I don't really understand the demographic they're going for with this film. His young fans won't have even heard of Bob Dylan. I know two Dylan superfans and they've both said they're not interested in it as it's factually inaccurate, according to them. I'm mid-forties and couldn't name a Dylan song if my life depended on it.

Spot on. It's going to be yet ANOTHER flop R30. Chalamet's entire career has been one flop after the other with the exception of Wonka and Dune - both of which audiences would have flocked to see had Chalamet's role been played by anybody. Anybody at all. He had nothing to do with the success of either film. And on top of that he's disgustingly ugly with a flat ass.

R28, Please be assured that flaunting your ignorance of a cultural icon does not redound to your credit.
Because never having heard of, let alone heard, "The Times, They Are A-Changin"; "Like a Rolling Stone"; "Lay, Lady, Lay"; "Blowing in the Wind"; or "Mr. Tambourine Man" is to reveal yourself an utter MORON.
Have you heard of the 1960s and 1970s? Nixon? Vietnam? Kent State? Henry Kissinger? Peter, Paul, and Mary? Pete Seeger?
Do you even know what " Folk Music" is? Or "protest"?
We've established what you are. Now we're just finding your percentile.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 21, 2024 6:39 PM |
R36 I'm not American. All of those things you mentioned are things of American cultural importance, they don't necessarily mean anything to the rest of the world.
I know loads of music from the 60s and 70s, but Dylan isn't one of them. You also haven't done much to convince me that there's much of an audience for a Bob Dylan biopic among young people, who are the majority of cinema-goers. I can't imagine there are many 50 or 60 year olds chomping at the bit to go see a Timothée Chalamet film. Most people in that age range wouldn't even have heard of him.
Just like most people under 40 won't have ever heard of Bob Dylan.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 21, 2024 6:57 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 21, 2024 7:22 PM |
That, r38, is okay. At least you know of him. But I hope that you are able to understand his lyrics, both his social commentary and his romantic ones.
There's a reason Dylan won the Nobel Prize for Literature (more evidence of the unbelievable vacuum inside the head of r28).
R37, Nope, sorry, no can accept. Ignorance of popular culture, and I mean IMMENSELY INFLUENTIAL, NOT SOME TIK-TOK "PERSONALITY," is not an "excuse" for more recent generations. I know of silent films, yet I was born in 1949. Same with Big Band music, Mozart, Verdi, Jenny Lind (Swedish!), Kiri Te Kanawa, Maria Callas, Wagner, etc.
Oh, and r37? If you think the Vietnam Conflict was strictly American, you must never have heard of "France," "China," or "Communism," either. Meanwhile, you probably think Americans should be knowledgeable about the Austria-Hungarian Empire.

From the bottom of my heart, we need to stop NOT criticizing when Chalamet is bad and He is bad here. Stop riding his d*ck and judge him accordingly like yall judge every other actor. And someone in my screening literally walked out and muttered “is this a joke?” I hope he does not get an oscar nom because he just does not deserve it for this.

by Anonymous | reply 101 | December 23, 2024 2:14 PM |
We'll see, but I think the studio wildly miscalculated with this film. Boomers are avoiding it because they know it's not a factual representation of Dylan. And young people may avoid it because they are unfamiliar with Dylan and Timothee is not enough to get them interested. Middle aged people were not even born when Dylan was a success, so they have no nostalgia for him. Plus if it's seen as boring or a bad film, why would people go?
by Anonymous | reply 103 | December 23, 2024 3:49 PM |
R103, Much as I ranted about the 40-something poster here who knows not Dylan, there is something to be said for predicting a so-so Box Office for "ACU," to wit:
The Times, They Have Indeed Changed.
Whereas Queen and Freddie's anthems are still being played or sung at all kinds of sporting events, and Queen just recently ended a decade-long international series of concerts, thus contributing to the huge success of the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody"; and
Whereas Elvis is a permanent fixture in our cultural pantheon, maybe unto kitsch, but yet there, with Graceland still a major tourist attraction, thus contributing to the success of the movie "Elvis"; and
Whereas Rock and Roll is still popular....
Folk music, in particular the contemporary social commentary/protest style of Dylan, Baez, the Chad Mitchell Trio, Pete Seeger, and Phil Ochs, is no more. "I Ain't Marching Anymore"? Well, why should you? "Where Have All the Flowers Gone"? I don't know; paved into a parking lot? Whatever! "Waist Deep In the Big Muddy"? Is that, like, Coachella or something?
Even Bob Dylan isn't "Bob Dylan" anymore.
