Cosby Show actor struggling financially after he quit job at Trader Joe's due to invasion of privacy

“Cosby Show” actor Geoffrey Owens said he’s still struggling to make ends meet after he was forced to quit his job at a Trader Joe’s grocery store amid an “attack on my privacy”

Owens, known for his role as Elvin Tibideaux on the six-time Emmy-winning series, claimed he’s “not much better off” today than he was when a customer snapped a photo of the actor working behind the grocery store register in 2018.

“Even today, right now, as we speak, I still struggle to make a living,” Owens told Atlanta’s V-103 radio station on Dec. 18. “I struggle every day to make my ends meet. And people can’t get their heads around that because they see me in movies.

Owens’ residual checks “were never particularly wonderful” because he only acted in “maybe 20% of shows” on the hit series.

“People have a false impression of what the average middle-class actor makes and their ability to make a living in the industry,” Owens said.

The Yale University graduate and son of former New York congressman Major Owens took a “regular” job and went mostly unnoticed until he was photographed working at Trader Joe’s.

“At first, there was some negative stuff about basically the job shaming. A ‘where is he now’ kinda thing,” Owens told V-103. “But then, very soon after that, there was all this support and encouragement from all over the world.”

Owens was worried about his invasion of privacy, so he left the job before this new gig went public.

“It was strange because someone had been in the store taking pictures,” Owens recalled. And I was like, now that this is breaking I’m not going to feel comfortable working in this store wondering who is around with a camera. It would just be too weird. I’m a very private person.

“It wasn’t like I quit knowing I would be making a lot of money soon or anything. I just felt like I wasn’t going to be able to handle that kind of scrutiny and attack on my privacy.”

When the news broke, an outpouring of support came his way.

Nicki Minaj sent him $25,000 but Owens donated the money to a charity because it “didn’t feel right to keep it” without working for it.

But he gladly accepted work in dozens of projects including acting gigs with powerhouses like Tyler Perry on the show “The Haves and the Have Nots” and the 50-Cent produced show “Power” and “Power Book II: Ghost.”

Owens currently stars on the CBS sitcom “Poppa’s House,” starring Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.

The actor admitted that after the headlines calmed down, he went back to Trader Joe’s while acting and asked for more hours because money was — and is — still tight.

Get in another line of work. He has a master’s degree and Trader Joe’s is all he can get?

by Anonymousreply 1December 28, 2024 4:44 AM

[quote] Tibideaux

Really?

by Anonymousreply 2December 28, 2024 4:45 AM

Couldn’t Crosby pay his actors more?

by Anonymousreply 3December 28, 2024 4:48 AM

He’s worked almost non stop since he was photographed working at Trader Joe’s. He’s a solid character actor and it doesn’t look like his work is slowing down. I mean he’s not making millions of dollars each year but it looks like he’s making a good living and is a regular on a series right now.

by Anonymousreply 4December 28, 2024 4:52 AM

Maybe he can step in for Audra in 'Gypsy' while she's out sick ?

by Anonymousreply 5December 28, 2024 4:52 AM

He should start as the lead character in a remake of The Cosby Show.

That would be fun!

by Anonymousreply 6December 28, 2024 4:58 AM

Yes it ended up SO great the last time, r6

by Anonymousreply 7December 28, 2024 5:16 AM

No Huxtable will ever work behind a grocery counter. You saw what happened to that grounds keeper Vanessa dragged in.

by Anonymousreply 8December 28, 2024 5:25 AM

R1 He likes to act.

I know a porn star who works part time at a restaurant because it’s a backup plan job and has the flexibility in hours to travel last minute for studio shoots and etc.

You can’t get a job with a masters degree and then tell the office you need 4 weeks off from work to go film a movie or TV pilot.

by Anonymousreply 9December 28, 2024 5:53 AM

He couldn't get a job at another grocery store?

by Anonymousreply 10December 28, 2024 7:55 AM

Oh fuck off. He's got a f****** degree from yale if he can't f****** figure his life out no one needs to feel sorry for his stupid ass.

by Anonymousreply 11December 28, 2024 8:08 AM

He sounds like a whiner. I don't feel sorry for him at all.

by Anonymousreply 12December 28, 2024 8:10 AM

I feel sorry for you, you can't read.

