Fresh Air with Terry Gross

I know everyone just adores NPR's Fresh Air host and executive producer - Terry Gross. Let us discuss Gross and her Peabody Award winning NPR magazine talk show - Fresh Air here.

I only know her from her very aggressive questioning of Secretary Clinton that made headlines over her gay marriage evolution before the 2016 race. Another case of the left eating their own.

OP, not sure everyone adores Terry Gross. I think she's fine, but not everyone's cup of tea. IIRC, I've read some pretty negative comments by DLers. I'll try to find the thread.

Secretary Clinton's fault. Both of the Clintons are prickly as fuck about about questions and comments that they don't like. This is rather difficult to understand given their careers. Hillary Clinton who had served as Secretary of State, a position (and a department) where a deft hand in addressing criticism or hard questions would seem, in theory at least, something of a requisite. Bill Clinton light up like an angry red lightbulb. George H.W. Bush was much the same. With a long career that included Congressman, agency head, and US Ambassador to the UN, again, in theory, his career ought to have given him a bit of practice and answering a question with an agenda behind it, or simply answering the question he wished he had been asked, But George HW Bush was worse than the Clinton's in the visible anger and rise of his hackles.

No doubt a few questions are so bizarre or agitated that they may deserve a brush off, but I don't have much respect for people with decades long careers in public service to show their hand too easily and get sour and snippy with the inevitable critical (i.e., non-flattering) question.) When it's your bread and butter, learn how to handle questions and interviews.

Does she have a lesbian lover back in Japan?

by Anonymousreply 5December 29, 2024 12:50 PM

I love his schwetty balls

Well, not EVERYONE just adores Terry Gross.

I remember the Bill O'Reilly trainwreck and being pissed that she was forced to apologize.

It was disgraceful.

Mr. O'Reilly was later exposed and driven back into his cave and Terry soldiered on.

My favorite Terry Gross gaffe was in an interview with Bea Arthur when Terry got something wrong about which production of Threepenny Opera she had been in. Bea responded, “What are you, crazy?” and proceeded to correct Terry. I was surprised it hadn't been edited out.

She had a very fucking prickly interview many years ago with Jon Stewart that made me hate him. Stewart was in an obviously pissy mood and, at the start, of the interview where Gross was providing background and being flattering to his show, Stewart clearly misunderstood a compliment as snark and was unrelentingly unpleasant for the long remainder of the interview. She couldn't apologize, she couldn't explain, she couldn't carry on with the interview...he was churlish as fuck. She appeared to cut It off prematurely and simply walked out as she was talking.

He was somehow so predisposed to hate the interview and so childish about it that I never saw him as funny after that.

I always loved it when the late, great Molly Ivins came on as a guest. You can tell which guests Terry Gross enjoyed the most due to their repeated visits and rapport.

by Anonymousreply 12December 29, 2024 7:43 PM

Yeah, I do love her, and I'm dreading the inevitable time when she is retiring. I think her interview style is pretty effective and the way I would interview. She is usually not antagonistic. She is fair and in my opinion, not even hard on her guests. She is open about what she wants to discuss, but not aggressive.

I thought Hillary Clinton was unnecessarily harsh. But the cake was taken by Adam Driver who left the interview because Terri had the nerve to play a clip from one of his movies - which he had told her he would not appreciate.

by Anonymousreply 13December 29, 2024 8:35 PM

Fun fact - her father had a leg chopped off by a train in an accident when he was young.

by Anonymousreply 14December 29, 2024 8:37 PM

I've always hated her-- in some ways more than Jennifer Garner and Jason Sudeikis. She's pompous and smarmy.

by Anonymousreply 15December 29, 2024 8:38 PM

She's mostly about her voice and not much more.

by Anonymousreply 16December 29, 2024 8:45 PM

How do you know EVERYONE adores this person? I'm tired of trolls trying to make someone a DL icon.

by Anonymousreply 17December 29, 2024 8:48 PM

Eat shit r17

by Anonymousreply 18December 29, 2024 8:54 PM

Great point, r17

by Anonymousreply 20December 29, 2024 9:04 PM

She’s straight.

by Anonymousreply 21December 29, 2024 9:05 PM

Lmao r21

by Anonymousreply 22December 29, 2024 9:06 PM

I don't want to be difficult but I don't adore her.

by Anonymousreply 23December 29, 2024 10:34 PM

R7 I thought that was Fran Liebowitz.

by Anonymousreply 24December 29, 2024 10:36 PM

I like her. I miss hearing her during my formerly long work commutes. She makes anyone/anything interesting to me.

by Anonymousreply 25December 29, 2024 11:10 PM

Hands down, she has the best female voice across radio or television.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Gene Simmons interview! I was driving when it broadcast. My mouth dropped open, I gasped, screamed, and cackled a lot. The best part is that Simmons refused to allow NPR to post the interview to the website.

[QUOTE]Things really went off the rails, however, when Simmons began talking about the studded codpiece he wears onstage. “It holds in my manhood,” he said. “Otherwise it would be too much for you to take. You’d have to put the book down and confront life. The notion is that if you want to welcome me with open arms, I’m afraid you’re also going to have to welcome me with open legs.”

R20 wins the thread!

by Anonymousreply 28December 30, 2024 7:35 AM

I really like her, and have for decades.

I don’t however, love her style of interviewing, which seems antiquated sometimes. She rarely seems in the moment. It’s like she’s carefully crafted her set of questions (which I find extremely admirable) but doesn’t take the responses into account much. If someone responds in an interesting way rather than follow-up or explore that topic more she just plows to the next question. (I think Barbara Walter’s was similar.)
