Woman set on fire and burned alive on NYC Subway

From the NY Post: A sleeping subway rider burned to death on an F train in Coney Island Sunday morning after a madman threw a lit match onto her causing her to burst into flames police sources said.

NYPD officers responded to reports of a fire just before 7:30 a.m. at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station and found the woman engulfed in fire while sitting on an idling F train, police told The Post.

She was found with liquor bottles surrounding her, though it was not immediately clear if they played any part in the fire, sources said.

Investigators believe that the woman was sleeping when a man sitting across from her got up, walked by her and threw a match on her, engulfing her in fire, sources said.

Also, assuming the victim was homeless -- which seems likely, since she was asleep on the train -- MAGAs don't really give two fucks about her. They'd be happy to round her up and ship her off to a camp, in fact. Don't kid yourselves.

by Anonymousreply 5December 22, 2024 9:40 PM

I just saw this on X. There is a video of the woman standing on the train on fire. The suspected was watching it before the police shooed him away. Can't get more fucked up than this situation. I think he poured an accelerant on her. Can someone someone really burst into flames from a match, even if they're covered with liquor?

Talk about living in a bubble...

by Anonymousreply 85December 23, 2024 2:06 AM

I don't see why dummies on this thread from either side are assuming that the "progressive" stance is to get defensive or ignore. Yes, we live in an ugly country where hundreds of thousands of people have no roof over their heads and many are subject to violence on the street---all true. That doesn't mean the mental health crisis isn't getting worse. I think the issue in this particular case is that trains and train stations could easily become sadistic no-go zones they have been at various other points in time, maybe even worse than they have ever been before, without some kind of unassailable citizen protection program. I don't care if they're cops as long as they're not allowed to arrest people for non-violent offenses. Lots of losers not wanting to backtrack on their "defund the police" commitments they made back in 2020, despite being middle-class people who live in safe neighborhoods and can afford to take Uber everywhere. Of course this is all short-term talk---what we really need us universal housing and to bring back mental hospitals.

What "joke?" It'll be pretty funny if right-wingers pretend to care about this, since they're very clear in their support for massive levels of homelessness over price controls on housing. Most Lefties are not pro-illegal immigration---it's a particular subsection of neoliberals who brand themselves as thought leaders who engage in the "immigrants are magical and they need to do jobs other humans don't want to do" narrative. Not all "Left-wing" people jumped on the highly performative and fleeting Defund the Police bandwagon. I'm an actual communist and have been for over 20 years---some "socialists" were involved in this campaigning, and some were merely agitating for the police to be held accountable for their thuggery.

A "disaster?" I'm a Marxist, but I'll approach this from the standpoint of social democrat who knows capitalism isn't going anywhere. A disaster in what way? And what do you think of the market currently? I Hoe far away is it from being a disaster?

by Anonymousreply 134December 23, 2024 7:19 PM

It’s funny that the media won’t mention this woman was homeless when it would be in the headline had she committed a crime. The Post wants to scare the Real Housewives of Park Slope.

[quote] Price controls on housing would be a disaster but okay...

20 years ago, economist said that NY's rent control was keeping prices high. NY completely changed the laws around rent control so it's very difficult to keep it going past one generation. And prices in NY are STILL crazy high. Taking thousands of apartments off rent control did nothing to lower the prices.

So spare me the "price controls on housing would be a disaster" BS

The immigrant arsonist arrived here in 2018 under team trump.

The victim was 29, she wasn't homeless and had a Phd. She worked with fiber crafts.

I know MAGA wants to make more of this but the facts are that NO ONE WILL FIX THE BORDER!!!! Republicans will fucking hurumph about this shit until their cunts bleed but they do not want to fix it since it's all they have to scare the public and blame everything on the Democrats and the fucking Democrats have got to fucking man up and hit back against this harder. Taking the high road has destroyed us. The reality is that the administration has deported more illegal immigrants than trump.

If you keep getting suckered by the border nonsense, you have a rude awakening coming. They are using this shit to justify a goddamn theocratic nation and you're all falling for it. Maybe you should all be paying better attention to the atrocities your American born neighbors have been up to because they behead babies, pay 17 year olds for sex and will only marry single women with kids so they can molest them.

Price control don't work. New York has a housing crisis because it doesn't build housing. Price controls would simply make the issue worse. Rent control exacerbates the high price of housing but it isn't the biggest cause. The biggest cause is lack of supply. This is why rents in Austin, Texas are declining even though record numbers of people are moving in. They build housing at crazy rates. Chicago, NYC, San Francisco, LA, etc. do not.

by Anonymousreply 139December 23, 2024 7:40 PM

R137 oh shit. She wasn’t homeless. Apologies for spreading misinformation. I got that from someone else on this site. And it’s seemed to make sense as homeless people are the only people I have ever seen completely knocked out on the train like that. Like sleep beyond cat napping to realize someone is pouring liquor on them. So sad.

