Nicole Kidman bombs again with "Baby Girl"

$20 million budget and barely made $5 million worldwide since it opened.

Has she ever been able to open a movie? It's one bomb after another ....

She’s living a beautiful and productive life while you are here counting pennies.

I feel sorry for you.

Don’t like her? Don’t see the movie like the rest of the world. She won’t mind. She’s busy picking out her Oscar dress.

by Anonymousreply 1December 28, 2024 7:56 PM

Ho hum. I haven't really liked anything she has done since the movie 'Dead Calm' in which she almost gets strangled on a boat in the middle of the ocean. She looked so virginal, a look I have never seen again in her play acting.

by Anonymousreply 2December 28, 2024 7:57 PM

Baby Girl has a 77% rotten tomato score among critics. Kidman's been considered a star for almost 25 years with 5 Oscar Nominations and she's still considered A-list. She's messing up her face, but most aging narcissists do.

by Anonymousreply 6December 28, 2024 8:16 PM

It could be, and I'm one of them, that I'm a bit sick of her.

Just this year alone:

Expats

A Family Affair

Baby Girl

The Perfect Couple

I realize that she's almost 60, but damn, she really needs to give us (the movie going public) a rest.

by Anonymousreply 7December 28, 2024 8:27 PM

[quote] [R2] is 90 years old

R3 Thank you, dear. You are so clever!

by Anonymousreply 8December 28, 2024 8:29 PM

I appreciate she chooses to make non commercial films like Destroyer and Birth and Rabbit Hole but she needs to choose better

by Anonymousreply 9December 28, 2024 8:29 PM

Nobody wanted to see an overexposed mediocre actress play a postmenopausal woman experience a sexual reawakening. I’m shocked!

by Anonymousreply 10December 28, 2024 8:32 PM

I saw her onstage in The Blue Room back in 1998 and she was fantastic. She's an excellent stage actress and I wish she had done more theatre.

by Anonymousreply 11December 28, 2024 8:35 PM

This was only released in movie theaters in hopes that Nicole would receive an Oscar nomination. Now that seems unlikely so it was another waste of people’s time.

by Anonymousreply 12December 28, 2024 8:40 PM

It's a niche film. It was likely never expected to do major numbers at the box office.

by Anonymousreply 13December 29, 2024 3:32 AM

R2 same! She was terrific in that, and Billy Zane has his hair. I can't think of any other film where her performance or the movie really resonated

by Anonymousreply 14December 29, 2024 3:35 AM

She was also good in To Die For and the Others.

The rest is pretty forgettable. Far and Away was a visually beautiful film, but I don't know if I recall her acting job being outstanding.

by Anonymousreply 15December 29, 2024 3:37 AM

The only two Nicole movies I can watch are "The Others" and "Far and Away."

She was excellent in both.

by Anonymousreply 16December 29, 2024 3:40 AM

OP is making a pretty rash judgment based on the first three days of release. It’ll probably do fine in the long run, especially if she gets nominated.

by Anonymousreply 17December 29, 2024 4:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 18December 29, 2024 4:26 AM

I liked her in Moulin Rouge. It's been awhile.

by Anonymousreply 19December 29, 2024 4:48 AM

It’s an independent film about a 60 year old woman in a dominant-submissive relationship with a man in his 20s, not Sonic 3.

by Anonymousreply 20December 29, 2024 4:49 AM

They spent THAT much on an independent film???

by Anonymousreply 21December 29, 2024 4:53 AM

Not a bomb if she's going after the gays. Every other one I know seems to be posting an IG story from a Babygirl screening this week.

I'm not. Harris Dickinson doesn't get naked. I can see him nude in previous projects at home.

by Anonymousreply 22December 29, 2024 4:55 AM

I'd watch her in a remake of The Night Porter

by Anonymousreply 23December 29, 2024 4:59 AM

[quote] They spent THAT much on an independent film???

$20 million is pocket change for a movie.

by Anonymousreply 24December 29, 2024 5:11 AM

She’s fantastic in Moulin Rouge! I just rewatched it on Christmas Day. What an amazing film.

by Anonymousreply 25December 29, 2024 5:29 AM

r15 here. I had forgotten Moulin Rouge, which I loved and is one of the few movies I own. I haven't watched it in about 4 years though, so it wasn't top of mind for me.

