Love, Actually. Discuss

A Christmas movie that seems to have great fans and great detractors.

Today I watched for the first time. I had avoided it because I heard it's filled with flimsy "grand romanticism". Well it is! Plus it's terribly sloppy and choppy. What happend to 1/3 of the subplots and characters? Rodrigo Santoro's character is introduced, looks gorgeous in his underwear, then dropped. Among others.

But somehow I didn't mind the bombastic manipulation of my heartstrings since I was expecting such, from a gussied up trash movie. I consider it an "airplane classic" because it's always on the menu on flights. I give it a "B" for a cheesy movie to watch on an airplane.

What's your take on this movie?

Poor Emma Thompson’s character. The ho gets a fancy necklace and she gets a Joni Mitchell CD

I love the Liam Neeson story line with his son. That was cute

I like almost all the story lines except Laura Linney’s story. She was chewing the scenery big time.

Hugh Grant’s love interest wasn’t fat. Sheesh

I thought it was a great, fun movie. Enjoyable to follow all the different subplots. I liked the part with the writer and the housekeeper the best. It's a bit dated with its "bring out the hot chicks" mentality -- shows how fast the world has changed in just 20-odd years.

I don't think Rodrigo Santoro was abruptly dropped (much as I would have liked to see more of him!) His character served the point of showing that Laura Linney's character was unhealthfully wrapped up in trying to protect her brother.

"That would be nice. Yes being my answer."

I used to get teary during Emma Thompson's Joni Mitchell moment (as I was also married to a thoughtless asshole), but now it's when Sam leaps into Liam Neeson's arms at the end of their airport pilgrimage.

I, actually, love this movie quite a bit.

R3, my name's Colin Frizzell, and i've got a big knob!

I just realized that there was an entire subplot deleted from the movie every time I've seen it since I saw it in the theater, the one about the porn stand-ins. And it was still too long!

What movie is pictured at R3

Love, Actually which is the subject of this thread.

Maybe I wasn't paying close attention but do we see PECS again after the bedroom scene?

The poor actors are in the version I just watched and their story is concluded by a sweet date on Xmas eve.

What scene is that pictured at R3? I must have missed it. Looks like usa. I just watched this movie and I don't remember what happens after he leaves the bar with the three chicks. I assumed it was another dropped plot until the last two minutes of the movie. Maybe i was at the refrigerator.

Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Love, Actually should be sold in a boxed set.

It is. It’s when he ends up at the hot chicks’ apartment and has sex with all of them. At R3 that’s the building in which they live.

The writer is old enough to be the maids father. Most of the romances are age disperate.

by Anonymousreply 12December 24, 2024 1:06 AM

I completely missed this scene. Oh well, I guess I watch again in a few years.

For years we had annual we hate Love, Actually threads. OP, your thread can serve that purpose this year.

It's a bit twee for me.

by Anonymousreply 15December 25, 2024 9:10 AM

R14 yes I rememer those, R14. I'm OP and those threads led me to never watch it. Everything is there to hate the film but I can indulge this kind of sappy movie sometimes, as here.
