'The Pitt' medical drama on HBO
Noah Wyle VOWS to never move on from ER. Also starring Fiona Dourif and a bunch of cute guys.
[quote]‘The Pitt’ is a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a hospital in Pittsburgh. Each episode follows an hour of Dr. Michael Rabinavitch's 15-hour shift as the chief attendant in Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital’s emergency room.
Fifteen episodes, starts January 9th.

Meh - he's done a wide variety of shows since ER.
Unless you're Michael Crichton's heirs who are suing him and the show for copyright infringement, it's a baseless criticism.

Noah Wyle seemed like a gay boy to me when he appeared on ER plus the fact that he married his makeup 💄 artist from the show.
In other news I wonder if they will show any FULL FRONTAL naked men since this is HBO.

Total man crush on him! , the series is very interesting every episode is a 1-hour time frame of a 15-hour day in an ER. It's a very accurate portrayal and at times sad and draining. No nudity yet other than a patient who was a homeless man pissing all over everybody in an exam room.

It is exactly like ER. The only thing missing is the dramatic music when a patient has to receive emergency surgery.
How similar is it? Michael Crichton’s widow is suing because they planned to reboot ER with Wyle, cancelled it and came up with this instead, which is a carbon copy with a different host city.

Thanks, R8. I thought it was just me.
Excellent show. And I don't think it's any more like ER than any other TV hospital show. This show, we will never really see the personal lives of the characters, like we frequently did on ER. Frankly, that's refreshing, and makes the episodes fly by.
I'll we anxiously waiting for the next episode.

[quote]Allegedly Noah and George Clooney were VERY close in the first years of ER. Allegedly.
Yes they even had a European vacation together the first year. The tabloids made a thing about it back then and George's PR went as far to put out a statement that it was "just a guys trip" and the actor who played Dr. Benton was also on the trip. But the Benton guy was photographed elsewhere at the time,
Before the show aired and the paychecks started rolling in, George paid Noah's rent and gave him a car to drive while they were filming the first few episodes.
Poor Noah got dumped when hairdresser Waldo Sanchez joined the ER crew. Waldo was George's main guy for years and is still around as he was a groomsman in George's bearding/wedding and can be seen in the People magazine spread.

Obviously there’s going to be some similarity to ER, but the structure of the show (each episode takes place over an hour and stays in the hospital), minimizes the soap opera stuff and keeps the focus on the ER process more than on the personal lives of the staff.

I feel like I've watched enough ER/hospital dramas for one lifetime.
It feels lazy to me - you can go online on any nurse or doctor or hospital thread, collect stories, then write the episodes.
It's built-in tension and high-drama, but it feels cliche at this point.
If it weren't for hospital and cop shows, there would be so few dramas left.

I binged the first seven episodes and I really love it. I felt moved to watch after articles in Vulture and the NY Times pointed out that actual doctors and nurses love the show, feeling it is more accurate about what they do than any other medical series they’ve seen.

Agree with R40. I was shocked how engrossed I was. I binge watched the first five episodes . Excellent writing. Good character development although as R40 points out, more focus on ER events then personal lives.

I'm not clear how ER was any more original than any other medical drama that's ever been made.
It's essentially St Elsewhere, Grey's Anatomy, Chicago Med, Chicago Hope, Code Black, and The Resident.
House and the Good Doctor are in a slightly different category, but the new show for DL Fav Zachary Quinto, Brilliant Minds, is in that same category.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 3, 2025 8:07 PM

ER was original in that it was focused on the Emergency Department and was quite graphic and gritty for its time.

I actually love medical tv shows, but I love them for the medical drama, not the stupid love life crap. That’s why The Pitt is so good, there’s no time for sappy love stories (and I love love, just not in my medical dramas). Chicago Med was an excellent show for many years btw, I was surprised how much I liked it. It’s not as good lately, it’s running on fumes.

Same R65 and R66 It is NOT a soap opera. That is one of its greatest strengths. The medical issues are more sophisticated; challenges people to think a bit .
Thoughts on that bitch know it all resident ( trying to paint Noah Wylie as a drug user). I was completely taken aback by her absolute stupidity in verbally harassing some father who was intubated ( I think ), calling him a child molestar . I’m waiting for the fallout on that .

R67 Santos has been a needling aggressive bitch from the first episode, leveraging her relative experience as an intern over the medical students.
I assume she is a victim of sexual abuse turned bitter in adulthood? But one of the doctors need to rip her a new one, even if she’s right about the drug theft, she’s not going about it the right way.

House was a Sherlock Holmes pastiche in a hospital. The Good Doctor is about its neurodivergent lead character learning to be a part of his medical community. They a pleasant soapy aspect, as did ER.
The Pitt is really a slice of life and is truly work based, their personal lives are only present by the shadows thrown by their interactions. I like how Ronny’s and Collins’ former relationship is whispered, nor shouted, they way it happens in real life. Long may it continue.

