Israel to close embassy in Ireland over 'anti-Israel' policies

Israel will close its embassy in Dublin over "the extreme anti-Israel policies of the Irish government", its foreign minister has said.

Gideon Saar said the Republic of Ireland had crossed "every red line".

In a statement, he said Israel's ambassador to Dublin had been recalled in the past following what it called Ireland's "unilateral decision to recognise a Palestinian state".

He added that the decision followed Ireland's announcement of its support for South Africa's legal action against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing the country of "genocide".

[quote] Gideon Saar said the Republic of Ireland had crossed "every red line".

With a straight face?

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

by Anonymousreply 2December 16, 2024 1:24 AM

Fuck Israel

by Anonymousreply 3December 16, 2024 2:06 AM

Does Ireland have an embassy in Israel? Because if so I presume they'll be going home as well

by Anonymousreply 4December 16, 2024 8:00 PM

Aw, darn.

by Anonymousreply 5December 16, 2024 8:45 PM

Israel ought to learn a lesson from Ireland and resolve their goddamn decades long conflict with the Palestinians!

by Anonymousreply 6December 16, 2024 8:58 PM

“Unilateral” decision? Isn’t Ireland a sovereign country?

by Anonymousreply 7December 16, 2024 9:02 PM

More.

The whole thing is just a giant bad faith performance. Not a single person in the Israeli government believes that the Irish government hates Israel. A bunch of bullies trying to character assassinate a lovely country.

by Anonymousreply 9December 16, 2024 11:15 PM

Why ever would the Irish, a people invaded and colonized by foreigners and treated like third class citizens in their own country, support the Palestinians, a people invaded and colonized by foreigners and treated like third class citizens in their own country?

This must remain one of life’s great mysteries.

by Anonymousreply 10December 16, 2024 11:21 PM

R9, when you’re committing crimes against humanity, and someone calls you out for it while your hands are still dripping with blood, really all you’ve got is to assassinate the character of your critic.

by Anonymousreply 11December 16, 2024 11:23 PM

The proper response is, "Au revoir, you genocidal ethnic supremacist Jewish Nazis.

We'll have a toast to your farewell."

by Anonymousreply 12December 16, 2024 11:32 PM

I guess Anscher is at his weekly court-appointed psychiatric treatment, which would explain why we haven’t yet been told to go to Gaza because they love gays, or been called antisemites.

by Anonymousreply 13December 16, 2024 11:53 PM

Your bizarre obsession with this Anshcer character who hasn't been on DL in years is sad.

by Anonymousreply 14December 17, 2024 12:02 AM

Ireland still gave Israel top marks in Eurovision. This shows we can separate the people from their government...which Isreal obviously cannot do.

by Anonymousreply 22December 17, 2024 1:20 AM

R22, anyone who wants to see a sad, obsessed troll with a real mean streak should have a look at your posting history. You've been following me around for years, heckling and making death threats.

It was done as a PR stunt for domestic press cycles on Israel. That's why Israel dropped the news on a Sunday. Many countries don't have embassies in the Republic, either having a small consulate or referring Irish to their London embassy for visas and the like.

by Anonymousreply 24December 19, 2024 5:48 PM

R24, it's a strange, petty gesture. Ireland is a small country, but the Irish diaspora is huge, particularly in the United States. Does no one in the Israeli government think things through?

by Anonymousreply 25December 19, 2024 8:28 PM

Why would a country whose prime minister paid a condolence call on the German embassy after Hitler's suicide be considered anti-Israel?

by Anonymousreply 26December 19, 2024 8:45 PM

Israel’s days are numbered. Millennials and Gen Z are taking over and hate that country with a passion. Thanks Bibi, you corrupt asshole. No more welfare checks.

by Anonymousreply 27December 19, 2024 8:52 PM

Don’t worry, Israel will just invade Ireland after I’m done with Lebanon and Gaza

by Anonymousreply 28December 20, 2024 3:00 AM

Ireland was neutral in WW2, r26. You probably didn't know this but thousands of Irish men joined the UK armed forces and fought against the Nazis. Not my grandad (too anti-English). You're a piece of shit and you're acting in bad faith.

by Anonymousreply 29December 20, 2024 3:52 AM

It's always fun to see people wheel out the one fact they know about Irish political history, R26, one which no doubt outweighs all the covert assistance Ireland gave to the Allies during the war. Presumably we can also judge the political climate in today's United States by all the Jewish refugees they took in during the 1930s?

by Anonymousreply 30December 22, 2024 5:06 AM

The more important point is why Israel should dare to suggest that the recognition of a state of Palestine is somehow 'anti-Israeli' rather than a recognition of the inherent human rights of every Palestinian. Is this a tacit admission that Israel does not conceive of it ever being possible that it could coexist with any state of Palestine? In which case, if a 2-state solution is dead, a 1-state comprehensive peace settlement is all that remains. It is not Ireland's fault for making this clear.

by Anonymousreply 31December 22, 2024 5:09 AM

Meantime, since we now have expanded diplomatic relations with the Palestinian mission, it's nice of the Israeli government to free up a substantial piece of Dublin real estate. Ireland might be a small country but it's a full EU member and it has a very effective diplomatic corps. It was voted onto the UN security council twice in recent history and is well positioned as a voice for small countries. It will not be as easy to bully and isolate as Israel thinks, especially as Israel appears to be betting the farm on going all-in on ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza and hoping Trump will provide unlimited diplomatic cover. Will he be able and willing to do so to the extent that will be required? Let's see shall we.....

by Anonymousreply 32December 22, 2024 5:15 AM

Ireland sent Hitler and Eva Braun an Edible Arrangement when they eloped.

by Anonymousreply 33December 22, 2024 6:37 AM

This does make me wonder, however...

If Putin were to be blown up tomorrow by an unidentified suicide bomber, which countries would send some form of condolence? Most major Western powers still have diplomatic representation in Moscow, and I suspect the majority of countries would do something pro forma.
