The Philadelphia Story (1940)
I have searched and searched, but could not find one thread dedicated to the George Cukor classic screwball comedy.
How does it hold up in a 2024 lens?
Kate Hepburn, as always, was beautifully regal. Cary Grant charming, James Stewart was the boy next door, and Ruth Hussey was well, Ruth Hussey. The supporting cast includes John Howard, Virginia Weidler, John Halliday, Mary Nash, and the great Roland Young.
Of course, the film was remade as a music in 1956 with Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, and Celeste Holm.

You should t hold any classic film to 2024 standards. This is good because so many films today suck

It's in my Top Five. Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant were great in this and Kate stole the show. Plus they had an immaculate script to work off of.

R2, the script is immaculate, but it's 2024 and the scene between Tracey and her father where he explains his unfaithfulness as a result of not having an adoring daughter is c-r-e-e-p-y.. It just doesn't play well these days.

Even set in 1940, I refuse to accept Katherine Hepburn as young, sweet, fun or sexy.

It's not one of my favorite comedies from Katharine Hepburn. I much prefer "Bringing Up Baby" or "Holiday." Jimmy Stewart won an undeserved Oscar for his one-note performance of an asshole.

Stewart thought they were giving him an "I'm Sorry" Oscar for not giving it to him for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

I love the scene where Jimmy goes to Cary's house drunk. He deserved the Oscar.

Perhaps more than any of her other films, this was the one that established what the public thought Katharine Hepburn was really like.
I adore it! So stylish and fun.

Shirley Booth originated the role that Ruth Hussey played in the film. And Hepburn knew, even as just a supporting character actress, how great Booth could be.
Years later, when Booth finally and deservedly became a leading lady on Broadway with Come Back, Little Sheba, Hepburn stole two of her following successes to play them on film. The Time of the Cuckoo became Summertime and The Desk Set became Desk Set. But even Hepburn knew not to touch Sheba (not that she could have ever played Lola).

I've never seen the movie. But I did see the 1980 Lincoln Center production with Frank Converse and Gwyneth's mom.
And I remember nothing about it, except that Frank Converse was gorgeous.
