Keith Olbermann: MSNBC can save itself. First Step: Fire Mika and Joe

What does MSNBC do now? After Trump accomplished the Undead thing and retook the White House? After Comcast announced plans to spin off the network (along with others) in such haste that its new company was named “SpinCo”? After Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski went on their show and welcomed our new insect overlords? After its audience vanished?

Nothing.

Stay the course. The audience is exhausted and needs a break. It’ll be back — and Resistier than ever. Suffer the ratings trough. I mean, obviously you have to fire Mr. and Mrs. Scared-Bro. However: Continue their banal but largely benign political coffee klatch show without them and their insistence we all join their MSNVichy. Nobody will remember they were ever there.

Plus, the next money is coming from more fervent opposition to MAGA, not less. Wasn’t the Scarborough disaster (60% of the demo audience gone in three days) instructive enough? Did you not notice CNN going from fact-based criticism of Trump’s madness to hours of cacophonous shouting, and sinking to whatever is the next level down from irrelevance? Did the quarter of a million canceled Washington Post subscriptions not tell you something? Or the exodus from Twitter/X?

What do you think happened to all these news consumers? That they were raptured?

They’re all still there waiting to spend their time and money at the only liberal candy store still open: yours. These other supposed bastions of journalism have left you a near monopoly. And MSNBC only exists today because the last time NBC was handed a near monopoly, your management ancestors said, “A hundred million in profits from Olbermann’s liberal show? I guess we’ll take it. If we have to.”

In the early years of this century, the great minds at GE (then NBC’s parent) were trying to go to the right of Fox by putting on Tucker Carlson, Michael Savage and Laura Ingraham. They were thus too busy to notice that I was putting on Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O’Donnell and Chris Hayes. While they were trying to steal Bill O’Reilly away from Fox or, failing that, to transform MSNBC into a literal prison-documentary channel, I kept Rachel from jumping to CNN by giving her $437 out of my own pocket. And the next thing the corporate masters knew, we’d spun them all off into their own shows and MSNBC was profiting a billion a year.

BTW, I’d like the $437 reimbursed, please.

Generation after generation of NBC Executive Idiots viewed politics as nothing more than a soda brand and believed there was some additional audience — undecided or right wing — that they could add to the present one if only they also offered a different flavor called “New MSNBC.” The new flavor invariably turns out to be turnip. Besides, that right wing ruled you out in 1996. Pursuing it results in only one thing: the Scarborough-ing of your present audience.

That doesn’t mean you can’t tweak stuff. Your primetime audience doesn’t want new faces; it wants comfort food — so refresh the menu and decor. Scuttle those daytime shows (which always existed solely to give NBC News execs something to stare at while they pretended to work) and replace them with the morning formula, only with different sets and different titles.

Try outsider, big personality hosts like Elie Mystal and Pablo Torre. You could even try for a truce with your prodigal anchor so he’ll be inside the tent peeing out for a change. And now you can finally do something I first suggested in 1998: Change the damn name of the network! Use the acronym “N.E.W.S.” Or “American News Network.” Or how about a nice, self-explanatory “F Trump TV”?

What all this will get you (besides the kind of profits only a monopoly can provide) are non-cash virtues like moral force and ethics and journalism and patriotism and liberty. You may now be the last line of defense for the free press and thus the future of representative government in this country. The bullies don’t stop hitting you because you’re nice to them. They stop hitting you when you knock them out cold.

MSNBC will never fire Joe and Mika.

They get the highest ratings on the entire network.

Also, Joe is the only credible conservative voice that they have.

by Anonymousreply 1December 18, 2024 1:30 PM

Yeah. I don’t foresee Mika & Joe going anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 2December 18, 2024 1:53 PM

Olberman fucked opportunist Katy Tur, then got bitter when she dumped him. He takes any opportunity to trash her, years later. Demonstrating poor judgment, and an inability to move on. Disregard.

by Anonymousreply 3December 18, 2024 2:01 PM
They get the highest ratings on the entire network.

Not any longer.

by Anonymousreply 4December 18, 2024 11:35 PM

^^Not since Jika made their pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago and kissed Trump's ass...or climbed up into it.

Since then, their ratings have tanked.

by Anonymousreply 5December 18, 2024 11:38 PM

What lie was told?

by Anonymousreply 6December 18, 2024 11:58 PM

R3 Isn’t he old enough to be her daddy. Lucky ho.

by Anonymousreply 7December 18, 2024 11:59 PM

Too late. People have finally seen that it is nothing but a propaganda machine. No one will ever trust it again, anyone with a brain anyway.

by Anonymousreply 8December 19, 2024 12:07 AM

MSNBC ratings still seem to be low but Fox claims to be getting an increase in viewers. They're calling it a surge in viewership- they lie all day long.

by Anonymousreply 9December 19, 2024 12:21 AM

Keith Olbermann's judgment has consistently been so terrible that I don't really care what he thinks. (But I don't watch MSNBC anyway.)

by Anonymousreply 10December 19, 2024 12:26 AM

I mean, he ain’t wrong.

by Anonymousreply 11December 19, 2024 12:37 AM

Mika is a narcissistic and a big phony. And a BIG joke.

by Anonymousreply 12December 19, 2024 1:24 AM
r9 = they lie all day long

Three quarters of a billion dollars worth.

by Anonymousreply 13December 19, 2024 1:29 AM

My partner listens to Olberman's podcast. I am embarrassed to admit, it is very entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 14December 19, 2024 1:31 AM

He's right!

by Anonymousreply 15December 19, 2024 1:33 AM

Why did Olbermann leave MSNBC?

by Anonymousreply 16December 19, 2024 1:39 AM

I thought he was fired. I will admit I did like his show.He trashed the people I hate and I think that’s lovely. Will look for his podcast.

by Anonymousreply 17December 19, 2024 1:56 AM

"More than a month after the November election, MSNBC’s primetime audience — which dropped by half after Donald Trump’s victory — has still not returned. "

"Either way, the numbers are stark. MSNBC’s total primetime audience has fallen a shocking 55% from November 4 through December 15, according to the latest Nielsen figures released on Tuesday."

