John Fetterman Tells Democrats To 'Chill Out' About Trump's Return To Office

The Pennsylvania senator said he won't be "rooting against" the president-elect once he's back in the White House either.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) downplayed the drama that Donald Trump’s second term as president could cause, telling his fellow Democrats there is no need to “freak out” before the Republican has even returned to office.

During a Sunday interview on ABC’s “This Week,” the legislator told host Jonathan Karl that he thinks many of his peers’ handwringing about Trump has been counterproductive.

Asked for his thoughts on if the president-elect has the potential to be successful in his second term, the senator said that he thinks “rooting against” Trump would be the wrong thing for any leader to do.

“If you’re rooting against the president, you are rooting against the nation,” he said. “I’m not ever going to be where I want a president to fail.”

by Anonymousreply 1December 23, 2024 4:47 PM

He is a complete disappointment.

by Anonymousreply 2December 23, 2024 4:48 PM

Yes, I want Trump to fail because for one, he's a criminal and a rapist and should be in prison.

Second, I want Trump to fail because I disagree with his policies like giving billionaires a further tax cut, appointing unqualified assholes to his cabinet and following Project 2025 which threatens to cut Social Security an Medicare.

by Anonymousreply 3December 23, 2024 4:50 PM

Well we should all listen to him because he’s so stable

by Anonymousreply 4December 23, 2024 4:52 PM

Fetterman said he is open to supporting Hegseth and Patel.

Asshole.

He was asked a question and gave a smart response when you consider that Trump is the most popular politician in the country right now. “If you’re rooting against the president, you are rooting against the nation,“ How is that false. The problem is a fucking megalomaniac fascist won the presidency because of white privilege and an incompetent AG. But most of the country does not see Trump a megalomaniac fascist.

by Anonymousreply 6December 23, 2024 4:55 PM

Fetterman is the all new Joe Manchin in a hoodie.

by Anonymousreply 7December 23, 2024 4:56 PM

This man literally ran on a Bernie Sanders style progressive platform and called himself such during the campaign and now he’s doing this shit. He’s worse than Manchin and Sinema. A grifter through and through.

by Anonymousreply 8December 23, 2024 4:57 PM

The thing about Trump is that he will fail whether you want him to, or not. He's destined to be a failure as president.

by Anonymousreply 9December 23, 2024 4:58 PM

He!s smart and offers a model for Dems in red or purple states.

by Anonymousreply 10December 23, 2024 4:58 PM

R10 Fuck off with that shit already. It was retarded to believe for a second the Dems could beat Trump by adopting the same rightwing policy they'd be attacking him for for years before the election. It's even more retarded now because only retards can eat shit at the same spot over and over again and never learn a damn thing.

by Anonymousreply 14December 23, 2024 5:06 PM

R7 His voting record doesn’t say so. Oh well. Identity politics and Trumpism 2.0 will be the fall of America.

by Anonymousreply 15December 23, 2024 5:11 PM

I can’t tell if r10 is being sarcastic or not.

by Anonymousreply 16December 23, 2024 5:14 PM

R14 Thought Harris would win a landslide on a campaign of joy and calling Trump fascist.

by Anonymousreply 17December 23, 2024 5:14 PM

Bernie Sanders style progressivism didn’t paint white people as villains. Yes human beings are emotional and most Americans dumb as rocks.

by Anonymousreply 18December 23, 2024 5:15 PM

R10 here… not kidding at all Someone independent like Fetterman could win in Florida or Texas.

Trump ran on hatred and racism. He must fail or else that will be considered acceptable for a president

by Anonymousreply 21December 23, 2024 6:55 PM

Ironically, Trump won on a progressive message about bringing down the price of groceries, housing, childcare.

And the stupid Dems got out of that: We need to be more moderate and kick out the progressives.

by Anonymousreply 22December 23, 2024 6:56 PM

Fetterman won because he ran against Dr Oz and Dems were desperate to hold on to the Senate.

In any other normal election, he stoke would have cancelled him out

God damn he’s gone off the deep end

Kamala's "I'm a moderate schtick" was why she lost.

She never addressed the price of groceries (except to blame it all on "greedy" corporations. Never addressed childcare, education, housing). The price of stuff is what people actually care about, not some hypothetical that Trump will be a dictator

In fact it's a key reason why the far right have been beating the shit out of liberals electorally worldwide, who still refuse to wake up from the pipe dream that neoliberalism will somehow save the day and save their heads and the peasants will remain blissfully content with the ever diminishing scraps of capitalism while being told they're stupid and bigoted and don't know what's good.

by Anonymousreply 38December 24, 2024 7:14 AM

by Anonymousreply 39December 24, 2024 12:35 PM

R15 is right. Check the voting record.

But it’s not the only thing that matters. What he’s putting out into the world will ultimately prove harmful for Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 40December 24, 2024 2:50 PM

I don't read or watch the news anymore. There is no point in getting caught up in the drama. He is going to do exactly what he wants and no one has ever been able to control him. If you want to be pissed about it, blame the democrats. Weak, disorganized, fractured and impotent. I've checked out.

For this reason, I have to throw bones, mirror their thinking and create an appeasement strategy that will keep me in office.

And bottom Line, I lack the nuance and mental acuity to hold onto power in a more honest way that would serve the people of PA. My brand is all about honesty and being "one of them", so all to say: The hoodie stays and the values go.

What should he do? Declare himself the leader of the resistance and vow to destroy Trump with his last breath. So next cycle we can have two Republican Senators from Pennsylvania. No thanks.

by Anonymousreply 43December 24, 2024 3:29 PM

He needs to bait and switch. He needs to find ways ,using any means necessary, to redirect the free floating rage and desire for retribution that animates most of these low information tantrum voters toward the people that really caused it: Republicans.

