Teen brothers from North Carolina are missing after going duck hunting in California

Two teenage brothers have been missing for over a week in California after one of their kayaks flipped during a duck hunting trip.

Wesley and Andruw Cornett, 17 and 19 respectively, were last heard from on December 14 during their trip to Thermalito Afterbay in Butte County. On Monday, authorities announced that they were scaling back searches.

According to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, 911 dispatch received a call from Andruw around 8:30 a.m. on the day of the incident, saying that his brother’s kayak had overturned.

He told officers he was going to jump in to save his brother after being advised “multiple times” not to get in the water. Neither boy was wearing a life jacket.

Thermalito Afterbay is a 4,300-acre lake with weeds up to 10 feet tall and temperatures that threaten hypothermia, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

First responders arrived within 15 minutes of the initial call and located the kayak but not the teenagers. About 20 minutes later, a kayak, paddles and waders were found, but the boys were nowhere to be seen.

In a statement on Monday — the 10th day of the search — BCSO said it was shifting the focus to a “continuous limited search.” Over the course of the search divers located Andruw’s pants, Wesley’s wallet and jacket with his phone inside.

“At this point in the recovery, we have exhausted efforts with divers and sonar technology and will shift the focus to a continuous limited search,” the statement said. “This involves surface search methods, which includes aircrafts, drones, boats, on-shore vehicles, and K9s.”

Around 280 team members from 21 different agencies had previously been involved in the search.

“Thousands of acres have been searched by boat, by ground and by raft,” said Trevor Skaggs, with the Sheriff Office’s search and rescue team, in a video shared by the Sheriff’s Office.

In a post on GoFundMe, April Clark, the boys’ mother, said Andrew was a “hero in my eyes” for trying to save his brother.

“The Sheriff is saying this is now a search and recovery so I will have to also plan to lay my two boys to rest,” she wrote. “This is a freak accident that my family and I are trying to wrap our heads around and we also have 4 girls at home who we still need to care for.”

“This is hard for me to write as I’m beyond broken into so many pieces.”

Well.

No sympathy for animal killers.

by Anonymousreply 2December 26, 2024 2:51 AM

No word one way or the other if they had that dog with them. Hopefully no, but if yes I hope it managed to escape with its life.

by Anonymousreply 3December 26, 2024 2:55 AM

Hypothermia? Couldn't swim? Impaired?

Strange. The air temperature in Butte County wasn't particularly cold - 50-60s with lows around 40s.

by Anonymousreply 4December 26, 2024 3:00 AM

R2, I am anti-gun, but I have no problem with hunting if it follows licensed law.

Do you hate Native Americans who also hunt?

by Anonymousreply 5December 26, 2024 3:01 AM

Why wouldn't you wear a life jacket? Dumb.

by Anonymousreply 6December 26, 2024 3:03 AM

Young males + open water = rarely a good combo

by Anonymousreply 7December 26, 2024 3:05 AM

Was it brackish water?

by Anonymousreply 8December 26, 2024 3:08 AM

Poor Twinks.

I admire the older brother who jumped in to save his younger brother.

I would have done the same.

Oh mary - hunting is necessary for all kinds of reasons. Population control and ecological maintenance. Imagine how destructive deer and boars would be if allowed to breed out of control. Less problematic animals can still overbreed, eat everything available in their environment, and then die out.

by Anonymousreply 10December 26, 2024 3:11 AM

This photo likely explains why the bodies are difficult to find.

Good nutrition had given them some length of bone.

by Anonymousreply 12December 26, 2024 3:11 AM

There's some part of me that says "Eh, Trumpers. Fuck 'em."

And then there's another part that says "These were basically children, and one tried to save the other."

The latter part wins.

In 2024.

by Anonymousreply 13December 26, 2024 3:12 AM

I agree with R10.

If you eat beef, or pork, or chicken or even duck, then you need to STFU.

Humans eat animals.

Deal with it.

by Anonymousreply 14December 26, 2024 3:13 AM

Long way to go to kill ducks.

by Anonymousreply 15December 26, 2024 3:26 AM

[quote]Strange. The air temperature in Butte County wasn't particularly cold - 50-60s with lows around 40s.

People can develop hypothermia when the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Not dressing appropriately, wearing wet clothing, and/or drinking alcohol can lead to hypothermia in temperatures above freezing.

by Anonymousreply 16December 26, 2024 4:22 AM

Hypothermia is a killer of young men in temperatures as high as 50 degrees. I nearly lost a good friend on a hiking trip in mild weather in April. Fortunately he realized what was happening.

Women seem to be less effected, possibly due to the way that the female body can tap into fat reserves fasted that the male body can.

by Anonymousreply 17December 26, 2024 4:29 AM

It’s creepy they found clothes but not the bodies.

by Anonymousreply 18December 26, 2024 4:34 AM

The brothers knew they could not express their love while trapped in their true identities. So they have faked their deaths and are now establishing lives elsewheres under new, NONRELATED names.

R18 I was a lifeguard in my misspent youth. We train to take off shoes, pants, anything that weighs you down. We teach that to swimmers as young as 6. It’s entirely possible they stripped, swam a distance, then tired and drowned away from the clothing.