The economy is not what it was in 2007. Millions of soccer moms aren’t insured.
Not American. I’m an epidemiologist, my mother is a retired university professor and we both had to let our medical insurance lapse for 2 years whilst we got her house into a sellable condition after she retired to nurse my suddenly quadriplegic father with polyneuropathy right before lockdown. She wiped out $1.5 million (ie, pretty much all) of her retirement fund caring for him at home and doing pricey last minute home renovations they didn’t do the decades before so he could live and die at home in the manner she chose to provide and he deserved.
IMO the people from all walks of life in ER is the realest thing about the show.

There was a lot of gore in the most recent episode. It certainly presents itself as "realistic"... but it's got melodrama running through it. The head nurse getting her nose punched and she just goes back to work? Dr Rabinovich physically pushing Dr Langdon out the door and he sheepishly leaves clutching his clothes.
I love the series... but I wonder if there will be a second season ... the format where they only show inside the hospital could get a bit old.

I work in a hospital, but not a teaching one. It would be great to see a young, sexy, white gal, perhaps an Aussie, replacing her in the ER, to mix things up a bit. I mean, the Collins character was great but in the post-DEI world, wouldn’t it be great to see Dr Robby with, say, a redhead?

Alan Sepinwall:
"And speaking of David, it seemed inevitable that there would be a mass casualty of some kind this season. And between the potential threat of David and all the talk about Jake (clarified here to be the son of one of Robby’s exes) going to Pittfest, something bad happening there in particular made sense. So we head into the season’s endgame with the terrible news that there’s an active shooter at the festival. Having seen the next few episodes — some of them multiple times, because I’m addicted to this show like few in recent memory — all I can say is, buckle up."

I actually think Dr. Collins is pretty. I will say this about DEI, it's brought a lot of very talented actors and actresses into roles that we'd never have otherwise seen.
Also, remember that the "post-DEI world" would also likely mean fewer gay characters on shows and fewer gay storylines.
What I'd really rather see is Dr. Collins stay and a very hot gay doctor show up next season. Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball) is passably hot, but who knows how long he's going to be around after stealing drugs.

Love Robby- authoritative without being bossy, so damn competent, able to admit when he’s wrong and listens to others, swoon.
Matteo is simply adorable.
Santos- she can leave, stat! Take Garcia with you.
The charge nurse getting punched in the face by that dickhead patient made me audibly gasp. That rarely happens, so, kudos!
I feel bad for David’s mom. I’m hoping he’s not the shooter, but he probably is. I bet Jake’s gf was on his list and Jake got shot (not fatally) protecting her.
I hope Collins is back next season, I like her.

Shawn Hatosy is looking good with the salt and pepper hair. But there can be only one Jack Abbott and he lives in Genoa City, Wisconsin.

I thought that scene was a bit much. A career ER doctor would not be so grief-stricken at deaths of patients . I know it’s the anniversary of the death of his mentor, but that’s a loss he is feeling everyday for four years and I don’t buy that the date itself is so traumatic. He’s obviously sad for his step-son, but he never met the girlfriend. The calm-and-in-charge exterior while breaking down inside is a cliché I didn’t need to revisit.

I agree that the grief about his mentor feels contrived and frankly unnecessary. But that apart, Wylie is killing this season with his performance.
He’ll certainly be up for an Emmy as Lead Actor in a series. But if Stephen Graham is also in that category for “Adolescence,” Wylie would be far from a shoo-in.

How many times in this series have people been taken to "a quiet place" to have "tough" conversations, or break downs, or deep self-reflections. It happens, I suppose, even in an ER... but every episode? It seems a go-to device for the writers. I don't think it's wrong or unusual for Wylie to be so upset he couldn't save the girlfriend, but his rushing back to be alone in a room and rolling around the floor, weeping with collective grief... didn't really work for me. So many other ways to show his "humanity" and pain.
I look forward to the series every week... as was said upthread, it's a different pleasure to have to wait a week rather than streaming a whole series... and the actually medical procedures and the human responses to them (doctors and patients both) are the more interesting to me than the plot. The balloon angioplasty up the femoral artery: "Who did this? Who told you you could do this?!! Don't ever do this again!! ... way to go, that's badass, you saved a life..."

I kind of think the Crichton estate has a point .
[quote] The complaint claimed that when Crichton sold Warner Bros. the screenplay for what became the pilot episode of ER, Warner Bros. promised that no subsequent productions derived from ER would go forward without Crichton's consent. The suit further alleged that after negotiating unsuccessfully with Crichton's estate for nearly a year for the right to reboot ER, Warner Bros. "simply moved the show from Chicago to Pittsburgh, rebranded it The Pitt, and has plowed ahead without any attribution or compensation for Crichton and his heirs."

They were already producing it as an ER reboot with Wyle and John Wells attached.

But then they went in a different direction.

Yeah. They moved it to Pittsburgh and changed Carter’s name. That’s obviously completely different.

That’s not the argument, though —is it?
The argument is they violated the rights as specifically negotiated.

What makes THE PITT different is that the whole season (15 episodes representing 15 successive hours) is taking place in one day during a single shift for the doctors and nurses. And there have been countless series since ER that take place in an emergency room. Netflix has a new series like that, and they also have THE RESIDENT, a series that ran for five or six seasons on the Fox network, also about an emergency room.
On the other hand, Wylie and Wells were indeed working on an ER reboot, so it’s a coin toss as to which way a judge and /or jury will go.
But Crichton was a political reactionary, and this latest wife barely new him. His royalties must be running down or else she wouldn’t have gone for this money grab. But the series is a big hit so she came sniffing around. Contemptible.

