I saw her onstage in The Blue Room back in 1998 and she was fantastic. She's an excellent stage actress and I wish she had done more theatre.

This was only released in movie theaters in hopes that Nicole would receive an Oscar nomination. Now that seems unlikely so it was another waste of people’s time.

It's a niche film. It was likely never expected to do major numbers at the box office.

The rest is pretty forgettable. Far and Away was a visually beautiful film, but I don't know if I recall her acting job being outstanding.

The only two Nicole movies I can watch are "The Others" and "Far and Away."

r15 here. I had forgotten Moulin Rouge, which I loved and is one of the few movies I own. I haven't watched it in about 4 years though, so it wasn't top of mind for me.

But I agree she was great in it, and she had terrific chemistry with Ewan. I can totally believe they hooked up/had an affair on set (and perhaps after). I think I heard that this was a big impetus behind Tammy and Nicole's divorce.

I don’t think a $7M opening week domestically for this film is a bomb. I don’t think it’s going to be some big hit but it might do $30M worldwide and will have a life on streaming. It does have a GG nomination. But I don’t think she’ll get an Oscar nomination. The film is too tawdry and her performance isn’t in service to anything. For a film about female sexuality, it really treats her character as more of a “disease of the week” heroine, someone in search of a cure for what ails her. I found that really off-putting. The film treats her like a freak. And I’ll never get passed the idea that a woman married to Antonio Banderas has never had an orgasm with him. That’s just ludicrous.

She gets work because she will work for less and take a producer credit. She’s also a champion for women directors, although the product is often mediocre. I think her TV shows are seen as ratings drivers due to her female fan base. People know a Nicole Kidman miniseries will be a campy and mildly pleasant affair. But this movie will not last.

Nicole is having one giant mid-life crisis. I remember the 2022 Vanity Fair cover where she's half-dressed like a teenager. So many of these 50 something actresses are intent on showing their skinny bodies and obvious plastic surgery reconfigurations at every turn. Babygirl is a hard pass.

I read somewhere that she is intentionally doing all this work to promote female directors/writers/producers, etc. Because she knows she can get a project greenlit, she puts her name and self in women-created projects that might not otherwise see the light of day.

Kidman is 60 years old and is as grimly determined to be and remain a star as Joan Crawford ever was. This determination is expressed through a refusal to sit still, endless publicity and a cold, flat expression in their eyes. While JC made dozens of entertaining film that are still worth watching even now, Kidman doesn't!

I saw it. It was easily the most tedious movie I have seen in years. I couldn’t walk out since I was watching it with friends. Everything was unbelievable starting with that stupid dog rescue scene that introduces her lover. The necktie sniffing? The pools scenes in December? The ice packs? And please spare me another rendition of Mozarts Requiem in a movie. Only positive side, Antonio Banderas is an extremely hot daddy.

Im not interested r54, I was interested in THE SUBSTANCE and I have seen it and was not disappointed.

The trailer for “Babygirl” made me intrigued because it seemed there was something of a minor comic undertow at play. Having seen it, there isn’t. It’s all sincere.

Also, the appearance of Kidman’s face at this point after decades of plastic surgery is kind of horrifying. I kept thinking how close it is in this movie to Baby Jane Hudson- the bright pink rouge, overdone brows, and clumpy mascara. I couldn’t decide if she was intentionally going for this as a brave character piece or if she thought this looked good. Certainly the hair and outfits in several scenes are similar to what she wears on the red carpet.

She had all those movies and series in 2024 that r7 mentioned AND for some reason has a supporting role in the Paramount + series, Lioness, from the dude who created Yellowstone. She comes off really bizarre in it, and it’s not much of a role—any actress in her age group could play it.

I went and saw it this evening. I had been on the fence about going to see it despite liking Kidman and thinking the trailer was solid. I was the only one in the theater. It was good, but it wasn't great. I don't think a theater watch is necessary to be honest. The performances are uniformly solid (Kidman always delivers for me) and I liked the cinematography and thought the score was interesting (and sometimes ominous), but... the story frankly wasn't particularly engrossing and didn't go anywhere particularly interesting.

To me it felt like a much less transgressive take on "The Piano Teacher", which is a truly gut-wrenching, disturbing, and erotic film. I didn't feel once that "Babygirl" reached any particular emotional heights or depths. I guess all of these basic fraus online saying that they were soaking their theater seats have very low thresholds.
