I think nowadays it really is because it means little more time between hair appts. It’s much easier to darken her roots than go through the process of lifting the remaining color to go blonde. Gray hair grows in unbelievably fast and it’s a pain in the ass.

R30, the grey roots will show through the black roots as long as it grows and black makes grey pop out more. It’s a stupid thing to do. It won’t cover it. You have to do it non-stop unlike if you paint them blond. She’s doing this for vanity. To live in a fantasy.