There is nothing similar about Wyle's character or the format of the show.
As a matter of fact, Dr. John Carter would have folded like a cheap suit during the shooting aftermath.
They tried to negotiate a spinoff. It didn't work, so they changed gears and retooled a different show. Now, if ANY of the ER main cast shows up, that's a different story. They would clearly be playing on the foundation ER built.
But, this has as much similarity or continuity with ER as any other medical procedural that has aired since. Frankly, if this were successful and if I were Shonda Rimes, I'd be suing too for ripping off Grey's Anatomy,

You can’t look at this in isolation. They signed a contract that they would not further develop the ER concept without Crichton’s permission and they attempted and failed to get that permission, then went ahead anyway. I’m not sure that they are going to be successful saying “well, it’s not exactly like “ER.”

Like it, but it's really diminished as the season has gone on. Novelty goes a long way. After episode 9, it was diminishing returns - not that it was terrible or anything.

Love this show! It concentrates on the medical aspect and how it affects the doctors and nurses etc, and not the personal love life shit. I’m actually rewatching, but I have an incredibly stupid question. I did catch where they said the actual shooter was killed, and it wasn’t the disturbed boy, but were any details revealed as to who the shooter was?

If you want to see more of him, see if you can find a series called "Southland." It's a great series with a gay storyline.

Crichton’s widow is suing, claiming The Pitt is a rip off of ER.
Maybe the surviving creators of St Elsewhere should sue Crichton’s estate for ripping them off in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 297 | April 12, 2025 1:12 PM

I don’t think the estate would have a case against a third party producing this show, but Crichton had a contract with Warner Bros. that said they can’t do it without Crichton’s permission.

r83, worked with Sherry, and ER really burned her out.

The widow claims breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, as well intentional interference with contract.
These are well established “breach” claims under California contract law.

God damn I love Jack Abbot. What a great character. And Shawn Hatosy has the perfect amount of grey hair right now. Love the curls. Yum. I’d definitely be like Myrna and ogle him openly if I saw him.
He’d better be back next season. Maybe they’ll move him to the day shift.

R304,
Yeah, yeah. I get it. But the Widow Crichton started complaining about the show just being an unofficial and unapproved sequel to ER.
Realizing that that argument has no chance of winning, she and her lawyers have now started screaming about a breach of contract law.
They may have a case there, but even then I doubt this will go very far. Their deal went south. The creative team made something different as a result. This happens all the time.
All that said, this will come down to the finer details of the contracts and what actually went down, details none of us really know at the moment.

[quote] Realizing that that argument has no chance of winning, she and her lawyers have now started screaming about a breach of contract law.
That’s absurd. It was always about the contract. There is no other cause of action. You can’t own the idea of a TV show set in an ER.
Their defense is going to have to be that the changes that they made after failing to get the estate’s consent make the show different enough from what was originally discussed that they are not in breach. Probably a losing argument. They are gambling that the damages they will have to pay are more in line with what they were offering the estate than what the estate was asking for..

"You can't own the idea of a TV show set in an ER."
Correct. But essentially, that's what Team Crichton is trying to do. The creatives changed their show significantly, and the Widow Crichton didn't like being left out of this new show. What had originally been discussed was a follow-up/continuation of ER. The creative team went another direction (for whatever reason, and there were probably multiple reasons) and now the Widow Crichton is one angry sourpuss, especially after the show's turned out to be a great success.

No. They had a deal with Warner’s limiting Warner’s ability to produce an ER-like show. They can’t prevent anyone else from making the show, but they can prevent Warner’s, or at least make Warner’s pay them. Because Warner’s AGREED to this.

We really don’t know the details of the contract. If the contract spells out “ER-like” show without details, then yes, they have a case. But if the contract calls out a continuation of the tv show ER, then no.
by Anonymous | reply 313 | April 14, 2025 4:52 PM

It’s neither. No one would be same lame as to agree to either of those. It’s more complicated, based solely on the two main causes of actions.

Of course the contract is open to interpretation. That’s why there’s litigation. If you are really so interested, you can probably read about it (perhaps even read it) in the court filings.

Is it normal for hospital workers not to wear masks while working on patients? That one young kid got pissed on and blood spattered all over him in one day All I could think was "why isn't he wearing a mask?" Is this normal or a production decision for tv?

A YouTube doctor said that Whittaker would have washed his face right away. Not looked horrified and stammered for 30 seconds but right away.
And also the request of the patient who did not want medical student Whittaker to do a procedure on him would have been respected; because Whittaker isn’t an actual doctor, Dr Mohan was right there, patient rights are a thing and they could be opening the hospital up to a lawsuit if even a non-negligent negative result of the procedure had occurred.
He also said that Collins would not have done a second ultrasound on the fetish of the teenager, and that her panic about the medical abortion was for naught because drugs can be prescribed off label.
He liked the show very much, however, and said it was very accurate.
