The last time I saw a mass public embrace of bigotry against a foreign ethnic group it was because some of them flew some airplanes into lower Manhattan.
All it took for it to happen this time was for Vivek Ramaswamy to run his mouth off.

Dogs. Fleas, Vivek. Dogs, fleas.
I still find it utterly delusional of people like Ramaswamy who think they're somehow exempt or will be embraced by people whose entire identity and world view is white superiority.
He's the classic insecure person who covers with bluster and arrogance, but secretly (or not so secretly) desperately wants the approval and validation from the people to whom he feels inferior.

I used to work for a small consulting company. The two principals were real road warriors, and would happily get on a plane and go anywhere in the world to drum up new business.
They never complained about any place they went until they both went to Mumbai, India. They called every day with stories of the disgusting things they were seeing, smelling, experiencing on a daily basis, including seeing rats the size of small dogs. And they both absolutely refused any food or drink outside of the American brand hotel where they stayed.

This isn't fair, I admit, but anyone who has worked with Indian customers in a retail setting probably harbors some animosity toward Indians as a group. They are the most difficult customers to please, and they lie constantly and run retail scams. I'd rather watch thieves just walk out of the store with unpaid merchandise than deal with Indians who lied to my face and pocketed money by returning "free after rebate" merchandise.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 28, 2024 3:01 PM |
From explanations I've read, it's that many Indians only respect those who have money. Service workers are seen as below them - the unskilled workers of the lowest caste.
Of course having a caste system supports these ideas. And before anyone says that the caste system was abolished - it's still fucking there and in the mindsets.
It's 50/50 with me - I've met so many wonderful Indian-Americans, but direct Indians has been a very mixed bag.

If they are so smart why didn't they fix their own country?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 28, 2024 3:30 PM |
That’s true, R36. An Indian coworker explained just that to me. Apparently, it’s also a badge of honor amongst Indian families to have children living and working in places like the US. There’s an assumption that you’re rich. The same coworker said her brother, who’s still in India, assumed she owned her home and didn’t have a mortgage because she has such a high paying job. When in reality her job is around $100k and she’s knee deep in debt like the rest of us.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 28, 2024 3:32 PM |
R37 - they're too busy blaming British colonialism. Reality is - they maintained the Indian princely states and paid so much of the national economy to these princes, that they couldn't move forward. They finally stopped that around 1970.
One major issue is over population - nobody is advocating the one-child policy of China - but it did have some benefits. Who knows what China would be like without that policy and hundreds of millions more people?
Another is literacy. It's a massive country - but they could do it. But they have the caste system and a lot of corruption.
How do you get people to care for each other when it's built-into society that a large percentage of people are lower caste and BELONG there?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 28, 2024 3:38 PM |

No wonder white trash is feeling threatened.

Can’t believe I am saying this but MAGA is not 100% wrong on their side of the H-1B visa program debate, and about Indians specifically.
The program is MASSIVELY abused. Under-experienced Indians are brought over here as alleged needed specialists. In reality they did some quick-ass certification work but do not actually know how to do the job. Their code is bug-ridden. They get paid a fraction of what an experienced programmer would get paid. They often get terminated when the shit-quality deadline driven project is met.
Experienced and highly competent programmers are made, not born, and it takes more educational investment than the tech sector is apparently willing to invest.

Property values are way down in areas they have flooded. Take Brampton for instance, a city in Canada where homes are worth at least 25% less than the rest of the greater city area. When you get them in large numbers, they also do other shit, like import their third. world grudges and conflicts too, as we've seen here on several occasions. I'm sure cities in the UK are largely the same.

R30 before I retired, I worked for 30+ years for an international, nonprofit health organization e.g. International Red Cross. I've been to every place you could imagine in Asia, Africa and Latin America. From my experience and perspective, you are wrong. Sao Paulo and Nairobi are much, much better places than Mumbai. While each has their slums/favelas, etc, Mumbai has no redeeming neighborhoods. The wealthy live inside walled compounds surrounded on all sides by filth. I did meet and work with some wonderful Indian staff, but most had left India for other countries. The filth permeated every corner of the city, and the overpopulation only increased the problem. Add the heat and humidity (India was the hottest country I ever visited - hotter than some Saharan Africa countries), and the environment was simply unbearable.

The truth is White Americans hate brown people. Because they’re lazy as shit, Whites take the most coveted jobs and leave the rest of the work for whomever will do it.
Since Whites have worked hard to exclude Blacks from education, they have to rely on foreign workers to fill spots—Indian docs and tech workers, Filipino nurses, Chinese mathematicians, and on and on.
America has the world greatest economy precisely because of its immigrants, not because of its native populations.
It’s laughable that America would hope to compete in the modern world without Indian and other such foreign labor,

R114, most Indians I know are liberal — to an extent.
But they come from a caste system so when they see poor people behaving as poor people will sometimes do, they may just see loathsome lower caste behavior, not the result of poverty and a lack of education or opportunity.
The ability to see unlimited potential in every person is *supposed* to be a hallmark of America. We certainly see it more than is seen in southwest Asia, but we are creeping closer and closer to that social stratification.