He's not asking for sympathy or a handout.

by Anonymousreply 13December 28, 2024 8:58 AM

He was hilarious as the guy claiming to be Tiger Woods on Always Sunny

by Anonymousreply 14December 28, 2024 9:53 AM

R13 He's really not. Nor is he complaining. He's just being practical.

by Anonymousreply 15December 28, 2024 11:34 AM

Received $25k and gave it to charity? Receipts please, Grifter!

by Anonymousreply 16December 28, 2024 11:52 AM

[quote] He has a master’s degree and Trader Joe’s is all he can get?

You’re one heck of a dodo.

by Anonymousreply 17December 28, 2024 11:55 AM

If he received $25,000.00 from Nikki Monaj when he was struggling financially ,and gave it all the charity, then he's a damn fool.

Sorry, but I find his story suspicious.

by Anonymousreply 18December 28, 2024 12:03 PM

He has a M.A. in one of fine arts from Yale. Not computer science, etc. In the business world that gets you nowhere, especially when you are around 60. He’s not turning down lucrative corporate jobs.

by Anonymousreply 19December 28, 2024 12:11 PM

No one who gets a degree in the arts can expect to make a living. And yet, the world loves music, arts and entertainment. But only the suits make money from it

by Anonymousreply 20December 28, 2024 1:13 PM

Any DLer who is in the biz, please speculate approx yearly residuals Owens might have received before the show was pulled from syndiation.

he says he was in 20% of the episodes, right?

by Anonymousreply 21December 28, 2024 1:30 PM

Curious how the actors union is featured in any of this

by Anonymousreply 22December 28, 2024 1:57 PM

Tyler Perry will keep him working. He’s always got crappy movies on Netflix

by Anonymousreply 23December 29, 2024 12:57 AM

I think he's cute, myself, and I'm wondering if he's gay, since he clearly doesn't have a spouse to support him.

by Anonymousreply 24December 29, 2024 1:10 AM

He was my mom's favorite character on the Cosby Show. He was hilarious with a deadpan type of delivery. He was just as talented as any of the actors on Seinfeld.

by Anonymousreply 25December 29, 2024 1:15 AM

This whole story of his makes me suspicious.

by Anonymousreply 26December 29, 2024 1:18 AM

[quote]I'm wondering if he's gay, since he clearly doesn't have a spouse to support him.

He's married with an adult son who followed him into acting. Here they are together at the premiere of "Uncoupled," the Neil Patrick Harris flop in which the son appeared.

Career highs and lows, many actors (but not all) experience this.

Isn't Fay Dunaway, who is more than an actor, she's an icon, now broke? Fay cannot get a job as a cashier in Trader Joe's!

I don't understand why someone getting a job when times are lean is a source of schadenfreude.

Maybe Mr. Owen should start grifting like everyone else who's "figured this out"!

Bitcoin? Become a minister?

by Anonymousreply 28December 29, 2024 1:25 AM

Wow, R27.

His son is cute!

by Anonymousreply 29December 29, 2024 2:09 AM

Jordyn is better than cute.

He's downright HOT!

Why doesn't he have a Hollywood career??

Tyler Perry needs to cast him.... STAT!!

Is The Cosby Show even syndicated or streaming anywhere now?

It seems like it got memory holed after the rape trial.

by Anonymousreply 31December 29, 2024 2:20 AM

Yeah, I bet whatever residuals he got annual from the Cosby Show reruns have all but dried up now.

by Anonymousreply 32December 29, 2024 2:21 AM

Thanks a lot, R27.

Now you have FORCED me to follow another hot Instagram stud.

I never would have guessed that "Elvin's" son would ever be so hot.

Jordyn played college basketball for UMass.

Cosby Show isn't streaming much, if at all, right? So even his low residuals aren't being earned.

