Joe Manchin torches Democrats on the way out the door

As Joe Manchin prepares to leave Congress after nearly 15 years, the West Virginia senator — who left the Democratic Party and registered as an independent earlier this year — is further distancing himself from his former party, calling the Democratic brand “toxic.”

“The D-brand has been so maligned from the standpoint of, it’s just, it’s toxic,” Manchin told CNN’s Manu Raju in an interview airing Sunday, citing the shift as the reason why he left the party.

Adding that he no longer considers himself a Democrat “in the form of what Democratic Party has turned itself into,” Manchin — who has long been a pivotal swing vote in the Senate — said the party’s brand has become about telling people what they can and can’t do, blaming progressives for the change.

“They have basically expanded upon thinking, ‘Well, we want to protect you there, but we’re going to tell you how you should live your life from that far on,’” Manchin added.

[quote]Well, we want to protect you there, but we’re going to tell you how you should live your life from that far on

Is he talking about the Democrat's insane need to control women's bodies for them?

by Anonymousreply 4December 22, 2024 9:58 PM

But Manchin said Republicans don’t take responsibility for the national debt either, criticizing them further for lacking common sense on the issue of guns.

“They’re too extreme, it’s just common sense,” Manchin said. “I’m not going to ban you from buying it, but you’re going to have to show some responsibility.”

Manchin does not hold the Repugs to the same standard as he does the Dems.

Manchin can go fuck himself and he can take his sociopath daughter with him.

Democrats are telling people how to live, by what: repealing laws that take away autonomy and rights, banning and burning books, regressing school curriculum, rewriting history, shitting on the constitution… oh wait…

by Anonymousreply 7December 22, 2024 10:05 PM

Too many dems made excuses for him, and many still do. He doesn't give a fuck about anything but the power he got from being the holdout. He is largely to blame for Biden losing the election.

They should have tried to find someone 5% less moderate than him to run in West Virginia. If not, then they should have employed a 50-state strategy to minimize his power. It's ridiculous that he has been allowed to maintain his influence for as long as he has. And that's the fault of the democratic party and no one else.

by Anonymousreply 8December 22, 2024 10:15 PM

I think it is more the fault of Joe Manchin.

by Anonymousreply 9December 22, 2024 10:16 PM

He comes from the state that has the most junkies/drug addicts per capita. Nobody gives a shit what he thinks or what his white trailer park trash constituents think.

by Anonymousreply 10December 22, 2024 10:19 PM

He knows that, r7. He's just a bad-faith liar who doesn't give a fuck about anyone else. I can't wait for him to fade into obscurity.

by Anonymousreply 11December 22, 2024 10:49 PM

I believe he already has, r11.

by Anonymousreply 12December 22, 2024 10:51 PM

He's irrelevant. It must be a slow news day for anyone to bother reporting this.

by Anonymousreply 13December 22, 2024 11:19 PM

[quote]Manchin does not hold the Repugs to the same standard as he does the Dems.

No one does.

by Anonymousreply 14December 22, 2024 11:22 PM

Well I’m glad we have West Virginians lecturing New Yorkers, Bay Staters and Californians about how dumb we are. After all our economies and standard of living and educational levels are so low compared to the elite state of West Virginia.

West Virginia is full of inbreds including Manchin. Good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 16December 23, 2024 12:41 AM

Do STFU Joe. Now he can enjoy the yacht and mansion gifted him but his corporate donors

by Anonymousreply 17December 23, 2024 2:00 AM

He is a criminal Capitalist who protected his daughter.

Evil Christian Evangelical businessman.

by Anonymousreply 18December 23, 2024 2:02 AM

Hatchet-faced hillbilly grifter. He had a suit on appearing on Face The Nation today, but the camera people wisely panned down to show his cheap K-Mart loafers.

by Anonymousreply 19December 23, 2024 3:49 AM

I for one will miss the days of having a Senator from West Virginia who caucused with the Democrats. It’s not going to happen again in my lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 20December 23, 2024 3:56 AM

Good nutrition has given him some length of bone but he's not more than one generation from poor white trash, r19

by Anonymousreply 21December 23, 2024 10:35 AM

I love how Repukelicans confuse "Telling people what to do" with "Calling you out for being assholes and not MYOB"

by Anonymousreply 22December 23, 2024 11:11 AM

Oh, please.

by Anonymousreply 23December 23, 2024 12:55 PM

Above all Manchin has always been a tool for the coal industry and other fossil fuels. He ran as a Democrat in order to appear as a moderate and gain trust from some of the voters in order to get and stay elected. If he wasn't in the senate he would be a local used car salesman.

by Anonymousreply 24December 23, 2024 1:20 PM

and Not an exceptionally honest one either . . .

by Anonymousreply 25December 23, 2024 1:25 PM

My kingdom for a heavy wooden baseball bat!

by Anonymousreply 26December 23, 2024 1:34 PM

[quote]Above all Manchin has always been a tool for the coal industry and other fossil fuels.