Native Americans don’t hunt for sport

by Anonymousreply 21December 26, 2024 4:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 22December 26, 2024 4:46 AM

Final game score:

Humans 0, Ducks 2

by Anonymousreply 23December 26, 2024 5:09 AM

I'm sure they're fine.

Did they discover any Smiley Faces 😊 in the vicinity?

Hot.

Have they seen each other naked before?

by Anonymousreply 26December 26, 2024 5:17 AM

From the Daily Mail on 12/23 "Urgent Hunt for California Brothers...":

"During the first search, the brothers' belongings and puppy were recovered from the scene, KRCR reported."

So the puppy was discovered alive?

by Anonymousreply 27December 26, 2024 5:42 AM

This happened to my kids. The wrong one lived.

by Anonymousreply 28December 26, 2024 6:34 AM

Overturned kayak? We've heard this story before.

by Anonymousreply 29December 26, 2024 7:53 AM

I'm with R19. I hope this was a carefully planned escape to a better life for them, and that right now they are in Brooklyn living their best hipster lives.

by Anonymousreply 30December 26, 2024 8:17 AM

Any particular reason this story is of interest to DL, OP? Were the brothers gay?

by Anonymousreply 31December 26, 2024 9:54 AM

Hypothermia can occur from an extended period of time being the water which is below 70 degrees.

by Anonymousreply 34December 26, 2024 6:44 PM

Therms.

by Anonymousreply 35December 26, 2024 9:01 PM

Are there no ducks in North Carolina?

by Anonymousreply 36December 26, 2024 9:41 PM

R36, it’s a persistent question. See R15.

by Anonymousreply 37December 26, 2024 9:43 PM

Always happy see those who kill innocent animals for fun die.

Yes. The world is a better place without them.

by Anonymousreply 38December 26, 2024 9:45 PM

Mmmmm... . R38.

You're so delicious in a French l'orange sauce, or even crispy fried and stuffed in a chinese bao bun with plum sauce.

Yum Yum!

I can't wait to hunt you, gut you, season you, and cook you!!!

The average water temperature of the Sacramento River, which flows through Butte County and is fed by several mountain streams and creeks, is 49° in the afternoon and falls to 42 or 43° overnight, so at 8:30 a.m. it was super cold. (Yes, I know they weren't in the river, but general area) There's a thermal shock when a body hits the water and it can be only a few minutes before. TBH, I suspect the brother was dead by the time the second one went in.

Is the use of a canoe odd? I'm not a hunter, but some of my dad's friends hunted when I was a kid (we got pheasant and duck on occasion) and there are a couple in the neighborhood now. They all had/have aluminum flat bottom boats that don't overturn. Canoes aren't as stable.

by Anonymousreply 40December 26, 2024 10:25 PM

Sorry, meant kayak not canoe.

by Anonymousreply 41December 26, 2024 10:26 PM

This is exactly what happened to Naya Rivera.

And she was swimming in the Summer time.

This is Winter, so the water is much colder.

by Anonymousreply 43December 26, 2024 10:28 PM

Karma. The hunters become the hunted.

by Anonymousreply 44December 26, 2024 10:32 PM

Karma? No, it was a kayak,

by Anonymousreply 45December 27, 2024 3:23 AM

[quote]Were the brothers gay?

Only in our minds.

by Anonymousreply 46December 27, 2024 3:24 AM

R2 Assuming you’re vegan?

by Anonymousreply 47December 27, 2024 3:30 AM

I don't know why people think the boys weren't planning on eating the ducks.

If there were ever two kids who looked like they ate what they caught it was these two.

Their parents were so poor they couldn't even afford to spell Andrew's name correctly.

by Anonymousreply 48December 27, 2024 3:46 AM

Sounds like a single mom - different last name.

by Anonymousreply 49December 27, 2024 3:52 AM

R38 People eat ducks.

by Anonymousreply 52December 27, 2024 6:03 AM

I think the boys are with James Yoblonski.

by Anonymousreply 53December 27, 2024 6:39 AM

Are they keeping it quiet that there is no hunting on that recreational lake?

by Anonymousreply 54December 27, 2024 7:24 AM

Diving in to a 40-something degree lake to save your brother, despite almost certain death AND being warned about it?

That's love.

Stupid, but loving.

Someone that devoted to saving his sibling's life, would probably not be able to live with himself if he didn't at least try to rescue or look for his brother.

So in a way, he chose the only option that his conscience would allow.

Had he not looked for his brother, my guess is that he would have lived a horrible guilt-filled life, fueled by drugs or alcohol.

RIP to both of them.

by Anonymousreply 55December 27, 2024 7:29 AM

Is this really a thing to go across the country for a hunting trip? In Flyoverstan, you might go a state over if that but this seems like a stretch. But what do J know.

by Anonymousreply 56December 27, 2024 9:29 AM

I*, not J, not K

by Anonymousreply 57December 27, 2024 9:30 AM

I can find nothing about North Carolina in the OP's article or a Yahoo news search. His spell check must have fritzed.

by Anonymousreply 58December 27, 2024 10:12 AM

You're right, R58.

It should read Northern California, not North Carolina!

The smiley face killer strikes again? Just kidding, there is no smiley face killer, just drunk guys drowning.

by Anonymousreply 63January 7, 2025 6:55 PM

R18 I know when people are freezing to death they do paradoxical undressing because they actually think they are hot.