Canada already hates Indians. It's just what happens when a minority ethnic group rises in visibility.
The problem with Indians is that they think they are right just because and deserve to be treated. Blacks, Latinos, and Asians in large part acknowledge that some of the prejudice against them is based on some universal experience that unfortunately is identified with their group.
Indians think their sh*t don't stink... which we all know isn't true. The Indian troll here is a prime example of that.

Some, not a lot. Indians may think they are a lot, but they are rare. Leadership also goes beyond CEOs, who are effectively unicorns and have demonstrated the ability to be a true leader. Your typical Indian HIB is a worker be who follows orders and works twice as hard and long to get promoted to senior slave professional labor positions. They are good and being told what to do and kissing ass.
Most self-respecting American workers would rather not be wealthy if being a slave for someone like Musk is what it takes. Or they start their own ventures. Again, not something an HIB will do.

I’ve had good luck with Air BnBs. Until I stayed in one in a major Australian city. It was in a 2 year old apartment building that had for tenants many freshly arrived Indian migrants* .
Guys, they treated that place like a dump. Cigarette butts, used tissues and crushed up pieces of paper thrown off balconies. Bags of trash left in the carpeted corridors outside their front doors. Someone’s cat darted out of their flat and was pawing through someone else’s garbage. When rubbish was taken to the chute on that floor it was frequently unbagged. I saw a woman emptying a pot on uneaten food directly into it, smearing sauce on the interior of the chute.
This was in spite of signage everywhere instructing tenants on the regulations on the building.
*I hasten to add that these were not regular folks of Indian descent who had been the in country for some time and figured out the local customs.

No, they were middle-class. Typically mostly educated Indians (and their spouses etc) get visas here.
My assumption is the city they are from in India didn’t have regular garbage collection so they just did the same in Australia.
Another thing is they talked down to the building manager and security guards as if they were servants, which in Australia is a huge faux pas.

India is home to a very ancient and rich culture. Outstanding art and architecture, amazing music, incredible dance. Literature, poetry, and philosophy have been highly developed for at least a couple of millenia. They are not wrong to consider many other cultures to be upstarts in comparison. The caste system was and is a huge negative. British colonization of and domination of India was a bad and brutal thing, and brought many evils to the culture which didn't exist before, such as institutionalized homophobia, besides impoverishing a country which in the 16th century was probably the richest in the world. However, the preexisting caste system guaranteed that wealth was highly concentrated in the hands of a few. Now there is a rush to create a thriving middle class. For many, this means embracing the worst characteristics of capitalism, including making the acquisition of money and material possessions the most important goal in life.
Percentage-wise, there are just as many intelligent Americans as there are Indians. But, if 34 million Americans are intelligent and well-educated (1/10th of the population), the equivalent in India would be 150,000,000 well-educated and intelligent people. There are also many more unintelligent and poorly educated people there (by the numbers).
It's not really a surprise that ambitious Indian people are trying hard to get work in the US, where money and opportunity are easier to obtain. But it is likely that in the next 30 years, India will surpass the US in GDP, (as will China).
I don't like the language that people like Vivek and Elon are using to promote the idea of Indian intellectual superiority - but I also think that, at this snapshot in time, there are more trained engineers and internet technology people in India than in the US, so they could potentially fill the void in those rapidly expanding fields. By handling this situation so poorly, and using such stupid language. Vivek and Elon have almost guaranteed that there will be an ugly backlash against any Indian workers hired in the US over the next several years.

Maybe those brilliant Indian minds can work on their country's needs, not America's, emphasis on: sewerage and plumbing; water and air pollution; roads and transportation in general; like, a combined Eisenhower-Biden approach to civil improvement.
Slight digression: A couple movies aside, Americans in general are not about to embrace a culture of "Bollywood" films and multiple gods from a land with a history to which we cannot relate and don't learn about in school. We are not the UK. We put up with Indian-based (and Filipino) "Customer Service" because we have no choice.
I say this as one who collects Moghul-style art and thinks the Taj Mahal is the world's most beautiful work of architecture, with a rival only in Notre Dame de Paris pre-fire.

r171 my university recently added "caste" as a protected class (eg, they cannot discriminate on the basis of gender, gender expression/identity, race, class, veteran status, sexual orientation, pregnancy, caste, etc).
It seemed odd to me in a sense. It's almost like imposing American values of equality onto a culture that is inherently unequal. (I know that American society is also inherently unequal; but the same people pushing for the inclusion of "caste" on the list would turn around and condemn "white feminists" for pointing out that the hijab is sexist.)
It was either John Rawls or Ronald Dworkin who wrote about the tensions that arise when a tolerant society accommodates subsets of that society that are intolerant.