He doesn't need to mention Dump by name at firs. He can effectively start this campaign by cultivating memes that portray the voters as victims. They really like being victims.and with a combination of images, memes, fact and fiction make them WANT to punish Republicans. Once that gains traction, you start mentioning Trump.

This is how Republicans achieved electoral victory.

This is more intricate and difficult work than just appeasement.

by Anonymousreply 44December 24, 2024 3:44 PM

He could say nothing

by Anonymousreply 45December 24, 2024 3:44 PM

Fetterman is an electable, popular Democrat. He got there by being common sense on immigration, pro-Zionist, policy led, and less histrionic about politics.

There’s a lesson in there for my fellow Democrats further to my left, if only they’d stop pearl clutching and hyperventilating long enough to think it through.

And to all you Biden voters who stayed at home this time, I hope Trump comes for you all first.

by Anonymousreply 58December 24, 2024 6:35 PM

Popularity makes no difference in this new political world we live in. I just don't think people understand that this is not going to be like any other administration in the history of our country. Change is going to come and fast and drastic. So fast the media won't be able to keep up and neither will people. He is going to do everything he said he was going to do and more. If his popularity is low, it doesn't matter. Brand new ball game.

by Anonymousreply 59December 24, 2024 7:03 PM

We all heard that last time, and it wasn’t that true.

His primary change was getting Roe overturned, but that was 50% Democrats’ fault — for not enshrining abortion rights into statute.

Roe (and LGBT equality) was used as a protection racket by Dems, who kept our rights weak and vulnerable to stay in power. It’s no accident that Trump was able to so easily overturn them after decades of Dems refusing to enshrine them — and LGBT voters got our rights protected from a similar fate with the Respect for Marriage Act.

Dems need to return to a common sense agenda for everyday Americans. Trump and MAGA are easily defeated if we focus on the practical concerns of everyday Americans and stop wasting all of the party’s resources on promoting deeply unpopular causes like hating Jews/Israel, allowing full grown men who “identify as women” into sports and ladies’ showers, etc.

by Anonymousreply 60December 24, 2024 7:17 PM

Nature abhors a vacuum. With Manchin and Sinema going out, Fetterman has decided to fill the contrarian niche. It’s just like in every other workplace, when the pain in the ass finally quits or gets canned, someone steps into the role. They always do.

by Anonymousreply 61December 24, 2024 7:24 PM

What is contrarian about saying 'chill out'?

by Anonymousreply 62December 24, 2024 8:13 PM

Are you a bot r60? Or worse, a panelist on a Sunday morning talk show?

Those cliches you are spouting are absolutely worthless. The Democrats constantly advance practical answers to working class problems. The Republicans constantly tell them to fuck off and work for shit wages and shut the hell up about it, cause Elon wants a tax cut. And many of them turn around and vote Republican for it. There is no magical "working class" issue that will win over those fuckers.

And while the whole trans thing does indeed hurt us, it's almost entirely an invented issue. Very few people really give a fuck one way or another because very few people actually have a real world grievance with actual trans people. But it's a very effective tool to work into a huge issue by the trained spokeswhores of the Right. Our problem is deeper. A lot of people just believe stupid shit, and they love believing stupid shit, and I don't know if we have an easy answer to that.

by Anonymousreply 63December 24, 2024 8:29 PM

> The Democrats constantly advance practical answers to working class problems.<

Democrats like Fetterman and Ritchie Torres, sure. Wealthy far lefties, not so much.

Most “progressive” Democrats cannot even display basic working class knowledge like how an apprenticeship works, union wage tiers, how long trade school is, or how union tradesmen get paid. But of course, actually listening to working people rather than lecturing them about their “best interests” from a position of ignorance, is unpopular for the know-it-alls who use our party as a personal debate society rather than a way to advance common-sense policies for everyday people.

They sure can explain about how “gender is not a binary,” or start condemning everyday working people for not being “class conscious.” That’s why we keep losing with working people, and the insistence by progressives that we need to move even further left continues to cost us election after election.

by Anonymousreply 64December 24, 2024 8:47 PM

No, actually, real Democrats in real elected offices constantly come up with policies for health care, for education, for helping the poor and the working class get an easier life, for housing, for infrastructure, for pretty much everything that affects people's lives in a practical way.

It's Republicans who spend far, far more time talking about trans, about gays, about this or that fucked up religious bullshit, or any other distraction they can come up with while delivering tax cuts for rich fucks (their only actual accomplishment ever). Will this entirely Republican government we will have in about a month even pass a minimum wage increase? No, of course not, why would they bother? Why would they even pretend to give a fuck when morons will vote for them anyway?

“We should be making everything to make it more affordable to buy a home, not less,” Harris said during her speech in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Democratic presidential nominee called for the construction of 3 million new housing units, both for rent and for sale, over the next four years — an initiative housing experts say would help improve affordability.

That’s “the most exciting part of her plans to me,” said Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin, an online real estate brokerage.

by Anonymousreply 69December 25, 2024 12:17 AM

You're right r69, but I still think things are worth discussing for the rest of us. And r66 does exactly what Trump Whores do, pretending that a practical answer to a practical problem is somehow a bunch of silly liberals caring about nonexistent racism, which we all know evaporated completely in 1970.

What Pete Buttiegieg was doing was solving a problem. A highway specifically designed by racists to fuck over a black neighborhood is still fucking over that neighborhood. Pete was acknowledging the racist bullshit behind the original construction and saying that it's time to get rid of this stupid fucking thing, and giving money to do so. And of course it was part of a much larger fund of money to repair and rebuild all sorts of other things. Yes that means spending money that could go to billionaires instead in the form of tax cuts, but I think we can all deal with the trauma of that, or at least nonTrump Cult members can.
