I don't understand why we, as a moviemaking and moviegoing public, are so ball-and-chained to "pre-awareness IP" that we have these endless culture war skirmishes over whether the next James Bond should represent this or that demographic. Why not just say to hell with James Bond and produce something totally new?
The character is tired, a throwback to another era that is dead and buried, and frankly, I'm likelier to see a spy film that does *not* involve any character named James Bond. Ditto Jack Ryan.

Kennedy? Really? People actually think Kennedy? That's some desperate horseshit. And when you think about it, we don't need a gay president to "validate" ourselves or any of that shit. The truth is, if there was a gay president, it was probably James Buchanan, and he absolutely sucked. We're gay. It's fine, it's beyond fine. We don't need to invent awesome gay people in history. It makes absolutely no difference to our lives.

[quote]it bombed because the main character was woman spy.
Alias on ABC was quite the hit for a while. I don't think the public has any problem with a female spy.
They have a problem with taking characters that are more or less "set in stone" and "re-imagining" them. Doctor Who for example has the advantage that the Doctor can be reincarnated at any time. I don't think people really cared if the Doctor was a woman or black, or whatever.
James Bond is James Bond though (and has written source material to back up the character).
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 21, 2024 12:50 AM |
People cared that Doctor Who was a woman. They didn't like it. It changed the dynamic, for really no good reason but somebody wanted to make a silly statement.
In general, I don't think people mind a female spy at all, or actual heroines, but just make that the story and don't pretend to do some silly update for the purposes of saying, SEEE??? James Bond can be a woman too, y'all. Fuck off with that nonsense. It doesn't accomplish anything and doesn't make you some glorious feminist hero. Just do your own story and don't be stupid about it.

Instead of rewriting established IP, why not write your own damn stuff.
I don't have a problem with a black woman captain on Star Trek. I have a huge problem making the black human woman Spock's adopted sister.
We don't need a gay, non-white, or woman Bond. Let Bond be Bond.
If you want a gay, non-white, or woman spy, write script for one. If you don't want to watch a straight, white, male Bond, then don't watch the movie and they'll stop making them if enough people aren't interested.

There's a reason the name is JAMES Bond. People need to realize that not everything has to automatically be equal between the sexes. What would be the use in making a remake of Mrs. Marple with a male in the role? Just make a new movie about a male amateur crime detective whose name was not Marple. What's so hard about that? As far as James Bond goes, why can't they just devise a new British Secret Service agent that is a woman whose name is not Bond?

R35 a black Bond is more palatable because, even though it’s not exactly true— because we like to think our race is independent of our personality. But your race can shape your personality. However, making Bond gay contradicts such a core tenet of the character’s personality that it cannot be forgiven. Bond is a pussy hound womanizer. There is no gay male equivalent. Yes there can be a stunning, slutty gay male Casanova but it manifests differently, thus the personality much differently, because of the sexual politics between men and women. To make Bond a woman is to essentially not make him Bond. Masculinity is to linked to it.

by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 21, 2024 1:45 PM |
Assuming the new series is set in the present there would be no problem with a black Bond, because one assumes there are black spies nowadays. The problem with Idris Elba is that he's too old now. Bonds have been getting older: we need to go back to an under-40. Under 35 would be even better.
We know for sure there were always gay spies (Burgess and Blunt, for starters), and it's an interesting set of complexities to have a person who starts life pretending they're not gay, and then goes on to pretend they're not a spy, or in some cases, not a double agent. That character is not Bond, but it would make an interesting movie, or an interesting new character to have as a foil for him.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 21, 2024 1:54 PM |
I think a female Bond-like character might be interesting. Bond-like in the sense of being ultra confident and in control in any situation, including social ones. It would be better than the female spy movies and TV shows that pretend a 115 pound woman can beat the crap out of a trained adult male (Canary Black or Designated Survivor). I’m embarrassed that I watched Canary Black. It’s awful in multiple ways, but Beckinsale runs like the kid who was always picked last in gym or Shia LaBeouf. The ridiculous platform shoes she wears in her sixth decade probably didn’t help. But she is very uncoordinated.
But I agree with R48. You can’t just switch the gender or sexual orientation of the specific James Bond character.

Barbara has the right idea to push back against Amazon's algorithm-driven plans for the franchise. Look at how Disney treats Star Wars -- constantly pumping out terrible TV shows that flop and announcing films that will never be made. Giving Amazon what it wants will wreck the franchise, and Barbara seems to realize this.
But the James Bond character is kind of a relic from a bygone era. And there's a new spy show or film released about every week, which has reduced the novelty of the character and franchise. Maybe it's time to let it rest for a while. Casting a non-white person as Bond could work, but casting an openly gay actor probably wouldn't.

R63 is one of several voices on this thread who seem to be assuming there is a chance Bond will be a gay character. Have I missed something? The thread heading says "gay or nonwhite ACTOR", and as far as I know Broccoli has not said anything about making the character gay.
Jonathon Bailey has already played a number of straight characters that were designed to appeal to women (and emphatically DID). Why should his Bond be any different?
For years people on these threads have been whingeing that gay actors can't get leading man roles because women would repudiate them, and now that's been shown to be untrue DL itself seems to be saying that a gay actor=a gay character.