It's really unfortunate, and he seems like a good guy. He nicely explains the reality of many actors - that just because you're on TV and in films doesn't mean a lifetime of riches. He's older so a career change may be difficult. Not sure why he didn't transition into something else sooner.

by Anonymousreply 35December 29, 2024 3:49 AM

^^I guess he IS still acting and therefore needs a flexible job.

by Anonymousreply 36December 29, 2024 3:56 AM

His son is like male model hot - which isn't always for everyone. Sort of an out-of-the-norm, not every day hot. In this case, I'll take it.

by Anonymousreply 37December 29, 2024 3:57 AM

Two words for you, Geoff: Only Fans.

by Anonymousreply 38December 29, 2024 3:57 AM

These actors planned on residuals from starring on the Cosby Show an iconically successful sitcom. Only to have Dr. Bill Cosby locked away for drug raping dozens. The reruns mostly shelved. Little to no residuals. Now bagging gnocchi and peppermint bark at TJs. Life will kick you in the nuts sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 39December 29, 2024 4:06 AM

I actually really like son of the son's art.

by Anonymousreply 40December 29, 2024 4:08 AM

The son looks like the could be a Bonet-Kravitz kid. Can't you see him as Zoe's brother. Geoffrey was pretty cute when he was young, but not hot like that. I wonder what Jordan's mom looks like.

by Anonymousreply 42December 29, 2024 4:15 AM

This is his mom, R42.

by Anonymousreply 45December 29, 2024 4:20 AM

His mom is white and japanese, R42.

So Jordyn is black, white, and japanese.

Nice mix.

I think the Cosby show runs on tv one but that might be about it. Even before everything came crashing down on Cosby I never saw the show much in syndication like the Golden Girls, Cheers, or Roseanne have been. Murphy Brown is similar in that it didn’t translate into syndication and is dated.

by Anonymousreply 48December 29, 2024 4:26 AM

I presume The Cosby Show was mostly syndicated on BET.

by Anonymousreply 49December 29, 2024 5:20 AM

^^You'd be horribly wrong.

by Anonymousreply 50December 29, 2024 5:33 AM

Geoffrey Owens is also a member of a church based in NYC that believes that Jesus Christ was a “fisher of men”, and so the members of his sect (that’s the best way I can describe it) constantly try to recruit people by inviting them to Shakespeare readings, monologue work sessions, game nights, makeup parties for the ladies, and other seemingly benign social events where then the guests are encouraged to go recruit more members. My friend left before she learned what the endgame was, but she was truly creeped out. Their minions usually strike up a conversation offhandedly at an open call, at an opening night party, or in line at the Equity Building. I also did a Bway show with a woman musical director who was a member. We finally banded together and said, “Please, NO.”

They never mentioned money, but they were obsessed with “building their numbers”.

It all started when Geoffrey saw me glancing at sides on the subway twenty-two years ago, pegged me for an actor and asked me to come and do a soliloquy at a gathering the next night.

Meanwhile, I was just trying to subtly memorize unpronounceable words for a pharmaceutical commercial, and he wants me to do Shakespeare. 🙄

Nice guy, though, and very handsome back then. Not too hard a sell, but pretty assertive. I’ve fended off much more aggressive types in my time, so I basically just told him to go away.

That’s my brush with him.

PS: I thought he was a definite asset to The Cosby Show. He’s a charmer, no doubt. But I guess so was Bill.

by Anonymousreply 51December 29, 2024 10:04 AM

r51 is it possible he was just trying to build community?

I'm not sure, but what about that seems like a cult? It kind of sounds like something where a person thought maybe a similar person might want to join something that had common interests...

I don't know, just thinking you might have seemed like someone he felt might find interests in whatever community he's a part of.

by Anonymousreply 52December 29, 2024 10:10 AM

[Quote]So Jordyn is black, white, and japanese.

What colour does that make him?

Interesting comment from the video at R54:

[quote] @zgord-nb1zi

[quote] I lived in Hollywood for 4 years. Worked in the entertainment biz in a support capacity for entertainers seeking side hustles in between jobs. I hung out with some famous people and i can tell you that only 1% of the actors, musicians, models are working consistently. Its really kind of sad. If i told you the names of famous people i hired for part time gigs you would be shocked. Mr Owens experience is the norm rather the exception.

by Anonymousreply 55December 29, 2024 1:06 PM

R55 that is my experience and observation as a window licker, most actors do not work as actors and struggle with money.

by Anonymousreply 56December 29, 2024 1:11 PM

He hasn't done a Law & Order franchise since 2002. Did he not bag Dick Wolf's groceries well?