Sorry, but it is not a lack of skilled workers. It is two things Cheaper labor and indentured servitude. When you get someone on an H1b visa, they cannot leave the company. They are stuck at least paid less for three years than their American co-workers. I used to work at a very large networking company that offshored almost its entire support because it was cheaper. Suddenly their code was showing up in Chinese routers, their customer satisfaction was in the toilet and their stock took a hit, Companies could have US based support, they just don't want to have to pay a fair wage, 401k, health insurance etc to them.

I work in Edison NJ where the Indian population has absolutely exploded in the past 25 years. From like 10% of the population to 50% of the population. BOOM. This is most extreme in Edison and neighboring Iselin.
It does feel strange to walk around these towns and see a suburban town structurally "New Jersey American" but actually embodied by people who moved here from India, within one generation mostly. I work in an office building there, and the adjoining 6 story building has a bunch of tech and related companies with 100% Indians as the employees. Literally 100%. You see them all at lunch in that building's office cafe and dining court between noon and 2pm. It would defy logic to believe that these companies tried in good faith to find American workers and couldn't find one single American worker. They clearly hire their own, only their own, and don't give a shit about diversity. No blacks. No hispanics. And.. no whites. To whatever extent NJ law forbids this, these all-Indian pop up tech firms seem to be flouting it with impunity.

My experience with an Indian landlord. We lived in the rental home for 16 years. Her husband is a physician. Shortly after we moved in, the wife was using our address to get her children into the local elementary school. We also had a son who was attending the local elementary school.
For 16 years, no maintenance. When we moved in the carpet was older. Never replaced it or painted. The oven died soon after we moved in. The wife bought the cheapest Hot Point range and came to observe the handymen replace it.
During the very last part of the pandemic, the hot water pipes under the house broke apart and flooded. Water coming up under the carpet. I provided her with a copy of my normal water bill and informed her that I would not be paying the excess. She said she would think about it. I advised her we did not request a hotel during the two weeks we had no water. (Our gym was close by - to shower.) Plumbers found other things and said our toilet was 60 years old. Plumber told me she said we (renters) hardly ever used the hall bathroom so they didn’t need to replace it. (The other bathroom was off the master bedroom.) Plumber (rolled his eyes) couldn’t find replacement parts to fix it. Landlady drives up a day or two later with the cheapest toilet in her van and proceeds to watch the plumbers replace it.
After all the repairs of the pipes, they said they wanted to put the house up for sale, as is, and offered it to us first. They were surprised when we declined.
They later sold it, as is, to their realtor friend for $40,000 less than what they offered us because no one would buy it. The realtor put about $50,000 in it. They painted, replaced the oven, dishwasher, carpet and other flooring, new countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms, new bathroom cabinets, they covered a wall leak in the bathroom with another cabinet.

I live near RTP in North Carolina my community is now majority, or nearly so, Indian. We bought our home and the surrounding wooded acreage over 25 years ago when it was one of five homes on a dead end, dirt road. We are now the last undeveloped property surrounded by subdivisions made up of tightly packed McMansions which are lived in almost exclusively by Indians.
Seeing the development starting 20 years ago, we built a chain link fence at the property line around about thirty of our acres. Most of this fence abuts HOA owned tree buffers at the back of these homes’ backyards.
The past ten years have been nothing but constant problems with trash of all kinds being thrown over the fence onto our property. Yard waste, construction waste, food waste, cardboard, broken toys and appliances, basically anything you can pick up and lob over a fence it’s been thrown. I’ve contacted the HOAs, the individual home owners, the town code enforcement people, and nothing has helped. After getting no help or relief, I just started throwing it back over on their side until they realize I’m not going to put up with it. That solves the problem with that house but there are always people moving in and out and it always starts up again.
The other main problem I have is their judgmental attitude. I am highly educated and because of luck and hard work, very wealthy. My property, because of the development potential, is worth over $15 million alone. Though I have wealth, I don’t dress like a wealthy person. On my best days, I look like a country boy come to town and most would take me for a farmer or a blue collar worker. When I’m sitting at a bar, or doing shopping in the neighborhood, they look at and treat me like the dirt on the bottom of their shoes and are not just dismissive but openly and unmistakably rude to the point of being offensive. That is until they find out that I’m as rich as Cresus and own the largest tract of undeveloped land in this part of the county, then they fall over themselves trying to ingratiate themselves with me. Needless to say, I’m not receptive to this flattery. Anyone who doesn’t have the common decency and curtesy to treat others, no matter how they appear, with kindness and respect are not people with which I want to deal.
Another, less common, but more dangerous problem is the fireworks. I grew up around rednecks and they love to set off fireworks but nothing like Indians do. Fireworks are legal in my state, but only if a certain power and size and these fireworks are absolutely not legal here. They choose to set them off in the dead end spur streets which end at my property line and there is a clear and obvious danger in sparks and fireworks landing in the woods on my side of the fence. I have to patrol these areas each and every Indian holiday and call the police to make them move on to their own streets in front of their own homes and not up against my property line on HOA owned space.
We recently passed a parks bond, of which the largest portion was used to build a cricket stadium for the Indian immigrants. I knew what the bong was going to be used for and supported it. This past election, we had another bond for parks and sidewalks and the Indian voting block organized against it, citing a desire to keep taxes as low as possible. The idea that you got what you wanted two years ago and now have no need for another bond to continue to improve public services is abhorrent to me and was the final straw and makes me wonder if the benefit of bringing all of these H1B visa workers here who don’t share our values and cultural norms isn’t outweighed by the negatives.
Businesses need workers, that I can believe, but the depressive effects on wages that recruiting foreign talent who willing to work for less doesn’t seem to be smart in the long term if it is also accompanied by a negative impact on quality of life and problems between neighbors.

