The report found "substantial evidence" Gaetz engaged in rampant illicit drug use. The committee said it obtained text messages he sent where he referred to drugs as "party favors," "rolls" or "vitamins." It also said [bold]he created a fake email from his Capitol Hill office "for the purpose of purchasing marijuana."[/bold]
Too funny. I wonder if he had it delivered to Capitol Hill. He could be that stupid. He left an electronic trail, after all. I can picture him and Marge hotboxing somewhere in Rock Creek Park.

Rep. Matt Gaetz seeks restraining order to halt release of House Ethics report:
Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., sought a restraining order Monday against the House Ethics Committee in an effort to halt the panel's expected release of a final report summarizing its investigation into him.
The filing accuses the committee of an "unconstitutional" attempt "to exercise jurisdiction over a private citizen through the threatened release of an investigative report containing potentially defamatory allegations, in violation of the Committee’s own rules.”
Gaetz's lawyers say in the complaint, submitted in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, that the committee's intention to release the report about him "represents an unprecedented overreach that threatens fundamental constitutional rights and established procedural protections" after the panel acknowledged that "it lacks jurisdiction over former members."

These are state and local crimes. The Justice Department can only prosecute him for federal crimes (they tried to get him for trafficking across state lines but that didn't work). My guess is that state and local authorities were leery about prosecuting a sitting (and locally popular) member of Congress, but now that the Ethics Committee has done their work for them it might be a little easier.

by Anonymous | reply 66 | December 23, 2024 11:48 PM |
r66...
1. The DOJ failed to pursue justice despite overwhelming evidence and impeded the committee’s investigation
Perhaps most damning is the committee’s conclusion that the Department of Justice was an impediment to the investigation and failed the cause of justice by not charging Gaetz with any crimes. The report is unequivocally critical of the DOJ for failing to pursue charges against Gaetz in light of all the testimony and other evidence, and specifically speaks to the chilling effect the lack of action from DOJ had on the victims and witnesses:
[quote]Most of the women with whom the Committee spoke also gave statements to DOJ and urged the Committee to rely on those statements in lieu of requiring them to relive their experience. They were particularly concerned with providing additional testimony about a sitting congressman in light of DOJ’s lack of action on their prior testimony. DOJ refused to provide the relevant statements and other significant evidence to the Committee. DOJ cited internal policies about protecting uncharged subjects like Representative Gaetz, general concerns about how DOJ’s cooperation with the Committee may deter other victims in other matters, and various inapposite policies relating to congressional oversight of DOJ itself. DOJ’s initial deferral request and subsequent lack of cooperation with the Committee’s review caused significant delays in the investigation; those delays were compounded by Representative Gaetz’s obstructive efforts. The Committee has determined that its findings must be released without further impediments.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | December 23, 2024 11:58 PM |
Garland has been a travesty. Biden was so afraid of looking like he was weaponizing the DOJ he utterly failed to do anything about it. Dereliction of duty.

R25, in my past experiences with fundie types, I can confidently state that MANY of them are born into these groups, and they eventually are pressured into becoming born again by the time they hit their early teens.
They look at Christianity as a “get out of jail” card, & they basically are OK with their moral failures, because no matter what they do, Jesus will ALWAYS forgive them.
They eventually get caught up in a cycle of committing sins against others, followed by a brief period of asking Jesus for forgiveness, contrition, and then they go right back to screwing others over. Rinse & repeat millions of times.
Think about how you would behave if you believed you had carte blanch to a system where you only had to confess your sins to the Lord, and were still able to regularly attend church every week, without anyone being the wiser that you’re morally bankrupt? Then go one step further, and think about what a fucked up life you live secretly, and suddenly, a man even more morally bankrupt than you, runs for President, AND your ENTIRE church and denomination, backs this man for a shot at the Oval Office.
Frankly, Donald Trump is a relief to many of them, because they finally have true spiritual kinship with someone who they can genuinely relate to. That’s why so many of them back him without question.
For all intents and purposes, he’s one of them, and they feel seen, and understood by likeminded voters.
It’s easier to be a POS, when you’re no longer the worst of the worst, while looking at your fellow church goers who also support Trump, resting assured that you are no longer the only game/sinner in town.
Birds of a feather flock and vote together. It’s that simple.

Some people suggest that when Matt was in college he had sex with the housekeeper's 13 year old daughter and Nestor is his son.
Nestor Galvan deserves his own thread/ national news coverage. He's supposed to be Matt's ex-girlfriend's brother but didn't adopt him and didn't admit to him until it was politically advantageous. His father lives in Miami under various names and Nestor lived with him until he was 13. The Galvan/Galban/Galvez/ family FB pics show a working class existence. His mother supposedly died of breast cancer but there is no evidence she ever existed. No loving tributes on Mother's Day Instagram, No Maria Galban memorial 5k run for breast cancer. Nothing. Nestor's "aunt", the only one who could confirm the story suddenly repatriates to CUBA (!!!) and lives in big house. Some suspect that the "aunt" was the Gaetz housekeeper, Marbelina Matos and Maisbel Mendez the 13 year old daughter who Matt ended up living with later before Nestor's mother supposedly died.
Gaetz even acknowledged that after four years of living with him, Nestor had lived with his biological father in Miami for his junior year of high school. "Then he turned 18 [and] it was easier for him to just move back with me."
While some on social media claim that Nestor's mom never died in the first place.
What was largely unreported four years ago were social media reports that Galban's mother had not died of cancer, as Gaetz claimed, but was alive and in Cuba.
An X user named Jose (@josecanyousee) located a response from a post on a 2019 post on Galban's Facebook page that appears to be a response from his mother. In the pic, Galban is seen with Gaetz at a Trump Tower event, with a woman named Marbelina Matos commenting: "How beautiful. my youngest son, you look great. Kisses."

^^ You know what? For years it's been rumored about the sexual relationship with the roommate. It seems like DL'ers want to believe Gaetz is closeted and killed the roommate (probably accidentally) out of some kind of sexual guilt. I don't think so! Far more likely Gaetz is just plain ole' homophobic!
I suspect either the roommate confessed his love for Gaetz, (or lust), and Gaetz humiliated him causing him to commit suicide - OR - the roommate died in some type of gay hazing ritual and they had to cover it up.
Secretly gay men don't pay thousands of dollars to have sex with teenaged girls if they think they can secretly get away with it, they pay to have sex with teenage gay boys.
And that Nestor story sounds reasonable.
