Why did Barbra hire him for "The Prince Of Tides"? Was it to launch his acting career? Why didn't he keep acting?
Has he ever publicly come out as gay or bi and embraced the LGBTQ community?

I heard a story that he picked up some guy at a bar, and left the trick’s house when he walked into the bedroom and this was on the wall.
If it isn’t true, it should be.

He suffers from depression. I think he's gotten better in recent years, though. I wonder what will happen to him when he loses his parents? Elliot Gould is 86 and Barbra is 82. I also wonder how much of his mom's estate will go to him? I think she'll leave a lot of it to her charitable interests.

Richard Perry has passed away. He produced the Streisand albums Stoney End, Barbra Joan Streisand, Live Concert at the Forum and Emotion. He also produced Carly Simon's You're So Vain and Nillson's Without You. He was Jane Fonda's boyfriend for a few years.

by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 25, 2024 11:07 PM |
Excerpts from a recent article about him:
Gould says he loved to listen to music as a young boy. “I remember my first favorite record was ‘I Say a Little Prayer’ by Dionne Warwick. I had the 45 and the plastic record player you would lift. ‘Up, Up and Away’ was my other favorite song,” Gould says.
Yet, as the son of two Hollywood icons, cameras were constantly in his face. Looking back, he says his childhood was unconventional. “I wanted to be a part of the Brady Bunch because a sense of a close family was something I didn’t have,” Gould says. “My folks separated before I even remember them together. My mother was consumed with a major career, and my dad was off doing his own thing and starting another family, so that’s challenging for any child.”
A young Gould appeared in two Streisand films, “Up the Sandbox” and “The Prince of Tides,” and teen flicks like “Say Anything,” but ultimately, he walked away from an early acting career. “I was outed more than 30 years ago in the tabloids, which definitely would’ve changed the trajectory of my acting career, but I didn’t care that much,” Gould admits.
I caught up with Gould at his personally-designed Americana-themed farmhouse, that sits high atop a mountain overlooking Santa Barbara County. Now, Gould is mostly at peace with the trauma from his past. He seemed so at peace; he didn’t even flinch when a tarantula showed up during his photo shoot!
But it’s a bittersweet moment for Gould. He had to say goodbye to his beloved pup Eli just days before our interview. “My dog Eli was my best friend for the last 12 and a half years, and in a sense, I was never lonely, even though I may not have been in a relationship,” Gould says. “But even though it was incredibly sad, it was also very beautiful because he was so loved and knew it.”
“I’m not somebody who has regrets. I don’t live in the past at all. I try to live in the present as much as possible, and I don’t live in the future too much,” Gould says. “I just want to be at peace and comfortable in my own skin and integrity. So, that’s how I live my life. I do what feels right for me, and it isn’t always what other people think I should do, but that’s okay.”

In her memoir from about 20 years ago, Warwick made it known she was not too fond of Streisand back in the 60s or in the present day. I think it actually had something to do with Marty Ehrlichman back then, when she and Streisand were just starting out. Warwick never liked Aretha, either.

Jason is a grounded, kind man. He has a great relationship with both of his parents. He is very guarded when meeting people because of weird experiences over the years with people who are star struck by his parents, especially his mother.

IIRC, he got great reviews for his role in POT in 1991, and critics were interested in what his next major acting project would be (I agreed). He was very impressive in his movie debut. Yet, he didn't push the acting career and didn't take on more major roles.

I heard the same thing about Jason and Chasity - they went to the same elementary schools together, and lived not too far from each other. According to Dionne's memoir (once again), when she was a divorced single mother of two, Cher bought the house next to her. Dionne's two sons and Chasity were very good friends, and Dionne and Cher would alternate on driving the three kids to school each week (she said she was very friendly with Cher at the time, in the mid-70s). She did credit Cher for being a great mom. (I don't think Cher has mentioned DW in her memoir - I'm right at this part of her life now, where she left Sonny, but no mention of DW).
She did mention her two sons were also school / neighborhood friends with 'another little boy' who lived in the neighborhood, but his famous mom wasn't part of the 'car pool' and her son had a private driver. I always suspected she was talking about Jason and his mother Barbra.

I didn't know that, but it would explain why he made some attempts to have a career as an actor and/or singer but never seemed serious about it.
By the way, I clearly remember that, years ago, there were reports that Jason had become HIV-positive. But I can find no information about that whatever through Google, so I guess either it was a lie OR, if true, the fact has been very well covered up.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 26, 2024 4:52 PM |
Jason lives off a generous trust fund, he doesn’t need anything from his mother’s estate, though he’ll get plenty. R7, there are pills for depression. And Jason has enough dough for therapy the rest of his life. Perhaps his problems stem from never having a regular job.
Ha ha, R44. Streisand was cheating on Gould long before Omar Sharif. Luckily for her, Gould was already working steadily as a movie actor when they separated. They divorced two years later.
Thanks for the laugh, R34. That’s ridiculous.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 26, 2024 5:04 PM |
I vaguely recall that when I first read reports that Jason was HIV-positive, that would have been before the availability of all the current drugs that make the condition manageable rather than a death sentence, so if the reports were true, that might certainly have contributed to his depression.