There's a limit to how many foreigners people can take before they start feeling like they in another country, or people take over. People think that's xenophobic and racist, but British felt like that with the Poles who moved their for higher EU wages. Any culture around the world can feel this way. "Yankee go home."
When incoming people conglomerate so they don't feel out of place, people who have lived there feel threatened or out of place. We are a multicultural society but when thousands of people don't adopt those multicultural, diverse ideals and prefer to stick with only those they're familiar with, it doesn't make a nice society.

Everyone seems to be blurring the topic - H1B1 Visas, Indian-Americans immigrants, and jobs filled in rural areas of the country because there are so few doctors and professionals who stay there.
The issue is the Trump administration wants to crack down on illegals and immigrants taking jobs and housing, while hypocritically they want to protect H1B1 and H2 visas that allow them to exploit foreign resources and NOT hire or train Americans.
The H1 Visas do have a disproportionate amount of Indians because of their 'diploma/degree schools' that specifically train for a specific software and job. What most people on here who have worked in tech (myself included) have seen is that they are not 'stars' - they do the minimum and often they need to be trained on simple things because their learning isn't real world, but just a series of tech courses.
Over half the H1s I've worked with STAYED in America somehow. And they moved on to other American jobs with higher pay - and then they bring the rest of their family over. The establish residency and then get treated like a fast-tracked immigrant - it's not fair.
For anyone who says Indians are smarter and Americans don't have the brains or skill set to do this - 100% garbage. We don't have these specialized software courses - and many are very expensive.
As far as doctors coming from India and Asia to work in areas with a doctor shortage - I don't think anyone has a problem with that. That's not the issue.
The issue is the double-speaking from Elon and Trump and immigrants - but as long as they get to abuse THEIR immigrant employees.
It's a loop-hole that Indians have used - in the same way, the UK and Canada has the same issue with them coming to get 'degrees' on student VISAs for bogus schools. They're not actually attending a school or the school is an Indian-forrmed fake college or university as a scheme for immigration.
If you want to crack down to protect Americans - you've got to do it evenly.

When Musk talks trash about DEI and Trump talks about black jobs, what they are talking about is creating an American version of race based Dalit identity.

Not a brahmin hater (the caste system is bad, and many brahmins oppose it), but aren't they still the landlords in India, even with all of the new wealth accrued by lower castes? Yeah, more are sinking into the lower middle-class, but there's still a good amount of generational wealth.

R280, most beneficiaries of DEI are all upper middle-class---ethnic minorities, white women, and new immigrants. It's been applied to hire tons of Indians on H1B visas.
*None of it* has changed the fact that black people in the US are still overwhelmingly poor---OR that there's a growing poor white underclass. On the contrary, it has been invoked as some kind of panacea during a time of rising inequality and decreased social mobility. It's a distraction that does nothing to alter our current course towards a kind of techfeudalism.

R259, r256 here. I'm Pennsylvania born and bred. I have never heard of any "Franco-American clubs," let alone seen any of their habitues. Moreover, the term "Franco-American," by the usual connotation and even denotation, refers most likely to later generations, much like my saying I'm Sicilian-American harkens to my great-grandfather from Palermo, not to myself as the new immigrant.
So unless you are also r244, I'll wait for his response.
But more to my previous point, and to reiterate: 1.) Where did r244, and SPECIFICALLY R244, run into French immigrants? And 2.) What was "pushy" about them?

"American trained doctors can’t work in poor areas because they wouldn’t be able to pay off their student loans. If you score high enough med school in India is free. (The number of med school slots in US schools is restricted by regulation)"
There's a solution for both of those problems, lol. It's not novel. Other countries run into the same issue---countries with higher life expectancy and lower fertility rates. Regulations are changed to service industry development, as they should be. The question in a situation where there aren't enough doctors is which regulation should be overhauled? The ones related to visa caps or the ones that limit the number of med schools? The one tech capitalists would support, and the one most Americans would support are not the same.

R265, we don’t want to sell and move because it is our home, which we’ve spent 25 years building, landscaping, and making into exactly what we want in a farm and home. The fact that suburbia came and surrounded us is regrettable but not reason enough to pull up stakes and do it all over again, at least not yet. We’ve gotten offers, one five years ago we almost accepted until we started looking for another place and just couldn’t find anything that wouldn’t take a boatload of money and years to make into what we already have.

