Trump is doubling down on his first term efforts to own Greenland.
In the last alone month for his future American Empire he's laid claim to Greenland, Canada and Panama. Its lucky he hates Mexicans or he'd probably promise to annex there too.

There exists nothing in any form or of any nature WHATSOEVER that Trump thinks of---or is ABLE to think of---in any way other than transactional.
Because HE can be bought (or leased, given his lack of loyalty), Trump views the world and everything in it as being THE SAME WAY.
Let NJ and NY outbid each other for Covid-19 equipment. Let Georgia give me fake votes or else. Pence will either not certify or he will hang. Ambassador Yovanevich will be going through some things.
Thus, he is perfectly serious in his various attempts at acquisition, from "hamberders" to votes to buildings to people to countries.

R10, There are more ways to take riches beyond establishing a traditional empire. The US has tried and often succeeded in acquiring:
Afghanistan: Gems, Minerals, Rare Earth Elements, Natural Gas; Opium/Heroin.
Iraq: Oil, Ancient Priceless Artifacts.
Guatemala, Honduras: Land. (United Fruit Co.)
Vietnam: Opium/Heroin.
Panama (Until 1999): Major Shipping Route.
Vieques (Until 2003), Guantanamo, Diego Garcia, etc : Military bases.

Generally, when a much, much larger more powerful entity takes over a much, much smaller less powerful one, the larger one dominates.

Sure buddy. America had vastly greater power after WWII was over than the British ever had, yet its exertion of influence over places in order to obtain materials, labor or trade routes was nowhere near as egregious as what the British did.
Not even in the same ballpark.
Keep pretending it was though, if it makes you feel smugger. 🤷🏻♂️

R14, yes, the Conservative Party is very likely to win the next Canadian election. But that's not because most Canadians are right-wing or are moving towards Trumpism. It's because Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party has been in power for a decade and he has overstayed his welcome.
Canada is still predominantly a moderate country, and a large majority of Canadians told pollsters last month that they would have voted for Kamala Harris:

Didn't the USA buy Georgia from the French? It's an interesting question what legitimates a state and the governments and citizens to lay claim to a land. Native tribes might have a word with the European invaders on that, but the problem doesn't end there. (Problem as in: it is an interesting question.) People in Europe get all teary-eyed at Zelenskyys patriotism but would ostracize everyone in their own country who would speak in the same terms - of themselves as a patriot or say a people have the right to a land by birth or tradition. (My personal opinion is that it is complicated. I don't believe in soil, or that my "blood" gives me a right to live in at all. But then: Israel exists and I do believe Israel has a right to exist. I am a patriot in the sense that I love living in my country, I would defend it, but I don't have any pride (to be proud of something that I had no part in would be stupid) - only a sense of special obligation I don't feel to other countries. (This ends at a personal level of course.)

Yes, that's how it currently is, but the country seems to be shifting right and will probably return to pre-1950s values by decade's end and for the remainder of the century.
In short, liberals had their time in the sun in the late 20th/early 21st centuries, but that seems to be winding down.

“Greenland” was, appropriately enough, a real estate scam. It’s not green; in fact, it’s virtually uninhabitable. Seventy-five percent of it is covered in ice. Only 57,000 people live there. If there was some purpose to that place, the Danes would have figured it out a long time ago.

Since Trump thinks of himself as some innovative, unique leader, let him hold a rally on an island near Greenland and invite his non-imprisoned January 6th mobsters and MAGA faithful there to launch an invasion of the island without the U.S. military. Here's hoping Greenlanders have superior harpoon skills. Like they'd be okay with a downgrade in quality of life and democracy by leaving Denmark and joining the United States. Haven't we learned that we won't be greeted as liberators in countries we invade and occupy?

R49, If nations were to sell off useless real estate, I nominate the US and Mar-a-Lago.
Greenland would be destroyed if we were to acquire it "for strategic reasons," given that its current infrastructure....isn't. As in, no roads. No nothing.
Trump doesn't think in terms of "defense," though.
He wants the rubies.
