How exactly do prepaid phones work?

I don't understand the concept

by Anonymousreply 12December 19, 2024 5:25 AM

No contract, no ties, just cash and a dream,

Of minutes that dwindle, a prepaid scheme.

A burner, a brick, a plastic delight,

For calls on the fly, in the dead of the night.

Top-ups and codes, a digital dance,

To keep the connection, a fleeting chance.

The signal may drop, the battery may die,

But freedom's embrace, in a prepaid lie

You pay the phone and when your minutes run out it emits a mild electrical shock that stops only when you insert another quarter.

Freg adjusted the flickering fluorescent light in his cramped basement apartment, casting long shadows on the walls. The air was thick with the smell of stale instant noodles and unwashed laundry. A half-eaten bag of cheese puffs lay discarded on the floor next to a pile of empty energy drink cans. Tonight was a big night. Tonight, Freg would unleash chaos.

He cracked his knuckles and powered up his burner phone, a cheap, prepaid model he picked up at a gas station. Freg was no fool. He knew the risks of his online activities, and he wasn't about to let some pesky IP address lead the authorities to his door.

With a smirk, he logged onto the infamous message board, "The Cauldron." It was a cesspool of anonymous trolls, conspiracy theorists, and internet provocateurs, and Freg was their king. He typed in his usual handle, "ChaosBringer69," and surveyed the threads.

His eyes landed on a post about a local politician running for re-election. Perfect. Freg's fingers flew across the keypad, spewing out a torrent of vile insults, fabricated scandals, and thinly veiled threats. He watched with glee as his comments ignited a firestorm of controversy, users taking sides and tearing into each other with ferocious abandon.

Over the next few hours, Freg hopped from thread to thread, leaving a trail of digital destruction in his wake. He instigated arguments, spread misinformation, and reveled in the anonymity that his burner phone provided. It was a game to him, a way to exert power over others from the safety of his dingy basement.

As the night wore on, Freg's energy began to wane. He crushed another energy drink can and tossed it onto the growing pile. He glanced at the clock. 3:00 AM. Time to call it a night.

With a final flourish, he posted a cryptic message on The Cauldron's main page: "You can't catch me. I'm everywhere and nowhere. I am ChaosBringer69." Then, he snapped the burner phone in half, tossed it in the trash, and crawled into bed, a twisted smile plastered across his face. He drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the havoc he would wreak tomorrow.

Ohhh Chile’ the ghetto.

by Anonymousreply 4December 18, 2024 5:41 AM

OP, it's like a phone for placing collect calls, so the receiver of the call pays, not the phone holder...capiche?

by Anonymousreply 5December 18, 2024 5:52 AM

Now it’s 50 bucks a month for everything, but 20 years ago it seemed prepaid phones cost like a dollar a minute or message.

by Anonymousreply 6December 18, 2024 5:58 AM

I’ve never had a phone contract and I’m 36.

by Anonymousreply 7December 18, 2024 5:59 AM

Contracts are for the stupid, do you pay a set price for gas, gasoline, electricity, water? Why would you pay for something you will not use? I have prepaid and it all comes out automatically and I have rarely run out, I pay 25 per month for data, calls and texts are "free". I don't send 4000 pics a day so it works for me, most of the world, even western Europe have prepaid.

by Anonymousreply 8December 18, 2024 7:05 PM

Visible is only $25 a month including fees for unlimited text, calls, data and hotspot. The unlimited hotspot is great. No contract.

Those prepaid Tracfones are best purchased on QVC or HSN where you get a year's service plus a bunch of minutes, texts and some data included with the phone.

Tracfone is a good deal plus it's now part Verizon...or Verizon is part of it. I don't know who bought who(m).

I want to have a second cel phone "just in case" ... Can I get one without having to pay a monthly fee?

by Anonymousreply 11December 19, 2024 4:15 AM

My prepaid phone plan is $10 a month. It has talk and data (1 gb). It’s all I need. I use it on a iPhone 13. The phone has always been unlocked so I can use any phone plan I want.