And yes, the Indians that are being brought in under this visa are idiots who do sub-optimal work. They are also extremely dishonest, extremely lazy, and they actively work to sabotage women and blacks in the workplace.
Fuck them. This is high paying work that can and should be done by Americans, because Americans have a stronger work ethic and will do a better job.
by Anonymous | reply 296 | December 30, 2024 5:44 PM |
Two things, one internal one external.
The first is I.Q. versus E.Q. They are randomly distributed, like other traits. Some people have intellectual prowess; others have emotional sensing prowess; a few have both and a few have neither.
High E.Q. enables one to “read the room” and act accordingly. People with high IQ may be clueless socially (think Musk-like nerds). People with high EQ may be popular even if only of average intelligence (think your typical politician).
The second thing is culture versus rules. Culture, because it is typically ingrained from a young age, usually triumphs rules. The U.S. has had anti-discrimination rules for decades, but early-learned cultural prejudice is hard to overcome.
Unless they happen to have a high EQ, immigrants carry the cultural norms of their prior lives into their new environments. It’s no different than so-called “trash” in the U.S. who strike it rich; move upscale; and think nothing of leaving cars parked on the front yard of their new middle-class surroundings. It doesn’t “feel” out of place to them.
Doesn’t matter how book smart they are. Without an EQ sensitive family member’s help; someone from outside is going to have to explain to them what is and isn’t done in their new world if they are going to fit in.

One of the biggest (by far, not even close) determinants of a child's educational success is parent involvement and prioritizing education. There are good students at every 'urban' high school that go on to good schools and make it out.
The problem is the others who want to fuck around and don't take school seriously and their parents don't engage and enforce learning at home. That goes for ALL races - but it's a particular problem with black and Latino communities. They also make the learning atmosphere more difficult for everyone else there.

Anyone who has been to your home regions knows that "my shit doesn't stink" is a lie, that marigolds do not eliminate the need for cleaning and deodorizing one's pits and holes, and that populating the medical professions has not improved care, patient communication, service, and satisfaction.

H1B salaries are NOT the same - here's what happens. The company posts a job with outlandish experience and tech requirements at a low wage. It then says after several months - we can't find anyone to fill this position.
They prove their case to the federal government who then allows you to hire H1B. The Department of Labor will use their outdated method of determining a position's salary for that region (often taken from federal govt salary positions which pay much less but have a lot more benefits and pensions).
Then that is the salary. On paper it looks like it's a salary that an American would make - but it's not. And sometimes the 'agency' that found that Indian worker will want its cut.
Here's the thing - do you think other countries - India or China - would allow the same thing to happen to get immigrant workers into the country? Hell no they wouldn't.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | December 31, 2024 3:05 AM |
Agreed with all the above except Singapore. It has come a long way but your pathway through the Singapore social system depends on whether you are considered Chinese, Malay or Indian (in descending order of the social hierarchy). I had a colleague who was hospitalised in Singapore and she spent the first 24 hours on a trolley because they couldn't decide which race she would fit into. She is English and of Nigerian descent. That would decide which ward she was admitted to and who would treat her. She couldn't be considered an expat (another Singaporean classification) because she wasn't white. Eventually she was made an honorary Malay but it caused major gridlock for the hospital until then.
Singapore's extensive and quality public housing system where the vast majority live is to be admired unless you're a single Singaporean under 35 who doesn't want to keep sharing a bedroom with granny. Only once they've hit 35 do they qualify. Interesting social engineering.
Women from Indonesia and the Philippines are allowed to move there as maids, are paid a pittance and get one day off each week and only can stay while they have a job.
Men from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India work as virtual slave laborers on construction projects, surrendering their passports on arrival, working under dangerous conditions where bamboo scaffolding is the norm, live in temporary barracks with their workmates and are kicked out if they can't find a job.
Then there is Singapore's retention of the death penalty which doesn't really show that it is committed to human rights in my opinion, as I've said elsewhere.
Singapore is a shiny efficient air conditioned Disneyland with palm trees if you're a white expat or one of the Chinese majority - not so much if you're not.

Everything you needed to know about why the United States is the way it is today has been encapsulated into a single thread. I mean the vitriol, stereotypes and bigotry come out in other threads occasionally, but it usually isn't so blatant like this.
Now you've got people who have made some of the most outlandish remarks demanding others to prove that diverse, non-White countries exist in this World that are democracies and have good human rights records overall. They likely won't believe anything what you say, so it is a waste of time. You want that information, head over to the Freedom House website and read their 'Freedom in the World' reports for every country and most territories. They go into detail about respect for democratic norms and human rights and been publishing reports since the early 1970s.
Still don't understand what the hell does that have to do with anti-Indian sentiment among the American right over visas and immigration?
by Anonymous | reply 350 | December 31, 2024 5:00 AM |
I've also noticed the creeping racism on the DL R348 and R350. I've raised this elsewhere as becoming particularly prevalent since 5th November and had a number of people try to shut me down for daring to suggest such a thing.
I think that previously closeted MAGATs are more comfortable expressing their xenophobia and even more mainstream posters have shifted to the right - as if electing Trump made it all OK.
Then there's the increased sensitivity to anything other than slavish praise for the USA - any democracy should be strong enough to withstand some constructive criticism but lately on the DL people have flared up at some relatively innocuous comments, while continuing to post the most stupid and clueless content about other countries.
And now someone will chime in with "this is an American site - if you don't like it, leave". But I won't - there is much about the USA that I find interesting and it is still too globally influential -= for better or for worse - to be ignored.