Remember when on one of those recent concert tours, Babs told this total bullshit story about "suddenly hearing Jason sing" in the shower (?!) when Jason was in his 40s, and "NEVER KNOWING HE HAD SUCH A GREAT VOICE". And then "suddenly" Quincy Jones "begged" to record him.
Um, sure, Yeah, I believe that. Sure.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 26, 2024 5:08 PM |

And his voice was just okay.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 26, 2024 5:29 PM |
^^^I think Jason's singing voice is better than "just okay," but I don't believe that ridiculous story either. Apparently, Streisand thinks her fans are so gullible as to believe everything she says, no matter if it's obviously B.S. (and I don't mean that abbreviation to stand for Barbra Streisand).
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 26, 2024 5:38 PM |
The problem with Jason's voice and interpretations - they make every song sound the same. He does these jazz harmonies on EVERY part of the song. His sound itself is good, nothing special.
And what the fuck is Streisand doing in his house when he's in the shower singing? So many of their photos together they look like boyfriend and girlfriend, not mother and son. It's always PERVY.

r17: "How Deep Is The Ocean" is a creepy song for a mother and (especially a gay) son to be singing to each other.
When a very young Garland sang a romantically passionate "How Deep Is The Ocean" in 1938 the announcer commented "Which Judy sings to mothers everywhere!" Judy includes new lyrics referencing her mother which given her bitch of a mother is even creepier than the Barbra-Jason duet.

This caused the first of many rifts.

" Oh, I just -- I think everything he does is great. You know, I mean, my son, that's unconditional love. I swear. It's a terrible thing to say, but I think my son could do something really bad, and I know I would find a way to justify it."

Don’t discount the Josh Brolin daughters who will be generously taken care of in Barbra’s will. There’s also the Jon Peters daughters she (used to?) adore. Barbra always wanted a girl.

R109 I will always respect him as he is the one who is (more or less) responsible for his mom's duet with Donna Summer 45 years ago, making it one of the biggest hits in each of their careers as well as the decade.
Streisand has said more than once her son was 'the biggest Donna Summer fan' in the late 70s and listened to her records constantly. He pushed her to do the duet before she even heard the song played.

R110, Jason was apparently also responsible for Barbra recording "Sing" from SESAME STREET, because it was his favorite song when he was a little kid :-)

R111 Yes, but let's not hold that against him. He didn't know good music at that young age.

Jason Gould has every right to his privacy and his HIV status is nobody's business.
His Dad isn't that rich so of course his mother helps out.
The voice is good but his phrasing and arrangements could use a little work.
Considering his parentage and compared to his peers, Jason has turned out just fine.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | December 28, 2024 4:44 PM |
Jason was also responsible for getting his mother to record Enough Is Enough with Donna Summer. Barbra wasn't sure at first, but Jason was a huge Donna Summer fan (of course) and begged her to do it.

Digression due to Jason's blandness boring me:
r118's post reminds me that when Babs does pop her clogs, the power freak "director Barbra" will fall away from our collective memories and it is this bright 21 year-old, who som surprised us with her voice, inventiveness and quirky humor that will come back to the fore. Barbara 1963 (Ed Sullivan-JudyGarlandShow) -1974 (TWWW, What's Up, Doc?) will be the Barbra we think of from then on.

I knew Jason from Fire I back in the day and NYC , he used to work out at Equinox on the UWS. I found him attractive and a nice guy we would dance together. I remember at one morning party we were dancing and Somewhere by Barbra played and I dunno it seemed everyone was staring at him and he seemed uncomfortable , so I whisked him off the dance floor for a while. I never spoke to him about his mother but he never seemed comfortable in his skin around gay crowds but I enjoyed his company.

I saw Jason in WeHo many years ago sitting at an outdoor table surrounded by 5 or 6 of the handsomest White guys, his nebbish look sticking out like a sore thumb in that group. I felt sorry for him. It seemed so apparent that they were they type who would have never hung out with someone who looks like Jason if it wasn't for who he was or rather, for whose son he was.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | December 29, 2024 7:15 AM |
i've heard Jason is a nice guy, a bit reserved, a bit of a loner. Those aren't traits that will help you get ahead in Hollywood no matter who your mom is. Jason doesn't strike me as all that driven or ambitious.
Who remembers the short film he made about 25 years ago where he played a skewed version of himself, dealing with being BS's son. He had created a 12-step group for celebrity children, and Christina Crawford was also in the cast. It was quirky and cute; I think Alexis Arquette was in it as well. Cut to today and you have a similar upper ring from Jack Robbins, who is Susan Sarandon son. He has an ongoing series on TikTok called Nepo Baby, he's trying to make a name for himself, and yet he uses his mom's name obsessively, because he knows that's his biggest claim to fame. Good sport and supportive mom Sarandon is in various scenes as needed, and it's all very fast and fun. there's no comparing the old school way that Jason Gould made his movie with the quick, low budget turn around or something like Nepo Baby. These are indeed faster times.

I’d like to ensnare Jason, have him bring me over to meet his mom, then watch her eyes bug out as I spill Manischewitz all over her ghastly, matchy-matchy velvet interiors.

I remember reading Barbra asked him who his favorite singers were when he was a kid, and he said Donna Summer and The Bee Gees. She took him to the Gibb brothers concert at Dodger Stadium and that started the wheels for Guilty, so you could thank him for that as well.

Back in the 90s, I called someone over from one of those 976 phone lines (before Grindr!).
I opened the door, it was Jason. Of course I knew who he was, but I didn't want to ruin his fantasy. So I made him do the task we agreed upon on our short conversation. I gave him my phone number.
He called and came back, I think twice. Always calling from a payphone, (remember those?)
I never led on I knew who he was.
Years later, I would see him occasionally at my gym. He always recognized me. He always smiled or said hello.
And for those of you dying to know...Yes -it was big. He was gifted with a beautiful dick. I didn't play with it because it wasn't what he came to me for. But it was hard as a rock in his hand the entire time he.......
