Trump team’s plans to try to end birthright citizenship
I agree. Why should someone be granted birthright citizenship if their parents were just visiting or transiting the country, especially illegially?
I like the UK rule: "A child acquires citizenship at the age of 10. Citizenship is granted at birth only if at least one parent has permanent residence in the country."

Mom was an immigrant from Scotland and the Scots have nothing good to say about it.
you would never know the way it carries on about maga that IT is first generation American and two of its wives are illegal.

Requires amending the constitution, no? Not a law or executive order solution.

This would require an amendment to the constitution. It will not happen

Birthright citizenship was create to give Blacks citizenship rights and then other American minorities benefited from it as whites tried to deny them citizenship, although they were born and brought up here.
Repealing this amendment would easily push us right back to “only white Americans are citizens.”

Talk to Donald, OP.
[quote]President Trump, a critic of birthright citizenship, has been insisting on getting rid of such "chain migration" in immigration talks going on in Washington. But as The Daily Beast reported last year, Trump-branded condos in Miami, especially its Sunny Isles Beach area — dubbed "Little Russia" — are especially popular birth tourism bases for women who can afford the rent. Some Russian birth tourism outfits tout the Trump name in their packages. "There is no indication that Trump or the Trump Organization is profiting directly from birth tourism," NBC News says, though The Daily Beast notes that Trump's company "does benefit from Russian patronage of the nearby Trump International Beach Resort."

because we are not other countries. you can't move to Japan and become Japanese, but you can move to America and become American. It's our strength. It is how we've prospered and grown. we include anyone that wants to come here and make their best life which benefits all of us. so people who have permanent residence here, jobs, homes, lives, have a kid and it's not a citizen? makes no sense. if someone is here on vacation and drops the spawn, it does not become a citizen without a process.

Most of the world has birthright by blood (jus sanguinis). That includes all the countries in the European Union. Birthright based on "soil" or (jus soli) is found almost exclusively in North and South America.

Four of his five children are anchor babies. And while he's going on about "chain migration" how exactly did Melania's parents get legal status to live here?

They are not black or brown R16, therefore he will make exceptions.

His kids aren’t anchor babies. Awful as he is, there is no doubt of his citizenship. As with Barack Obama, an American’s children have American citizenship.

I know, r18. I just like calling them anchor babies to emphasize that they have immigrant mothers. I doubt the MAGAts would care if their last name wasn't Trump.

Melania's parents have no reason to be here, what skill or benefit have they brought to America exactly? I thought most MAGA only want the good ones who work and contribute to society?

With a massive budget deficit and an aging workforce, plus decades of low taxes, it’s an interesting moving to reduce the population. But we live in Idiocracy, so the stupids call the shots.

R22 The reality is that if we followed Europe's example, we WOULD end birthright citizenship. Not a single EU country has it.

R15 Yes, problem. Constitutional Amendments cannot be done just at the federal level of government. They must also be ratified by at least two thirds of the states. This is why the process is so rare.

R15 Excuse me, it's three fourths of the states -- not two thirds. That means a minimum of 38 states must ratify. Granted, the electoral map lately is uncomfortably red, but the GOP does not have 38 states under their control.