Correct.
And R354 is an idiot.
The statistics are startling:
"The overall percentage of consanguineous marriages in India is between 11.9% and 14.4%. The highest prevalence is in the southern region of India, where consanguinity is more common among Hindus"
"In rural areas, 46.9% of marriages are consanguineous, compared to 29.1% in urban areas."
"In one study, the most common type of inbreeding was first cousin (FC) marriages, accounting for 53.89% of the total. The most common subtype of first-cousin marriage was the matrilateral cross (MC) type, accounting for 35.58%."
"Estimates suggest that 1–3 out of every 100 babies in India are born with birth defects, which is equivalent to 27 million babies each year."

R363 is just stating the obvious. Every possible permutation of white supremacy and anti-black/brown hate was exploited to get Trump re-elected -- "They're eating the dogs! They're eating the cats!" If our nation had a moral conscience it'd be hanging its head in shame. Instead we think it is appropriate to use "woke" as a pejorative and spread the myth that the .001732% of opportunities impacted by "DEI" has somehow disenfranchised the entire undereducated, underqualified, vastly entitled 'white' race. It is utterly disgraceful.

[quote]The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence and examine the determinants of consanguineous marriage types in India. Data for 456,646 ever-married women aged 15–49 years were analysed from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 conducted in 2015–16. The overall prevalence of consanguineous marriage was 9.9%; the South region (23%) and North-East region (3.1%) showed the highest and lowest prevalences, respectively. Muslims had a higher prevalence (15%) than Hindus (9%). The prevalence of first cousin marriage (8.7%) was more than that of second cousin (0.7%) and of uncle–niece marriages (0.6%). Women living in urban areas and in nuclear families, having a higher level of education and belonging to affluent families were less likely to marry their cousins (p < 0.01). Women living in the South region of the country were more likely to marry their cousins, as well as uncles (p < 0.001). Close scrutiny of the trends in the results (odds ratios) revealed no clear relationship between socioeconomic condition and consanguineous marriage. The study results suggest that religion and north–south regional dichotomy in culture largely determine consanguineous marriage rather than socioeconomic condition in India.

They will use items till they break and then walk in and return it, demanding a return. It does not matter what it is, clothes with shit stains, used up candles (Have a friend who is a DM for a big candle company that let's you return your candle for any reason. She says all they do is buy one burn it till it is done come in and say they don't like the smell to get a new one and do it over and over). r423 they are not coming to the US, they are brought here on visas. Cheap labor for tech companies and they are indentured. They cannot look for other jobs if they are worked like dogs or underpaid. Thier choices are do it or go back to India. There are some 14 million tech jobs that go unfilled everyday. The reason is the US won't pay to train people. You can hire a worker, train them in the tech and pay them market, with the risk they will get poached or leave the job because the employer is a dick..not with H1B visa folks. You don't have to train them, you can pay them a sub par wage and work them how you want because they have no choice. They think they are getting a lot of money (compared to what they would make in India) health insurance, vacation...things they don't get in India. Then after a year they start to realize their US co-workers make more and are treated differently. But what can they do? For the company they just have to get the h1b visa and sponsor the employee.

by Anonymous | reply 450 | January 1, 2025 3:52 PM |
Again, Americans want to live the easy life by not working too hard in school. That’s fine.
The problem is, if you’re going to rely on foreign workers to do your shit jobs, you can’t then hate on them too.
No American doctors want to work in the middle of fucking nowhere. Few American students want to study nonstop to become tech experts. All fine.
But claiming that the people who actually do put in the work are somehow inferior is what reveals the desperation of knowing it’s all your own fault.

They will tell you their parents say they have to study medicine, engineering, IT, etc. This is common knowledge. there are subreddits on reddit all about this talking about the severe parenting bordering on child abuse in those cultures.
My god, Reddit isn’t a place to fact check your views. Reddit has tons of threads on how to fuck animals. Should I assume that all Americans do is fuck goats?

But it is chauvinistic and laughable to claim superiority when on almost all metrics you are behind. Are you serious??
Also they are claiming superiority while begging to come to the USA. The entitlement and nerve of being in the USA, driving down wages, and shitting on the culture of your adopted country is gross.
American expats/immigrants are accused of not respecting the local culture to the point we are seen as "ugly Americans", but we are allowed to be talked down to by Indian immigrants.

