Not to be a priss, but I still think it's kind of remarkable that he got his start in gay porn and yet was able to make mainstream Hollywood movies.
It's actually not that uncommon. Especially in the 1970s and early 1980s, the era of "porno chic," there were a number of people who directed porn or who worked on porn production crews who later went on to have mainstream careers. It was good training ground for people who wanted to work in the filmmaking industry.
Wes Craven, for example, wrote, directed, and appeared in (in a non-sex role) a porn movie in the 70s called "The Fireworks Woman." Spalding Gray appeared in a 70s porn movie (nude and having sex on film) called "The Farmer's Daughter." Sonny Landham, from "Predator" and "48 Hours," appeared in over a dozen porn movies in the 70s before breaking into the mainstream.
Stu Segall was a prolific director of porn in the 70s and 80s, then went on to become a producer on TV shows like "Hunter," "Fashion House," and "Pencsacola: Wings of Gold."

Francis Ford Coppola got his start directing porn.

R5 Not really. He directed a sequence for a softcore "nudie cutie" film that didn't feature any actual sex.

There’s a whole Wikipedia article about adult stars who crossed over to mainstream. Other than Brent Corrigan, the stars who were in gay porn are thin sauce.

You'd probably be shocked to know how many well known Hollywood directors also direct porn on the side. Under fake names obviously.

R9 R6's comment pertained to Francis Ford Coppola, not Wash Westmoreland.

Looks like he hasn’t done much since his partner died nearly a decade ago. Perhaps the partner was the real talent.

Some film editors who are known for their work in mainstream movies also edit porn videos.

There was Dennis Parker (aka Wade Nichols) who was in gay and straight porn and then was on the Edge of Night for several years.

It's strange but porn actors are good at comedy. When a porno has a plot, they are often competent.

I read a long article about Wade Nichols that was very interesting and touching. I wish I remember where. Anyone? I think one of those blog like sites on gay history that some much appreciated old dinosaurs still have running.
