Classy Lesbians from Today and Yesterday ... Tell Lana

Name famous lesbians you admire.

by Anonymousreply 84December 25, 2024 9:41 AM

I'll start.

Jodie Foster. I just LOVE to listen to her during interviews; so humble and ARTICULATE! I love it.

I just went down a rabbit hole of early 20th century lesbian writers and heiresses the other night. There are SO many - some I've heard of because they are famous writers, but a lot of them I had not.

Natalie Clifford Barney fucked a lot of them - you start there and there are links to so many prominent rich lesbian artists/writers/ etc.

I guess having inherited wealth was probably one of the only ways to avoid marriage and being tied to a man. Then again, most lower class and middle class people's lives are never written about either.

R1 have you heard her speak French? Absolutely gorgeous.

Eleanor Roosevelt Roosevelt.

by Anonymousreply 12December 22, 2024 8:05 PM

Jodie was a rich girl, she had the best teachers.

R14, I've read up exhaustively on the life of Louise Brooks--the Barry Paris bio is a must-read--and believe she was truly straight. She may have had a lesbian encounter or two, but her basic and overwhelming orientation appears to have been straight. She is fun to consider, though.

by Anonymousreply 16December 22, 2024 8:30 PM

Garbo.

by Anonymousreply 17December 22, 2024 8:31 PM

What the fuck is this pushy OP, prancing around acting like she's curating an exhibit?

Is this a new cunt game here or a familiar persona taking things in a particularly unpleasant direction?

by Anonymousreply 18December 22, 2024 8:31 PM

Jodie seems like an icy cold bitch. Not a fan.

by Anonymousreply 19December 22, 2024 8:34 PM

"Sylvia Scarlett" (1935)

r19 Might just be a little shy. Scorpios tend to run that way and are notoriously hard-to-read people. Even when she came "out", you could tell she was very uncomfortable with how she might be perceived.

R21, you could be right. Thanks for the perspective.

I do think she is truly smart and beautiful. Her child-actor performances in Taxi Driver and The Little Girl Who Lived Down the Lane blew me away.

Jodie's WV twang in SOTL was surprisingly effective. She executed that accent with just the right nuance. When the movie was released, I was in my early 20s, and a woman peer of mine commented that Foster looked "like dog shit." I remember how shocked I was, because Foster's beauty in that movie almost startled me. She looked exactly as I wished I could (and did not). She has aged exceptionally well, especially for a blond who at one time smoked.

LENA HORNE

Oh, yes, R28! Forgot about her! Captivating, both physically and otherwise. Saw her in concert back in 1986. Wowza! as we said back then.

by Anonymousreply 29December 22, 2024 9:49 PM

r28 The sophisticated and soulful, Ms. Lena Horne! Didn't know that about her. Interesting.

by Anonymousreply 30December 22, 2024 10:14 PM

r27 What everyone else saw was an amazing performance by a stellar lady.

by Anonymousreply 38December 22, 2024 10:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 39December 22, 2024 10:37 PM

Thanks for the recommendation, r16! In my cart. It's always great to learn about our history in film (particularly). Back in the pre-Code days, the world was more accepting of us.

by Anonymousreply 45December 22, 2024 11:57 PM

I don't know how "classy" druggie Lauren Hutton is, but she's definitely tasted the lesbian experience, probably for 45+ years. Even David Ehrenstein agreed. GREAT MODEL, lousy actress. Rumor had it that now retired Hutton was going to come out several years ago, didn't happen (yet).

I'll see if I can't find out who she is.

by Anonymousreply 51December 23, 2024 1:59 AM

OK, it's Brandi Carlile. Is she a lesbian?

by Anonymousreply 52December 23, 2024 2:01 AM

R47, I love kd lang, but she’s hardly one of the best singers ever.

by Anonymousreply 53December 23, 2024 2:03 AM

^ That’s Billie Holiday, not Lena Horne, R58. Though Billie should be on this list too.

by Anonymousreply 59December 23, 2024 2:15 PM

Jodie Foster’s accent was atrocious in “Elysium”. Notably bad, in the what-the-fuck-was-she-thinking bad. It was dubbed in some parts.

by Anonymousreply 60December 23, 2024 2:23 PM

Leslie Gore.

by Anonymousreply 61December 23, 2024 4:03 PM

I'd have to say Miss Nancy Kulp. The whole time she ate my snatch, she stuck her pinky out. Now that's [italic]class.[/italic]

by Anonymousreply 62December 23, 2024 4:39 PM

Did someone actually ask if Brandi Carlisle was a lesbian?

Was Liberace gay? Rip Taylor?

by Anonymousreply 63December 23, 2024 5:24 PM

Wilma and Betty.

by Anonymousreply 64December 23, 2024 5:38 PM

Roy O'Donnell. I loved watching Roy's show in the late 90s.

Roy was obsessed with Tammy Cruise back then.

Roy has had many obsessions.

by Anonymousreply 65December 23, 2024 6:04 PM

Leslie Jones

by Anonymousreply 66December 23, 2024 9:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 75December 24, 2024 2:26 AM

R48 R49 Both bi. Like a lot of women mentioned here.

by Anonymousreply 76December 24, 2024 3:42 PM

Why, R76? Are you threatened?

by Anonymousreply 77December 24, 2024 4:58 PM

I don’t know that Tallulah Bankhead was “bi” so much as she would shove anything inside of her - animal, vegetable, or mineral.

by Anonymousreply 78December 24, 2024 5:04 PM

Melissa Etheridge

by Anonymousreply 79December 24, 2024 5:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 80December 24, 2024 5:36 PM

R77 What?

The why was she blackliisted, R83?