[Quote] Talk to any Indian or Chinese child or the children of Indian or Chinese parents. They will tell you their parents say they have to study medicine, engineering, IT, etc.
You will see this in Indians and Chinese in America for very specific reasons. American immigration laws welcome highly educated people so many well-educated Indians and Chinese came over. Often that first generation pushes their kids to work for professions that will put them into the American middle class—doctor, engineer, lawyer. We see that pattern in many 1st generation families—African, middle eastern, also.
Unfortunately, much of that ends when the second generation parents the third generation

r451 A lot of American doctors would be open to living in the middle of nowhere if they were paid more. HB1 workers are desired not due to their superior skills, but because they are basically indentured servants. Their visa can be revoked easily by employers, so they have to do whatever their employer wants and can be paid below average wages.
by Anonymous | reply 457 | January 1, 2025 4:05 PM |
r456 There are endless articles that the vast majority of HB1 visas/visas in general are not due to not enough Americans being available. Either you are playing stupid or haven't bothered to read an article or two.

[Quote] You are missing the point. What is the point of claiming some intellectual superiority when your country is undeveloped??
Whether a country is developed depends more than just on intellectual ability. It depends on available resources and funding. It also depends on having to fight public health issues like overpopulation and infectious disease.
India and China had their heydays in the 16th century, when their economies were the best in the world. The west had a good 500 year run, but both these countries are coming back, particularly because they have large educated working classes,

Rural america doesn’t have a ton of money to pay anyone. They have to make do with what they have. I doubt even more pay would attract Americans because there are very few opportunities for a doctor’s family in rural areas. Indians are educated and willing to do these jobs. Why are MAGA and DL hating on them for doing jobs Americans refuse to do?
It’s not like if Indian disappeared, there would be a line of Americans waiting for those jobs. The very reason Indians are here in the first place is Americans won’t and can’t do those jobs

r431 because India is focused on it. You can get tech training on street kiosks in India. As another poster pointed out they are not smarter than anyone else they are just focused on these technologies and educating on it. Magats have long been pushing manual labor for people rather than college, become an HVAC tech or mechanic or plumbers. There are plenty of US based workers who could be trained in tech but there is no guarantee they will not leave for a better paying job. There is no risk with an H1B visa employee. You can train them up and not worry some other tech company is going to offer them a 20% pay increase to poach them. They have no bargaining power, they cannot negotiate for a pay raise, they get what they get.

R480 link please. About 19% of new businesses are started by immigrants. However a lot of those companies are just ways for them to exploit fellow immigrants.
Of course, people will want to throw in all of the tech companies who have 1 immigrant founder into the mix - when in reality, they were just one member and the company got off its feet with American venture capital funding.
The tired line of 'immigrants are great for the economy' needs to be shattered - because the economy has been tilted where only the upper 1% or 5% see any benefits from the last 30+ years. The rest of us do NOT see that lift - and usually that economic lift is enjoyed by the upper 1% by exploiting the resources and making it more difficult for Americans to get pay increases or to unionize for fair benefits and treatment.

R514 - exactly. This whole discussion has been conflated with a general discussion about immigration, which is a related but separate issue to the H1B1 or for Canada and UK, the 'student' visas which are being excessively abused.
We had extremely strict immigration laws from the 1920s through the late 1960s - and indeed, they were racist. But people also enjoyed one of the highest levels of living that we still look back in awe at.
Why? There were limited amount of workers so people had to be paid more - along with the obvious benefits of being the victors after WW2 and not having any destruction in our country.
Other countries have not had the huge population growth that we've had over the past 50 years. They've had to provide for their citizens and manage growth.
Plus there is nothing saying we have to keep growing our population in order to survive and thrive. We can pivot and do more for those who are here, instead of creating this artificially low and precarious standard of living to keep people exhausted but terrified to ask for anymore lest we lose our jobs and healthcare.
by Anonymous | reply 516 | January 1, 2025 6:04 PM |

We also taxes the rich at 95%. The post WW2 era was an economic boom not because we restricted immigrants but because our taxation was so high and that money was plowed right back into the economy by building roads, airports, etc

Then they become H1B1 workers and placed on teams where their American counterparts have to support them and bring them up to speed.
Not sure what you think your graph or link is showing, but it's not persuasive. You DO see that there are a lot of American STEM grads, right? There's no way we have THAT many more STEM jobs than what we can produce internally.

Yes, that's what America needs to do in order to be "great" again. Restrictive and racist immigration laws, rampant discrimination against minorities in housing, education and employment, homosexuality viewed as mental illness, back alley abortions, World War 2, the pissing contest between the U.S. and Soviet Union, and so on.
When people look back at those years as idyllic or something we should strive to "return to," take a moment and remember what the hell was going on back then. It is really just coded language for "I see a demographically changing country with too many 'others' standing in the way of 'real' Americans whose lives are being wrecked by them. It was so great when straight White, Christian males held a disproportionate amount of power by keeping everyone else in check." You constantly hear that from those on the right and I believe that's why they vote for people like Trump thinking he can somehow turn back time to that era.
When they figure out that we aren't ever going back to that no matter how many people we deport, how many laws are passed that are obviously intended to suppress minority voting rights, removing equal protections for gays, controlling women's rights to make decisions about their own bodies, etc, this country will again have the opportunity to move forward.

