Such overwrought performances. Like Timothy Dalton being young and gay in char.
In my opinion, Katherine Hepburn’s masterpiece performance.

This is the film Lee Daniels based the show "Empire" on.

Dalton's character isn't gay. He tricked Anthony Hopkins' character into thinking he loved him.

I agree with R1. The film has a very strong performance by Hepburn and she and O'Toole play off each other well. Of her 4 Oscars, it was probably the one she most deserved.

This is one of my favorite movies. I've always been fascinated about Elinor of Aquitaine and her life. I also loved her in The African Queen.

Tim was gay with Anthony

Lion In Winter is really a family film that involves royals when they had real power. Elinor is an interesting person, and Hepburn acts like never before. I am never quite sure if Hepburn's characters are obtuse or smart. Here she has great words, and more emotional shading than any other film. I love when she tells Henry she slept with his father, and after he leaves in disgust, she states" Well what family doesn't have its ups and downs." O'Toole though is the real stand out. It is hard to put that O'Toole next to Lawrence. He is so manly, forceful, big and real. Of course he played Henry before but never like this. The supporting cast is alright. I find the girl and John to be a bore because they have no depth or range. It is easy to see why Richard was a better king than John, and why the Magna Carta was written and signed under John.

Elinor of Aquitaine was fucking masterful in The African Queen.

A catty story about a fucked up family who happened to have power

Timothy Dalton was a beautiful young man, but this facial hair did him no favors.

I always thought Hepburn was overrated in the last 25 or 30 years of a career only because she outlasted all of her contemporaries.

I disagree that she was overrated. She’s the best, IMO.
She may have lived until 2003, but she we didn’t see much of her after she publicized her autobiography and had a cameo in Love Story.

I didn't know Elinor of Aquitaine was in The African Queen

She WAS the African Queen.

It's not THE Magna Carta, it's just Magna Carta.
Richard might have been better than John but that's not saying much. He was a good soldier and loved war. His impulsive military campaigns drained England's coffers (he was captured during one and England was forced to pay a munificent ransom). At least John's incompetence brought about some dilution of the King's power, although its significance is exaggerated, just like Richard's rule.
"Like all of Henry II’s legitimate sons, he had little or no filial piety, foresight, or sense of responsibility."

The story goes the Mr. Miller, holder of the envelopes, told Ingrid, just before she walked on stage, that she should read carefully—there was a tie. She played it well.

Thank you, OP. I HATED this movie. It was tedious and the performances were hammy.

I like the movie but I loved a London staging of the play from several years ago with Joanna Lumley taking the role of Eleanor of Aquitaine.
