I work with a lot of people who suffer from mental illness and trauma. Today a client told me she hasn't listened to a Christmas song in 12 years. She said they all depress her and upset her too much. I asked her what about some of the more uplifting or positive ones like Grandma Got Run Over or Rocking Around. She said it didn't matter. I told her about Kacey Musgraves Christmas Always Makes Me Cry. JFC.
12 Years Without a Christmas Song

Is this the opening scene in your incipient Hallmark Christmas screenplay, OP?

Try associating the holiday with a special, uplifting song, and making it an annual tradition.
It isn't Christmas season until I hear José Feliciano singing "Feliz Navidad." Watching Darlene Love perform "Baby Please Come Home" seals the deal!

I actually only listen to Christmas when forced.

Is she a shut-in, OP?
You can't leave the house without hearing a Christmas song this time of year.

Christmas is not the happiest time of year for everyone. My family was a shitshow. I never had a happy Christmas until I was 40 and met people who loved me and wanted to share the holidays.

Pity. Some people don't want to be happy.
Darlene does. At 83.

hear, hear
Their trauma becomes their identity. They don't want to lose it.
Sad.

My favourite Christmas song is Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas- bt Judy Garland.
I prefer sad Christmas songs and the " church-y" ones
There is one song I associate with the holidays mostly post Christmas and that's Long December by Counting Crows. Its on constant replay during this time of the year. Its been a thing for me for years , as a 90s kid, this song makes me very nostalgic fpr simpler times

Do you think of HYAMLC as a sad song, R9? I have always thought of it as a hymn to hope.
It was meant to signal better times ahead as World War Two was coming to an end and with it the death and destruction and disruption caused by the war. The movie was released in 1944 when it was clear the Allies would win. “Next year our troubles will be far away.” “Faithful friends who were near to us will be dear to us once more.” And for a lot of people, at least in the US, we muddled through somehow.
But the original lyrics [italic]were[/italic] grim. Judy would have sounded like a monster singing “Have yourself a merry little Christmas. It may be your last. Next year we may all be living in the past” to six year old Margaret O’Brien. It was, uh, problematic. So they changed them.

OP, obviously she's just incredibly competitive about winning Whamageddon every yea, and this is her solutionr.

I'm probably the only person here who enjoys Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas.

Anyone wbo frequents DL for a while knows some people are deeply committed to their own misery.

Is it that hard to avoid a Christmas song?

"Uplifting"?

This broad has clearly never listened to “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella” and needs to broaden her horizons.
Different season, but I’d be curious whether she harbors the same resentments against DL fave Monster Mash as well.

How about a renaissance Spanish Christmas carol? I love this one, because of its snappy rhythm. I'd take it a thousand times over jingle bells or santa claus is coming to town.

Happiness is a choice, even with trauma and mental illness.

I like the Lennon one the best.
Last Christmas wasn't played for years in Australia, but it made a comeback and is now a staple.

It's been the Christmas number one for two years running in the UK. The deep love the British have for George Michael is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

You certainly have sophisticated musical tastes.

Don't let her listen to any of this OP. She'll kill herself.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 21, 2024 10:35 AM |
She sounds like a misery wallower, OP. Is she not on medication of any sort?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 21, 2024 2:40 PM |
OP likes to torment people in crisis for the holidays.
How sweet.

How can one be upset or depressed listening to Tracey's "Santa Baby"? My favorite version.
The song starts at 4.00