R535 Dude, if you don't like was I said, fine. But don't call me insane or a fool, neither of which I am. Who the fuck do you think you are? I can be just as disrespectful as you are ASSHOLE. My reply is as relevant as yours and it is on topic. This thread has gone off the rails dozens of times. Hell, it became pure bigotry, stereotyping and hate speech several times and you choose to bitch about my comment? Find someone else who will argue back and forth with you, because I'm not doing it after this. SHOVE IT and enjoy your misery, sir.

What is crazy is I agree with both R534 and R535.

You try working with someone who constantly asks questions and uses phrases like “today morning” or misuses words like “doubt”, and tell me how you feel.

[quote]We had extremely strict immigration laws from the 1920s through the late 1960s - and indeed, they were racist. But people also enjoyed one of the highest levels of living that we still look back in awe at.
It's true. And during those post WWII boom years (1945-1970), immigration was actually declining.

R539 just confirming that you only want to engage with people who don't get words wrong? Do you live in a bubble?

I have zero problem with Indian or any one coming to the US and getting work. I do have a problem with sponsored people who are essentially forced labor. Look at Elon. He laid off hundreds of workers at Tesla then hired H1B workers to replace them at a lower cost.

Proof that h1b1 workers are paid less and subsequently suppress wages. There is a pay differential ranging from 6 percent to 40%.

R543, the source is a little shady

Even the Church committee exposing the CIA's secrets was indirectly caused by the GOP. Schlesinger fired 1,000 people from the covert ops group when he was made CIA director. He then asked Colby to encourage the employees to rat out anything they had seen in 25 years that was potentially illegal. That led to a 639 page document which he shared with Congress, which, surprise surprise, leaked.

r481 Thankfully we don't get any Indian nationalist.

All the want from easing the H1B requirements is to replace expensive US workers with cheaper Indian workers who are unable to complain or leave. It is the opposite of moving your manufacturing out of the country to save money. It is moving your workforce into the country to save money.

H1B visas are specifically not immigrant visas and are generally restricted to two three year periods - six years total. I had an employee on such a visa once (not from India once) and can see how easily it could lend itself to labor abuses.
IMHO the 1922 immigration restriction contributed the Great Depression. Also IMHO, the large number of highly desirable immigrants fleeing fascism, along with strong unions and high government investment in Infrastructure and R&D all contributed to the postwar boom.
There is loan replacement plan for MDs that go into research so there’s one that isn’t tied to geography.

What is their problem, R424? Are they doing this to troll people, or are they just cheapskates who like free stuff?

No one twisted their arm to come over here Mary, therefore they aren't forced labor.
We need to kill this notion once and for all that immigrants (llegal or legal) are somehow victims because they make bad choices in life when they come over here. They are not victims.
by Anonymous | reply 552 | January 2, 2025 9:41 PM |
I never said anyone twisted thier arms. In fact it is attractive to them because they get to come to the US, make more money than they would in their home country and send it back home, maybe establish a life here. Not blaming them at all. It's the corporations and by proxy the billionaires who don't want to pay Americans a market rate for their skills. Look at the other poster. Layoffs at Amazon, Tesla and Meta. America workers replaces with H1B visa workers who do the same work for cheaper AND cannot leave the job they are brought here to do, One of my co-workers is from India on an H1B. We talk openly about pay and he makes a lot less than I do and we do the same work. He cannot get a raise because he is afraid to ask for one for fear of being replaced with another H1B visa person. He cannot look for another job because he requires sponsorship. He is locked into his job. That is why all these billionaire tech guys want easier H1B visas. To replace expensive American workers with cheap labor from India. People who cannot job hop, ask for raises or even think about complaining, They don't know any better when they get here and when they find out, there is nothing they can do about it.

And a bunch of Indian nerds justifying their working 80 hours a week as HIB coolies or as doctors who had to choose between Prankartatesh, Jaipuristant over Uranus, Oklahoma.
They just mad because they *thought* Republicans liked them. SUPERIOR INTELLIGENCE.

I am going to laugh when Food prices stay high (eggs are already soaring again due to avian flu), gas prices go high, American white-collar workers are replaced with H1B visa people and the economy goes to shit all thanks to Musk and Trump. Oh and your healthcare is gutted. All thanks to the Orange Cheeto and his co-president Elon.

Unfortunately, I think there's a lot of long-held animosity towards Indians because of the way they treated the Cowboys.

Running away from their fucked up garbage nation to professional class wages in the US.
A caste fueled, brain drain powered hollowing out of India.
Allowing the US to neglect its impoverished lower classes. Because hey! fuck them. Flyover state poverty imbeciles.
Not good for India, not good for the US.

The U.S. is a 'garbage can' according to the asshole-elect, so they are going from garbage to garbage.

If they voted for Trump, they deserve what they get. No sympathy at all from me for those who gave him power again. I guess some people need to be fucked over in order to see they were lied to and learn that his 'concepts of a plan' were nothing but bullshit.
