There is another Oz film coming out in 2025

I fell down a rabbit hole of Oz adaptations yesterday and learned that a Soviet author, Alexander Volkov, wrote his own novel about Oz in 1939. The Emerald City of Oz changes several characters from L. Frank Baum's original novel (for instance, "Dorothy" becomes "Ellie," "Toto" becomes "Totoshka," and "Scarecrow" becomes "Bogeyman." A number of plot points are changed too. Interestingly enough, according to Wikipedia, "Volkov's version of Oz seems to be better known than Baum's in Russia, China, and the former East Germany." He wrote a series of Oz books, which have since been translated into English.

2025 will see a live-action adaptation of Volkov's novel, trailer in r1.

It actually looks pretty cool. Good FX and I like the character designs - different and yet familiar. I also like the idea that the tornado was sent by the Wicked Witch instead of just being a random weather occurrence that brings Dorothy to Oz. Id watch on Netflix!

Does anyone remember the animated version featuring the voice of Annie (Aileen Quinn?) I think the Witch had a patch over her eye in that one which was in the books too I believe.

Love that a book like Oz can inpsire so many different interpretations.

I agree, r2. I want to see it.

I also want to read the English translation of the original novel.

The GCI and set design are solid but the costumes are a bit hit and miss.

The actress who plays Dorothy seems much more endearing than Fairuza Balk.

Just what the world needs — another wizard of oz movie.

Bonus points — “brought to you by the people who invaded Ukraine for no apparent reason.”
