Court ruling that legalization of same-sex marriage should be left up to the states and not mandated by federal law.[23]

R254, Peter Baker in the Times recounts a mutual shouting match in the Clinton White House following a Carter trip abroad. And how Clinton snubbed Carter at 1993 inaugural festivities when, days earlier, Carter, whose daughter Amy attended a public school, had criticized the decision to place Chelsea in a private DC school.

R208 Can’t the family deny him from attending. Does he have to attend.
by Anonymous | reply 260 | January 1, 2025 12:34 AM |
Wouldn’t that just feed into his anti-establishment bona fides that served him so well in this election, R260?
by Anonymous | reply 261 | January 1, 2025 12:38 AM |
As pious as Carter seemed to be in office, it’s interesting that his presidency coincided with the disco era.
by Anonymous | reply 262 | January 1, 2025 1:14 AM |
R261 Listen as a Christian, I wouldn’t want a fascist at my funeral. As a grieving family member, I wouldn’t want him there either. He is too destructive.
by Anonymous | reply 264 | January 1, 2025 12:56 PM |
Not just destructive, the media would focus on his antics.
by Anonymous | reply 265 | January 1, 2025 1:23 PM |
I’m really surprised this thread doesn’t have 600 replies by yesterday.

r266, the DL thread from a year and half ago, when it was first announced that Carter was first going into hospice way longer than this.
I wonder if everything has been said between that thread and this one.
I'll say, though, one of my favorite types of DL threads is coming up-one about a nationally televised funeral and that will be Carter's Jan 9th.
by Anonymous | reply 269 | January 1, 2025 4:51 PM |
R266 Maybe because there are something like a dozen threads on Carter.

Sick of hearing about it.

Which world leaders have confirmed that they will attend the state funeral so far?
by Anonymous | reply 277 | January 2, 2025 7:38 AM |
Our once & future favorite president has said he’ll be in attendance.

The Babylon Bee reported that despite the stories in the press to the contrary, the White House insists Jimmy Carter is still sharp and focused behind closed doors.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | January 3, 2025 12:45 AM |
I hate to write it, but I doubt Carter's state funeral would draw either UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer or Prince William, or even Justin Trudeau.
It's not a state funeral for what was a serving US President.
If I'm wrong, I'll be the first to be pleased about that.
by Anonymous | reply 280 | January 3, 2025 12:54 AM |
I left King Charles out because I'm guessing if the UK and the BRF decide to send their highest delegation, KC might send Prince William instead because of his health.
But again, I'd be surprised if Prince William or Charles attend.

Why would they?

Sheer diplomacy at a volatile time. The Felon seeing William at such an event would be seen in his mafioso little head as a mark of respect for the US, and all his maga-planned ways. Some sort of 'special relationship' might thus continue. If William has other commitments, the new UK Ambassador to the US Lord Mandelson is likely to show his face at such an important event. In fact he's likely to attend with or without William.

Pancreatic cancer took the lives of most of his family. His father at 58, sister Ruth at 54, sister Gloria at 63 and brother Billy at 51. “The only difference between me and my siblings,” he said, “was that I never smoked a cigarette.” He added, “My daddy smoked regularly. All of them smoked.”

r284, my writing should have conveyed what I knew that Biden did declare it a state funeral.
I meant, and could be wrong, that a foreign country's decision on who to send may take into account whether the funeral is one for who formerly was in office- Carter served in the late 70s- with one who died while serving in office, which I think would merit whoever is head of state to be in attendance.
I'm certainly not the protocol or diplomacy police. For all I know, say, King Charles, the heads of state of many of the African countries that Carter helped, Macron all will be there.
by Anonymous | reply 288 | January 3, 2025 2:57 PM |
It's hard to know whether Justin Trudeau will go. He does have a personal connection to Carter because his father & Carter served in office at the same time and because Carter went to his Dad's funeral in 2000, but Trudeau has a political crisis over his own future to decide right now.

