I just watched Meet Me In St. Louis for the first time,

I feel so gay, I may just vaporize into a puff of cotton candy.

Judy’s bangs. Wtf?

So many dresses that reminded me of Carol Burnett’s skit Went With the Wind.

The pleading to stay in St. Louis instead of making everybody move to NY. Was it not a swamp then?

A few good songs.

That is my review.

Minnelli was so detail oriented MMISL can be a bit much.

by Anonymousreply 1December 22, 2024 9:32 AM

Hated those bangs.

by Anonymousreply 2December 22, 2024 9:33 AM

That's wild. I just watched MMISL like three days ago for the first time. It's in the air!

I was bored. It was charming to have in the background while I putzed around.

Too sweet? Too sour? Too thick!

by Anonymousreply 4December 22, 2024 10:15 AM

OP, maybe Home Alone is more to your tastes.

by Anonymousreply 5December 22, 2024 10:27 AM

I found a grand approximation of Le Judy’s snood from the “HYAMLC” number to wear to our city’s holiday light arboretum and was told throughout the evening how I dazzled!

Why are the children destroying private property and making a bonfire out of it on Halloween? When did that tradition stop?

by Anonymousreply 7December 22, 2024 9:24 PM

The Halloween segment in the movie literally derails the entire movie. It’s dark and shitty.

by Anonymousreply 8December 22, 2024 9:54 PM

R2 I agree. Makes her look like a fucking Shetland pony

I grew up in the 70's/80's and the suburbs of Boston were still doing that. But, in my town, we did it for the 4th of July, the crap was donated--furniture, old wood from construction projects, and just a little thievery--the bonfire was on a ball fueld, and the fire deoartment notified ahead of time by an adult stuck in eternal childhood who thought a bonfire some significant rite of passage that made boys into men. Even as a kid, I thought it was fucking stupid.

The Protestants in Northern Ireland do this around the time of their Orange Order marches in the summer.

by Anonymousreply 12December 22, 2024 11:27 PM

The only thing I like about this movie is when Tootie demolishes the snow family, revealing her murderous fury towards her parents.

I have it on the DVR, and intend to watch it soon.

It's been on the back burner of my to-do list ever since 'Lovecraft Country' (2020).

I was drunk last night, Dear Mother!!!

OP here - have to agree about the Halloween scene. That whole section was just so damn odd, if any little shit rang my doorbell and threw flour at me, they would meet the business end of a rusty shove.

The red dress at the end was lovely. Perhaps the blue number with all the little strings of what looked to be mothballs was just setting up the good dress.

Did you see the size of the cake slices that were being served up? No wonder Judy almost passed out when Rose was tightening her corset.

Lastly, John Truitt was a real dud. Made it difficult to be excited about the romance plot.

by Anonymousreply 17December 23, 2024 6:38 AM

Frankly I thought that was Judy’s most attractive hairstyle ever. She needed long hair.

by Anonymousreply 18December 23, 2024 7:56 AM

They were living in the Place streets next to Forest Park which was the wealthy area of St. Louis. In the movie…in real life the author lived in a nice but much plainer area.

Gay? Gay? What are you talking about?

Why was the little girl called “Tootie”?

Did she have a problem with flatulence? Like, did she “toot” too much?

by Anonymousreply 21December 23, 2024 9:33 AM

Some comments have reminded me of how much I hated the character Tootie in the movie. Overall, I wasnt a fan of Margaret O’Brien. Her acting irked me.

[quote]Overall, I wasnt a fan of Margaret O’Brien. Her acting irked me.

I tried to watch Little Women over the weekend on TCM and she was just insufferable. But her mugging kind of works for Tootie. I also recognized Agnes as a little know it all girl on the Bells of St. Mary's.

This movie has grown on me. Like OP, the first time I watched it & I couldn't figure what all the fuss was about it. But in these challenging times, this little slice of life movie just seems like the anecdote to more troubled and cynical times. Though I agree, the fuss over John Truitt seems misplaced, though given the other girls in the Trolley number (and what an idiot Warren Sheffield is), I guess their options were limited.

Already two other threads, OP.

Now that I am old, Father, ("Mr. Alonzo Smith") is a silver fox. When he comes down the stairs and trips on a roller skate, to the dinner that is held an hour early, he has AMPLE VPL and balls. Snaking down his leg. I couldn't quite grab the frame where its really big moundage.

I asked Chat GPT about the Smiths telephone. It replied the family is upper end of upper middle class or lower end of wealthy.

"Installing and maintaining a telephone could cost $50–$100 annually, equivalent to several thousand dollars today when adjusted for inflation."

oh my mistake. father insists dinner is maintained at the usual hour

by Anonymousreply 26December 24, 2024 1:33 PM

Yes, VPL and moundage!

by Anonymousreply 27December 24, 2024 2:01 PM

OP doesn't understand the level of American culture reached by St. Louis in 1904. The sense of "fly-over" didn't exist and the last Indian had been eradicated in Forest Park in 1902!

by Anonymousreply 28December 24, 2024 2:18 PM

I love the bust of Beyoncé behind Mr Smith-nice touch.

by Anonymousreply 29December 24, 2024 3:46 PM

It’s on again-what’s the tradition of throwing flour in your neighbor’s face?

by Anonymousreply 30December 24, 2024 6:15 PM

R30 We did similar things as kids in the 1980s. Not flour in the face but we threw corn at people's houses, "soaped" their windows and strung TP in/on their trees. General harmless/low level hooliganism/vandalism for young kids near Halloween.

by Anonymousreply 31December 24, 2024 7:18 PM

Not the same think dumbass r31