"CNN has faced a similar drop, a 46.7% decrease, while Fox News has seen its primetime audience grow 10.7%, according to Nielsen."

I’ve never like Olberman, & I’m surprised Katy fucked around with him.

She must have been B O R E D.

by Anonymousreply 19December 19, 2024 1:58 AM

I still am in awe that Joe & Mika made the pilgrimage to MAL, ESPECIALLY after all of the shit Trump talked about Mika, & her plastic surgery bandages/stitches, back in 2016.

He made it sound like she had just gotten her facelift a few hours before meeting with him.

I wonder if the big guns at NBC forced them to show up over there this time around?

by Anonymousreply 20December 19, 2024 2:02 AM

Sounds like Katy got paid. Olbermann claims he paid for her rent and college loans?

by Anonymousreply 21December 19, 2024 2:22 AM

I will never know but I believe Joe is behind this and Mika had to go along because she is an empty vessel and is trying to spin this reconnecting bullshit. Joe owns the show.

by Anonymousreply 22December 19, 2024 2:25 AM

Katy's account

She was young, 23, he was a daddy figure, helped her, then when she came to NY he "offered her a place to stay". Reading between the lines, she was a star fucker looking for a leg up. He was a horn dog. In case you hadn't noticed, Katy has big boobs, a young 23 with a rack.

Recounting in later years, she claims she was HAUNTED by this connection.

He never misses an opportunity to trash her or crow over her troubles.

For GAWDS SAKE

Katy Turd was outed in court as working for Trump’s team. She can rot.

by Anonymousreply 24December 20, 2024 3:48 AM

Katy was a slut whore who slept with Keith Olbermann so she could move up the ranks at MSNBC.

She's as fucked in the head as her father/mother Bob/Zoey Tur.

I think everything Olberman says in that article makes sense. Provressives are depressed and exhausted and are understandably tuning out the news in general — it’s all bad, after all.

But once Trump is sworn in and egregious fuckups and ego clashes start happening in earnest, the audience will drift back, feeling ready to fight another day (or at least bitch about it). It’s just a question of waiting it out until spring.

by Anonymousreply 26December 20, 2024 4:28 AM

I think Keith was a good anchor for MSNBC. Now I can't remember why they fired him. Probably sexual harassment like O'Reilly, a sort of similar heavyweight on the right.

by Anonymousreply 27December 20, 2024 4:36 AM

R23, Katy’s rack is made of silicone.

by Anonymousreply 28December 20, 2024 3:06 PM

Olberman was fired because his a psycho besides being impossible to work with. Katy must have really earned her step up by sleeping with him.

by Anonymousreply 29December 20, 2024 3:08 PM

I love that he called them Mr. and Mrs. Scaredbros. The podcast is highly entertaining, he's had an amazing career, dishes dirt with receipts and bitchiness, and reads James Thurber short stories. He lived with Tur and Nuzzi ("we had rings and dogs and tattoos) and had 2 dates with a drunken Laura Ingraham, 1 a 7 course meal , 6 Martini's and a slab of beef or something. Fun times. He was also pen pal with Roald Dahl, since childhood. Not to mention all his sports stories which I often just skip. He's also lived in NY since the 80's so lots of celebrity fodder. I keep hoping for a LuPone or Stritch encounter at PJ Clarke's.

His takedowns of famous people are epic and always come with facts and proof. He often says something to the effect of, "wanting to be on TV is a form of mental illness"

by Anonymousreply 30December 20, 2024 3:49 PM

He wasn't fired from MSNBC, he left in 2011 to work for Al Gore's Current TV network (that failed).

Clearly, he's a prickly guy, outspoken and willing to speak truth to power even when it imperils his employment. He details numerous clashes with network executives over the years, from trashing (rightly) Phil Griffin and Chris Licht, to Rupert Murdoch (whom he sued over contract termination and won a multi-million dollar award). Add in the fact that at 65 (iirc) he's never been married and only had relationships within the industry and you can see why he has the reputation he has.

Nevertheless, he is a brilliant newsman with an impressive resume and communication skills. He says he's been in negotiations twice with MSNBC to come back since 2011, the latest being nixed surprisingly by Rachel Maddow. They should bring him and [italic]Countdown[/italic] back; he gets podcast numbers that rival anything they have on the air so clearly has and will bring a built in audience. And given his age, it's not like he wants to build a dynasty or even ascend the corporate ladder.

And he does a fabulous impersonation of Tom Brokaw.

by Anonymousreply 31December 20, 2024 4:14 PM

^Well said.

He was instrumental in Tur's career, paid her rent for a year after they broke up and helped write her book with only the promise of an acknowledgement which she agreed to and then didn't honor. He reads her texts as proof of the many lies she's told.

He didn't speak about Nuzzi until the NY Post contacted him and he wanted to get ahead of the story. I don't even remember any of the details but he credits her for his new found love of dogs.
