Is EMDR Bullshit?

In therapy with a specific practitioner for a year and a half, with talk therapy as the modality. I am stuck on a specific issue revolving around a natural disaster I experienced back in 2021. (I'm okay, but traumatized and shrink sees it as PTSD, a term I see thrown around for a lot of stuff and which I reserve for first responders and combat veterans . . ). We started EMDR a couple weeks ago: We meet on line, so I follow a colored ball that moves across my phone screen at varying speed. IYKYK. WE pause and discuss bady sensations, etc. To me, it seems disjointed and all over the place. And silly, even. BUT I have decided to go along, do the 'work', and give it a chance --- for six to eight sessions. I can't help but think it's bullshit right now. Any thougjts?

Someone I know said it did them a great deal of good, but I can see how the concept seems a bit 'woo woo'.

I’ve read it works.

Keep going. Give yourself some time in order to see if it works.

It’s a method used to desensitize you, somewhat. As a final result, that’s exactly what all therapy comes down to. You can desensitize in various ways, & this is one of them.

Good luck, OP.

If it’s not working for you, it’s not working for you.

Have you tried diffusing your distressing flashbacks by imagining Liza Minnelli recounting them to Larry King?

No therapy works for everyone.

What kind if natural disaster?

People asking for help on Datalounge have a duty to entertain us.

I will also say I don’t appreciate your tossing around obscure acronyms excused by another (IYKYK). Quite inconsiderate to the peanut gallery.

You have not given it enough time yet to decide if it is helpful or not. See it through.

Is your therapist qualified to have you try psilocybin or MDMA? There is some very promising, early data showing either of those treatments can cause dramatic improvements for those suffering from PTSD.

OP can no longer get hard, R5.

It’s indeed, a natural disaster!

by Anonymousreply 8December 21, 2024 2:04 PM

The natural disaster was a hurricane and the use of IYKYK = If You Know, You Kniow was meant to capture the attention of those who have experienced this kind of treatment and who are therefore qualified to opine on whether they think it helped or not.

by Anonymousreply 9December 21, 2024 2:13 PM

OP? Don't move to Florida!

by Anonymousreply 10December 21, 2024 2:15 PM

Sir, this is Datalounge.

We are all qualified to opine.

by Anonymousreply 11December 21, 2024 2:17 PM

I know people who have found it helpful, OP. It was a "process" though and not something that they seemed to find any quick relief with. I hope it helps you, too.

More!

OP, if you revisit your education you may notice some courses felt like a waste of time, but turned out to be really helpful at a later date.

Add this one to your toolbox and keep trudging.

by Anonymousreply 14December 21, 2024 2:36 PM

I think it's total bullshit

by Anonymousreply 15December 22, 2024 2:45 AM

My therapist recently suggested I try it too OP. I’ve been skeptical but there is a growing body of research supporting it as an effective therapy, and FWIW she said she has observed positive changes in her other clients who have tried it.

by Anonymousreply 16December 23, 2024 2:28 AM

Therapy is a scam for women.

by Anonymousreply 17December 23, 2024 2:44 AM

No, OP, it works. I tried it, and it worked for me. There is ample evidence that I am not an anomaly.

by Anonymousreply 18December 23, 2024 2:57 AM

I tried it and it did nothing. No harm, but no benefit, either.
