I usually buy Pepperidge Farm since it's not too big but three supermarkets were out so I bought Arnolds.
What brand of white bread do you buy?

Like any sensible person, I bake my own bread, including white bread and a sourdough white.
But you're the troll, right?
Thought so.

Nature's Own white bread

I don't really usually get bread or ever white bread but I absolutely love friehoffer bread. Only on the shelf brand I will buy.

ALL supermarket brands are crap.
Chemicaly enriched flour and look up "bromated" and see what that's all about.
Read the ingredient lists.
Why should a product that should be JUST flour, water, yeast and salt have so much junk in it?
Pepperidge Farm white sandwich bread: MADE FROM: ENRICHED WHEAT FLOUR (FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), WATER, SUGAR, SOYBEAN OIL, YEAST, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: WHEAT GLUTEN, SALT, CALCIUM PROPIONATE AND SORBIC ACID TO EXTEND FRESHNESS, MONOGLYCERIDES, WHEY*, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, SOY LECITHIN.

We have a bread machine and bake a honey wheat loaf a couple times a week. However, when occasionally wishing for easy sliced bread, we will buy Dave's Killer White.

The La Brea bakery breads are good. Costco also makes some nice loaves.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 24, 2024 2:37 AM |
OP, you buy white bread? Tsk, tsk.
All the crap I eat, and I'm still off the bread.
Only a sub (hoagie) for a special treat.

Since I have a small daughter whose tastes are limited and absolute, I buy Bimbo square (not raised top) white bread. It's easier to cut off the crusts than non-square bread. A loaf lasts a couple weeks.
Otherwise I bake my own. My absolute favorite store-bought bread was Brownberry Catherine Clark's recipe wheat bread, but I haven't seen it in years. Brownberry still makes other decent breads, but the Catherine Clark's recipe was divine. It had no preservatives and the label recommended storing in the ice box.

Dave's White Done Right or Panera - but PF is my favorite. Do not like whole wheat or anything "healthy" it just doesn't taste right.

That is one ingredient i will never buy

I'm not a big bread eater, but sometimes I get nostalgic cravings for the childhood sandwiches Mom made me: peanut butter & jelly, tunafish, bologna & mustard, grilled cheese. For these, ordinary supermarket sliced white bread is a must, so I buy my local store brand, Market Basket, here in MA.

For years and years, I used to buy San Luis Round Sliced Sheepherders Bread. It was the best. Such a flavorful white bread. But then they up and discontinued it. Boo hiss.
After much searching, the best replacement I've found - surprise, surprise - is at Target! They have a brand called Favorite Day, Sliced Cottage Bread. It's excellent as well.

I didn't know Dave's made that White Done Right bread. I usually get the 21 Grains "flavor."
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 24, 2024 2:51 AM |
If I am forced to buy supermarket bread, Dave's Killer Bread is the only one I can stand. And I always buy multigrain bread, never white bread. But honestly I love to get bread from a bakery and then it is also multi grain or whole wheat or sprouted wheat. People who eat white bread are courting DEATH!

“… the ice box,” r13, aww. My grandma called it that.
Actually my first apt in SF even had an actual ice box in the kitchen wall, with a slot for the ice. I kept overflow canned goods in it.

[quote]Why should a product that should be JUST flour, water, yeast and salt have so much junk in it?
Because otherwise it would have a shelf-life of 2-3 days.

I bakes. Love the taste of fresh fresh.

I bake my own bread sometimes, but it's always multigrain (usually white unbleached flour, plus oatmeal and bulgur wheat) But when I don't have time, I buy Dave's Killer Bread Good Seed variety. Delicious.
For a white bread, I buy Grandma Sycamores Home Maid Bread. But I think it's only available in western states. It is not air bread like Wonder bread. Somehow it has some substance to it, which makes it good for things like grilled cheese sandwiches.
Here are the ingredients for the poster keeping track above:
Enriched Wheat Flour [Flour Malted Barley Flour, Reduced Iron, Niacin Thiamin Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Folic Acid], Water, Sugar, Salt, Potato Flakes, Yeast, Wheat Gluten, Cultured Wheat Flour, Grain Vinegar, Citric Acid, Soy Lecithin.

I'm agog at all the "Dave's Killer Bread" fans here. It's sickly sweet and full of sugar and/or HFCS.
Disgusting.
I stick to Sourdough bread.

Most breads that have whole wheat flour are sweetened more than white breads because milled whole wheat goes rancid very quickly. (The bran and the germ have oils that are removed when milled into white flour - the oils are what go rancid). In an ideal world, wheat kernels would be ground immediately before baking. But we don't live in an ideal world. I've baked bread with whole wheat flour without using any sweetener, and the taste was bitter.

I don't buy white bread at all. If it ain't brown, I ain't down.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 24, 2024 1:34 PM |
I stopped buying sliced white bread since I invariably threw out half of the loaf when it went bad. For the random sandwich or morning "toast" I buy those refrigerated English muffins which have a much longer shelf life. If I do buy bread, I buy fresh-baked crusty Italian bread from the bakery section.

Costco Multi grain bread from their bakery when it's fresh and still warm. OMG it's to die for. I know. I type Fat.
