"Their conclusion: In the 10 years after a Walmart Supercenter opened in a given community, the average household in that community experienced a 6 percent decline in yearly income—equivalent to about $5,000 a year in 2024 dollars—compared with households that didn’t have a Walmart open near them. Low-income, young, and less-educated workers suffered the largest losses," writes Rogé Karma.
The Dollar Store might have this effect too

I’ve never lived close enough to one to warrant a visit but last year I was out in burbs and saw one and stopped by to see what it was all about. It had an enormous grocery section, which wasn’t expecting. I walked all around the massive store and looked in many departments. A few observations: the shelves were very disorganized and poorly stocked, the patrons were exactly as expected, it was very busy, the workers were nowhere to be found, there was a weird smell - hard to describe, kind of chemical I guess.
I’m in no way a snob but I have no desire to ever return.

Most of the Walmarts I've been to near me have awful lighting and a very dingy look. It's like shopping in someone's basement. A very depressing vibe.
Target, by contrast seems cleaner, and a warmer environment.

I was in a Wal-Mart maybe three times in my life, out in the stocks or extreme exurbs. Even bright and new ones with the classic People of Wal-Mart are depressing as fuck, I didn't waste any time in them, nor find anything you like about them. I've known some towns that suffered at the introduction of a Wal-Mart, small stores folding fast and streets of boarded up stores.

I shop at one sporadically here. It seems OK. I've also shopped at their Neighborhood Market, which is a full grocery but seems more like an Aldi.
I don't loathe it, but I try to limit my visits. I do like the Target experience better. Unfortunately, I'm in an area with few choices - I miss the array of choices available when I lived in the midwest (Meijer was always great).

Walmarts used to be so clean and shiny. As Kmarts were dying, they were a complete nasty mess inside.
Wonder if Walmarts are moving in that direction

The poor man’s Costco ? Instead of leaving Costco — what the hell did I buy for $200 — at least you have a rotisserie chicken and two loaves of bread ; you leave Walmart — I bought nothing for $100 - except some razors which I would open immediately and slash my wrists —— but I can’t figure out how to open

R8 you sound like someone who would also say:
“We never watch television”
“I haven’t been through a drive-thru in years”

R8 is a liar, Walmart threads always ring out the liars, Walmart isn't hurting and will not fit a long while.