But I agree she was great in it, and she had terrific chemistry with Ewan. I can totally believe they hooked up/had an affair on set (and perhaps after). I think I heard that this was a big impetus behind Tammy and Nicole's divorce.

by Anonymousreply 26December 29, 2024 5:33 AM

I don’t think a $7M opening week domestically for this film is a bomb. I don’t think it’s going to be some big hit but it might do $30M worldwide and will have a life on streaming. It does have a GG nomination. But I don’t think she’ll get an Oscar nomination. The film is too tawdry and her performance isn’t in service to anything. For a film about female sexuality, it really treats her character as more of a “disease of the week” heroine, someone in search of a cure for what ails her. I found that really off-putting. The film treats her like a freak. And I’ll never get passed the idea that a woman married to Antonio Banderas has never had an orgasm with him. That’s just ludicrous.

by Anonymousreply 27December 29, 2024 5:51 AM

Not to mention she kind of overdid the press for this and ALL HER ORGASMS, OH MY GOD, I CAN'T STOP ORGASMING!

by Anonymousreply 28December 29, 2024 5:56 AM

Nobody wants to see close ups of a botoxed, Frankenstein face having orgasms.

Nobody.

by Anonymousreply 29December 29, 2024 6:04 AM

I hate when she's sexual, I've seen it before. No tits it ass. Now she's elderly. Do a film where a 57yo man is just as sexual.

by Anonymousreply 30December 29, 2024 8:15 AM

I think she’ll still manage to get an Oscar nomination since it’s pretty clear a PR team has been working overtime to push Babygirl.

I recently came to the realization that while I’ve seen multiple movies starring Harris Dickinson, I couldn’t pick him out of a lineup. He makes zero impression.

by Anonymousreply 31December 29, 2024 9:10 AM

Off topic, but James Marsden must be laughing all the way to the bank.

by Anonymousreply 32December 29, 2024 9:14 AM

I saw it and it was uncomfortable to watch

by Anonymousreply 33December 29, 2024 9:33 AM

She’s a wooden actress with a weird plastic face and an anorexic looking body. There’s nothing sexual about her. They need to stop putting her in these sex-kitten roles and then wondering why they bomb.

by Anonymousreply 34December 29, 2024 9:47 AM

[quote] $20 million is pocket change for a movie.

It needs to make $60 million to break even.

by Anonymousreply 35December 29, 2024 9:51 AM

[quote] I think she’ll still manage to get an Oscar nomination

No way in hell. Too many people already.

by Anonymousreply 36December 29, 2024 9:51 AM

Now a three minute orgasm from Dickinson, that I’d watch.

by Anonymousreply 37December 29, 2024 1:23 PM

Good movie and of course an arthouse thing didn’t slay the box office. You must be a big fan of childish Marvel slop then?

by Anonymousreply 38December 29, 2024 1:52 PM

I have asked this before but I will again—WHY is Nicole Kidman getting all of these roles?! She looks bizarre, is not sexy or appealing, is completely overexposed, etc. She isn’t bringing in money or box office. Isn’t there anyone else at all??

by Anonymousreply 39December 29, 2024 3:07 PM

R39, she had the resources to work around strikes and contract changes.

I wanted to believe that we respect the same rights for women as we do for men. If that was true, Nicole would pull a Michael Douglas, ditch the Keith, and shack up with a twunk named “Josh” who drives a very loud Honda Civic.

by Anonymousreply 40December 29, 2024 3:27 PM

Honestly, op. When was the last time you willing paid to see the woman star in anything? For me, it was 20 years ago when I paid to see the remake of the Stepford Wives. A terrible film.

Kidman makes and stars in bad films and is a-list? After starring in flop after flop.

Her acting skilsl and looks are limited.