Per the Washington Post (within the past hour):

[quote]Gulotta said there was “no interaction” between the suspect and the victim, and that the woman was “motionless” before the attack. Police said the two probably did not know each other. It was not clear why the woman was set on fire, authorities said, and they did not know her identity.

[quote] Price control don't work. New York has a housing crisis because it doesn't build housing. Price controls would simply make the issue worse.

Keeping housing stock fixed and seeing what the reduction in rent control does to rents seems like the perfect experiment set up.

NY kept housing stock relatively fixed and severely cut rent control. Rents went up dramatically, now down as economists predicted they should.

It's actually NOT what Dems did because Roe V Wade was already the law of the land. No one, not even the GOP, thought SCOTUS would end Roe v Wade altogether. In fact, by the time we all realized it, Dems didn't have enough power to codify it.

r147 No it wasn't. It was never codified into law. It had been standing on shaky ground from the start. The Dems had opportunities to codify it when there was a super majority. They just never did. But they kept running on it as a dangling carrot issue for their constituents. They're just as culpable. It was able getting votes to get into or remain in power, not actually doing something for the benefit of the people. It's the exact same thing Republicans have been doing with illegal immigration.

Roe v Wade was the standard for 49 years. Dems (stupidly) didn't think it would ever fall. It wasn't something that Dems even ran on so the comparison is specious.

Dems have rarely been in the supermajority but when they had they had other things to worry about--stimulus to keep the country's economy moving, getting us our of deep recession, Obamacare, etc.

It's silly when people say: Dems should have done it when they had a supermajority!! Dems did lots of things in the 150 days they had as a supermajority under Obama--codifying a 49 year standard that didn't look like it would fall wasn't even on the list.

Pathetically, the Dems ran on it this time, and lost. Women don't seem to care

"Socialism" gets a worse rap these days, because of AIC and Antifa, lol. But, I describe myself as both as well as a Communist, depending on the context---I am a Marxist, ideologically belong to various US socialist orgs (sadly, they've all been on life support for the last 40 years), and can also be called a communist for reasons too esoteric and boring to go into for DL.

by Anonymousreply 170December 24, 2024 12:26 AM

by Anonymousreply 171December 24, 2024 12:32 AM

R153 Mao I disagree. I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. Passing legislation isn’t just an easy process. Roe v. Wade has been settled since the 70s. Not codifying 5 decade established law isn’t the same as the same as not taking action on the present illegal immigration issue. And we all know the first 2 decades after its ruling, codifying it would have been political suicide because America is mad religious.

by Anonymousreply 172December 24, 2024 12:34 AM

For those of you unfamiliar - it's very dark until you go through tunnels then the lights turn on. Well in one of these tunnels I happened to notice he was fast asleep. Also, as I was sobering up, he was not nearly as cute as I thought he was. When my stop came, I got up and left him sleeping. Who knows what happened to the poor guy.

Yes, lots of trigger and trap laws in conservative states.

There was no real demand to codify Roe because we were satisfied with the SCOTUS’s ruling. Dems knew very well, if Roe were codified when they had a supermajority, it would just be repealed when the GOP had a supermajority (and until then the GOP would use it to fundraise).

Of course. With the exception of New Mexico, i think it is, all the most dangerous states in the USA are red states.

But reality is irrelevant to the little rightwing culture warriors like thread starter Defacto. They know that blue states are safer, so every time a crime happens in a blue state, theyll run to social media or a forum with it. “See, look what just happened. Blue state! Liberals coddle the blacks!”

It’s no different from christofascists pointing out every molestation of a boy by a man and then arguing “homos are pedos,” when molestation by heterosexuals is much more prevalent.

by Anonymousreply 186December 24, 2024 5:47 AM

r186 did you check under your bed for Defacto?

by Anonymousreply 187December 24, 2024 5:58 AM

The "It's Defacto" troll strikes again. Follow the thread idiot. The topic is NY state vs. Florida. NY State has a higher violent crime rate than Florida.

[quote] They know that blue states are safer

New Mexico, a blue state, has the highest rate of violent crime. California and Colorado are also in the top 10. Not a state, but the very blue District of Colombia has the highest violent crime rate of all.

However, States don't commit crime, people do. Violent crime is all about demographics. See FBI statistics.

The only safe option for New Yorkers is to play crazy when getting on the subway. Absolutely no one with fuck with you if they think you're off.

Rob Stapleton, a NY native, had a whole instruction manual included in his stand-up routine on how to pull this off (seen at the 3:00 mark). Hopefully this tactic saves lives.