And, a gracious response:
President-elect Donald Trump reacted Friday to the U.S. flag being flown at half-staff during Inauguration Day, writing that "nobody wants to see this."
"The Democrats are all 'giddy' about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at 'half mast' during my Inauguration," the incoming president wrote on Truth Social. "They think it's so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don't love our Country, they only think about themselves." He added: "Look at what they've done to our once GREAT America over the past four years - It's a total mess! In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast. Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let's see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

With the Panama Canal back in the news, love this story, re-told by The Times's Peter Baker, about Carter's efforts to get a key vote needed to ratify the treaty. That senator was S. I. ("Sam") Hayakawa, a one-termer from California.
A colorful character, Mr. Hayakawa gave Mr. Carter a copy of a book on semantics that he had written. Mr. Carter, ever the dutiful student, read it that night, then called the senator the next day and demonstrated enough knowledge to prove that he really had.
That still was not enough, so finally, playing to senatorial vanity, Mr. Baker arranged to call Mr. Carter with Mr. Hayakawa listening to ask if the president needed to meet occasionally with the California senator to get his advice on foreign affairs. “I gulped, thought for a few seconds, and replied, ‘Yes, I really do!’ hoping God would forgive me,” Mr. Carter later wrote.
Jonathan Alter, author of “His Very Best,” a 2020 biography of Mr. Carter, wrote that Mr. Hayakawa wanted Mr. Carter to commit to meeting every two weeks. “Sam, I couldn’t possibly limit our visits to every two weeks,” Mr. Carter replied cleverly. “I might want to hear your advice more often!” Mr. Hayakawa signed onto the treaty and, as Mr. Alter wrote, “that was the last time S.I. Hayakawa ever spoke to Jimmy Carter.”

That Son-of-a Bitch Trump, who should be in federal prison along with other Americans currently there for possessing classified docs, and instead, mind-bogglingly, will have all the power of the US Presidency, and what the US Supreme Court pulled out of thin air and in the immunity decision and handed him, still is small enough to be pre-occupied with wanting to bitch about at flag at half-staff.
Fuck you, Americans who voted for this ignorant, insecure, POS.

r298, that's an eye-opener. I didn't know that Carter lied while president and practiced deception with people who thought they were his friends. His public image is different than that.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | January 5, 2025 5:28 AM |
I've been a supporter of his since he ran for POTUS. He was my first Presidential vote. I've read a lot of stuff, and one thing about the Carters that always made me smile, is that when he was first running for President in the Primary season, his campaign had no money. None. So he would often stay at people's houses as he traveled across the country campaigning. He was literally "Jimmy Who?" for a long time.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | January 5, 2025 5:47 PM |
Out of the blue today I wanted to hear ‘’puff the magic dragon’’. Didn’t know there was a connection-Yarrow was pardoned hours before Carter left office. Not sure how I feel about that?
I didn't know that Carter lied while president and practiced deception with people who thought they were his friends.
Hayakawa was a Republican, tam o shanter-wearing, one term joke who regularly napped on the Senate floor. He was a former English professor who arrogantly presumed he had sufficient knowledge and experience in geopolitics and foreign policy to demand a meeting with the POTUS every two weeks. Carter played the scenario perfectly.

I worry that the images of Carter lying in state in the Rotunda will show sparse lines.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | January 8, 2025 12:42 PM |
R314 how were the lines when you were there? People flew in from all over the country yesterday so they could stand outside in the freezing weather waiting for the old midshipman to pass by.
Are there other things you worry about?
by Anonymous | reply 315 | January 8, 2025 12:48 PM |
How's the view from your scolding moral high horse, 315?
I noted when the state funeral was announced, before those terrible LA fires, that from on optics standpoint, if I were a Carter family member, I'd wonder there would be no lines to pay respects when he lies in state the rotunda.
And I stand by that question.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | January 8, 2025 1:07 PM |
Anyone else pay their respects to someone lying in state at the Capitol Rotunda? As a midwestern, 20-year old, Senate intern new to the job, I paid my respects to Hubert Humphrey in 1978. When I subsequently expressed my unhappiness with the lack of Black faces in line similarly paying their respects for an early civil rights champion, a fellow intern, a white woman from Maine, responded by saying maybe Black people didn’t think Humphrey did enough. I let her know how little I thought of that argument.
by Anonymous | reply 317 | January 8, 2025 1:37 PM |
It’s not the opening of a Marvel film. People who want to pay their respects will get their chance. So what if the lines aren’t long.
by Anonymous | reply 318 | January 8, 2025 1:45 PM |
It's only been open to the public since 8:30 yesterday evening. You can't really judge lines yet.