I don't understand how or why she gets work now that Weinstein is imprisoned.

by Anonymousreply 41December 29, 2024 4:00 PM

She gets work because she will work for less and take a producer credit. She’s also a champion for women directors, although the product is often mediocre. I think her TV shows are seen as ratings drivers due to her female fan base. People know a Nicole Kidman miniseries will be a campy and mildly pleasant affair. But this movie will not last.

by Anonymousreply 42December 29, 2024 4:07 PM

Nicole is having one giant mid-life crisis. I remember the 2022 Vanity Fair cover where she's half-dressed like a teenager. So many of these 50 something actresses are intent on showing their skinny bodies and obvious plastic surgery reconfigurations at every turn. Babygirl is a hard pass.

by Anonymousreply 43December 29, 2024 4:08 PM

I read somewhere that she is intentionally doing all this work to promote female directors/writers/producers, etc. Because she knows she can get a project greenlit, she puts her name and self in women-created projects that might not otherwise see the light of day.

by Anonymousreply 44December 29, 2024 4:16 PM

Kidman is 60 years old and is as grimly determined to be and remain a star as Joan Crawford ever was. This determination is expressed through a refusal to sit still, endless publicity and a cold, flat expression in their eyes. While JC made dozens of entertaining film that are still worth watching even now, Kidman doesn't!

by Anonymousreply 45December 29, 2024 4:22 PM

It didn't make $7 million this weekend, more like two

by Anonymousreply 46December 29, 2024 4:32 PM

4.2 million in 8 days

by Anonymousreply 47December 29, 2024 4:33 PM

I have a mild interest in seeing this film….on streaming for free.

by Anonymousreply 48December 29, 2024 4:35 PM

[quote]While JC made dozens of entertaining film that are still worth watching even now

no, not really

by Anonymousreply 49December 29, 2024 5:10 PM

Yeah R46,I thought it would have a bigger multiplier based on its Christmas Day box office but it’s already dropped off.

$4.2M for the week.

by Anonymousreply 50December 29, 2024 5:12 PM

Plus, terrible wig.

by Anonymousreply 51December 29, 2024 5:14 PM

Crawford has made many movies worth re-seeing, even nearly a century later.

Rain

Grand Hotel,

The women

Mildred Pierce

The Damned don't cry

Possessed

Johnny guitar

Baby Jane

Berserk!

by Anonymousreply 52December 29, 2024 6:02 PM

Thanks r52. The other poster is being a contrarian.

Your list doesn't include FEMALE ON THE BEACH, a person favorite nor Harriet Craig or Queen Bee, two runner ups.

by Anonymousreply 53December 29, 2024 6:10 PM

I saw it. It was easily the most tedious movie I have seen in years. I couldn’t walk out since I was watching it with friends. Everything was unbelievable starting with that stupid dog rescue scene that introduces her lover. The necktie sniffing? The pools scenes in December? The ice packs? And please spare me another rendition of Mozarts Requiem in a movie. Only positive side, Antonio Banderas is an extremely hot daddy.

by Anonymousreply 54December 29, 2024 6:20 PM

Im not interested r54, I was interested in THE SUBSTANCE and I have seen it and was not disappointed.

by Anonymousreply 55December 29, 2024 9:14 PM

The trailer for “Babygirl” made me intrigued because it seemed there was something of a minor comic undertow at play. Having seen it, there isn’t. It’s all sincere.

Also, the appearance of Kidman’s face at this point after decades of plastic surgery is kind of horrifying. I kept thinking how close it is in this movie to Baby Jane Hudson- the bright pink rouge, overdone brows, and clumpy mascara. I couldn’t decide if she was intentionally going for this as a brave character piece or if she thought this looked good. Certainly the hair and outfits in several scenes are similar to what she wears on the red carpet.

by Anonymousreply 56December 29, 2024 9:58 PM

She had all those movies and series in 2024 that r7 mentioned AND for some reason has a supporting role in the Paramount + series, Lioness, from the dude who created Yellowstone. She comes off really bizarre in it, and it’s not much of a role—any actress in her age group could play it.

Doesn’t she ever stay home?

by Anonymousreply 57December 29, 2024 11:40 PM

She was glamorous as a young woman but now she needs to take a break.

by Anonymousreply 58December 29, 2024 11:52 PM

She had glorious red hair and then she dyed it blonde. Mistake.

by Anonymousreply 59December 29, 2024 11:59 PM

She swore off botox in 2013...