Considering his constituency, could he be anything else?

by Anonymousreply 27December 23, 2024 1:42 PM

Much of what we're experiencing now is a backlash to the Democratic COVID response, the post-George Floyd response, #metoo, and the gender stuff. You cannot push a country that far or fast without some major blowback. We can go back and forth all day about whether the democratic response to those issues was morally right; however, politically, maybe not so much.

by Anonymousreply 28December 23, 2024 2:11 PM

Bitter party of Stupid, voila Joe Manchin

by Anonymousreply 29December 23, 2024 2:35 PM

He could advocate for his constituents and do everything in his power to help them, r27. He doesn't have to be spineless prostitute for any group with a checkbook. Expect more from politicians, asshole.

by Anonymousreply 30December 23, 2024 2:49 PM

Expect more from politicians?! As if they’re somehow better than mere mortals?! Here’s a newsflash. With the rare exception of the likes of Liz Cheney, they possess the same quality of self-preservation that informs the character of most of us.

by Anonymousreply 31December 23, 2024 3:34 PM

r20, he capitulated with his fellow capitalists. He was never a Democrat, with Democratic ideals.

Fuck him and his criminal daughter.

by Anonymousreply 32December 23, 2024 3:55 PM

Yet, without Manchin, R32, we would never have had control of the Senate the first two years of Biden’s term. And Biden wouldn’t have topped Trump’s number of confirmed judges without him, either. The last Democrat to be elected to the Senate from West Virginia in the foreseeable future. Unlike purists like you, I don’t make perfect the enemy of the (all things considered, relatively) good.

by Anonymousreply 33December 23, 2024 4:05 PM

I overall agree with your r33. We were hanging by a thread and a conservative senator from West Virginia who at least mostly voted with Democrats was better than what we have now.

But now that he's gone, I hope Democrats look seriously at running an authentic, blue collar, economic liberal as the Democratic candidate going forward, a redneck like Trae Crowder, the Liberal Redneck (who is actually from Tennessee, but somebody like him). Yes, any Democrat will have a big uphill battle there, but knowing that, don't just mindlessly run some dreary rich businessman pretending to give a shit about working class people he has long since lost all interest in. They've got plenty of Republicans for that shit.

by Anonymousreply 34December 23, 2024 5:47 PM

[quote]Much of what we're experiencing now is a backlash to the Democratic COVID response

What exactly was wrong with the Democratic COVID response, r28?

by Anonymousreply 35December 23, 2024 6:01 PM

Your only post, r28?

by Anonymousreply 36December 23, 2024 6:02 PM

The fact that Biden/Harris did not want Trump to run on his record. r35.

by Anonymousreply 37December 23, 2024 6:43 PM

You make no sense, r37.

by Anonymousreply 38December 23, 2024 7:14 PM

It is totally understandable that I do not make sense to you, r38.

by Anonymousreply 39December 23, 2024 8:02 PM

he's a dumb cunt

by Anonymousreply 40December 23, 2024 8:31 PM

But he was our dumb cunt.

R33. I see your point. Manchin had to walk a fine line being a Dem in redneck West Virginia. However, despite him helping Biden confirm judges, etc., there is no reason for Manchin to be torching the Dems on his way out. He's leaving. He could have stayed silent or given a farewell interview and wished his Dem colleagues well as a new administration takes over. But no, Manchin had to be an asshole for no reason and with no reelection to worry about again. Piece of shit, always was.

by Anonymousreply 44December 24, 2024 7:26 AM

With an increasing number of states seemingly out of reach for Democrats, I fear it could be a long time in the wilderness for Senate Democrats. So it may take some of us more time to appreciate just how fortunate we were to have had an imperfect Joe Manchin who could get elected as a Democrat from West Virginia.

by Anonymousreply 45December 24, 2024 8:07 AM

Funny how Manchin is a cunt and Sinema Is a dick.

by Anonymousreply 46December 24, 2024 8:56 AM

R28 Agreed. And that says A LOT about us. We were idiots to assume this country had a modicum of morality.

I'm done. I'm just waiting for the asteroid OR tsunami OR big-ass locusts wearing crowns with man faces.