“To be honest, I am completely natural. I have nothing in my face or anything,” she told Italian newspaper La Repubblica in 2013. “No surgery for me; I did try Botox, unfortunately, but I got out of it and now I can finally move my face again … I wear sunscreen, I don’t smoke, and I take care of myself, and I am proud to say that.”

by Anonymousreply 60December 29, 2024 11:59 PM

by Anonymousreply 61December 30, 2024 12:01 AM

That's a load of shit, r60. If anyone believes that, I have some oceanfront property to sell them in Arizona.

by Anonymousreply 62December 30, 2024 12:02 AM

I didn't believe her then, and I'm sure she wouldn't make that claim again today.

How are her eyes moving even closer to the center of her face? Does she have so much filler that her face got bigger around them?

by Anonymousreply 69December 30, 2024 2:04 AM

She looks crazy in a lot of photos.

R38, what makes it a good movie? No, I don't watch mainstream slop catering to the youthful demographic.

by Anonymousreply 70December 30, 2024 2:36 AM

She doesn't need the money, the public doesn't like her, she should take it easy and enjoy her wealth. I'd be happy to receive a handout if she doesn't know what else to do with her money.

by Anonymousreply 75December 30, 2024 11:19 AM

You can’t blame Nicole for looking the way she does. It’s not like her husband is doing anything to convince her she’s fine the way she is…when he’s been nipped and tucked just as much as she is.

by Anonymousreply 76December 30, 2024 2:12 PM

She looked just right for this role.

by Anonymousreply 77December 30, 2024 6:01 PM

R86, between their surgeries and their hairstyles, WTF is wrong with the mirrors in their homes?

by Anonymousreply 78December 31, 2024 9:38 AM

I thought it was a little boring.

Although I was amused at the idea that a revival of Hedda Gabler could fill a 3300 seat theater. (United Palace subbing for a Broadway house.)

by Anonymousreply 79January 1, 2025 2:36 PM

The bitch looks good, she's a good actress (bullshit to say she's wooden. Icy in a good way when she wants to be but she's certainly, certainly more than that), women like her, she's frau bait. Men still want to fuck her. You all are jealous f'ing haters and so cruel.

by Anonymousreply 80January 4, 2025 3:44 AM

Does she show her tits or snatch in this one?

by Anonymousreply 81January 4, 2025 3:50 AM

I went and saw it this evening. I had been on the fence about going to see it despite liking Kidman and thinking the trailer was solid. I was the only one in the theater. It was good, but it wasn't great. I don't think a theater watch is necessary to be honest. The performances are uniformly solid (Kidman always delivers for me) and I liked the cinematography and thought the score was interesting (and sometimes ominous), but... the story frankly wasn't particularly engrossing and didn't go anywhere particularly interesting.

To me it felt like a much less transgressive take on "The Piano Teacher", which is a truly gut-wrenching, disturbing, and erotic film. I didn't feel once that "Babygirl" reached any particular emotional heights or depths. I guess all of these basic fraus online saying that they were soaking their theater seats have very low thresholds.

by Anonymousreply 82January 4, 2025 5:15 AM

I told you it was a little dull...

by Anonymousreply 83January 4, 2025 5:34 AM

>>You all are jealous f'ing haters and so cruel.

I object to the use of the word jealous. The rest of that one sentence applies to me, though. WTF wants to be famous, with a partner wearing a Karen haircut/wig and fucking lifts? They're both a joke.

Not me, bitch.

Men still want to fuck her? Straight guys in their 90s?

Grow up and get over yourself, fangurl.

by Anonymousreply 87January 5, 2025 4:59 AM

That’s one thing that I liked: that she is not wearing a bra or T shirt in the fuck scenes like they are in most US movies or TV shows.

by Anonymousreply 88January 6, 2025 3:13 AM

Nicole Kidman's ENTIRE career are movies nobody pays to see, all bombs.

Matt Dillon had a similar career, but not as bad as Nicole's and he was put out to pasture years ago!

by Anonymousreply 89January 6, 2025 4:47 AM

Whatever flops she may have just remember that Nicole gets to go home every night to her uber studly, hyper hetero, masculine, super sexy rugged Aussie husband!

by Anonymousreply 90January 6, 2025 4:50 AM

She was topless, r88?

by Anonymousreply 91January 6, 2025 7:29 AM

Yes but it was photographed such that you could not see her nipples.

by Anonymousreply 92January 6, 2025 7:49 AM

R2, the last role I saw NK in she was a walking department store mannequin imploring people to return to AMC theaters.

by Anonymousreply 93January 6, 2025 7:52 AM
