Why Generation X delivered for Trump

“Generation X delivered the White House to Trump.”

That was the post-election analysis of political writer Philip Klein, who noted this week that people between the ages of 45 and 64 voted for President-elect Donald Trump 53% to 45%. Other generations, both older and younger, went for Vice President Kamala Harris. This result follows several recent articles calling Generation X, my generation, the “Trumpiest” generation.

For those of us in that demographic, born between the mid-1960s and 1980, it’s easy to understand why we went for Trump. For one, we aren’t easily offended — even by Trump, the king of the politically incorrect put-down. Bret Easton Ellis, a popular novelist of Gen X, once noted in an interview that those of us who were teenagers in the 1980s “loved to be offended.”

It’s true. We were born in the 1960s, were children in the ’70s, and were teens in the ’80s. We liked gritty and sexy novels like Tropic of Cancer that were not socially acceptable, as well as loud punk rock and challenging movies. Yet we also love J.R.R. Tolkien, Beethoven, C.S. Lewis, jazz, and Flannery O’Connor — and patriotic movies such as Top Gun.

We were children in 1976 during the bicentennial celebrations of the founding of America, and like the children under communism, we had in our hearts a desire for God and an awareness of the value of freedom. We love America and know Marxism is a lie.

It seemed like our time had come with the collapse of communism in 1989. All of the things Gen X loves — the freedom to read, watch, and say what you want, the acceptance of gay people, including their protection from bullies, the ability to tell jokes and let stuff roll off our backs, and self-reliance — were becoming mainstream around the world.

But that was short-lived. Communism stayed alive in the universities and then spread into the wider culture. If somebody had told us back in 1990 that in 2024 we would have censorship, speech codes, sensitivity readers for novels, and Christian bakers charged with crimes for following their conscience, we would not have believed them.

Hope they enjoy taking in their aged parents whose Social Security and Medicare will be slashed.

by Anonymousreply 1December 12, 2024 12:21 PM

"Generation X" just made a huge fucking enemy with Millennials.

by Anonymousreply 2December 12, 2024 12:28 PM

People that are 64 are not Gen X. They're late boomers. The older end of Gen X is more like 59-60.

by Anonymousreply 3December 12, 2024 12:31 PM

Gen Z also went for Trump...

by Anonymousreply 4December 12, 2024 12:42 PM

Has anybody else noticed Gen X's nasty attitude when it comes to Millennials?

by Anonymousreply 5December 12, 2024 12:42 PM

Interesting that the author of the article mentions Robert Downey Jr as an example of Gen X. But, he voted for Harris.

Gen X were right-wing in their teens and early 20s. I can remember in the late 80s one of my senior managers, who himself was pretty conservative, saying of the new Graduate intake, "That's just not how it should be. You're meant to come out of college left-wing and move right as you age. What are they going to do?"

Well, it seems they started right-wing and moved further to the right.

Who the fuck is linking to articles from this rag??

by Anonymousreply 8December 12, 2024 12:50 PM

Colbert joked about Luigi last night, making it clear he, Stephen, disapproved. But I got the sense the audience didn't.

by Anonymousreply 9December 12, 2024 12:51 PM

R1, Oh, I think we Boomers will escape, and that the cuts will be made palatable because of being set "in the future." Similar to the retirement age goalposts for full SS.

by Anonymousreply 10December 12, 2024 12:53 PM

Oops. I don't know why I, r9, posted here!

by Anonymousreply 11December 12, 2024 12:54 PM

The Washington Examiner is a known conservative rag.

Ignore everything that these idiots write.

by Anonymousreply 12December 12, 2024 12:56 PM

Meanwhile, MSNBC reported last night that 80% of Latino voters went with Trump, which has shocked Dems. Those identifying as 'Latino voter' didn't like Biden's border policies.

by Anonymousreply 13December 12, 2024 1:04 PM

R13, please provide a link. That is absurdly out of line with all other reporting.

Salesforce owner sucks up to dump-making him TIME magazine man of the year.

by Anonymousreply 15December 12, 2024 1:16 PM

I don't know who I hate more, Baby Boomers or Gen X?

by Anonymousreply 16December 12, 2024 1:19 PM

Squabbling across generations is so much fun, but it distracts from the real purpose. Why not go after Trump supporters, who are 100% for him, rather than Gen X, who are 54% for him? Tribalist fingerpointing serves the ruling class.

by Anonymousreply 17December 12, 2024 1:22 PM

And just who is the “ruling class” today?

by Anonymousreply 18December 12, 2024 1:36 PM

R17 This is Millennials' era to be the cunt.

Fuck Gen X and Fuck Gen Z.

Huh?!? Nobody liked gay people in 1989, I was there. Gen X was quite generous with "fag" jokes at that time. Author doesn't live in reality.

by Anonymousreply 20December 12, 2024 1:41 PM

I was born in 1966 and was obsessed with MTV and Slacker and all the GenX things and I’m highly offended by Trump. I think he’s easily the worst thing to ever happen to our modern country.

by Anonymousreply 21December 12, 2024 1:45 PM

I hate this reductionist lumping of entire generations so much.

45% of Gen Xers voted for Harris. That is NOT a Trumpy monolithic clump. And vice versa with seniors and millennials. A whole lot of Trump support among those cohorts.

by Anonymousreply 22December 12, 2024 1:47 PM

Damnit, I hate when I post before I’m finished and I hate that we can’t edit our comments. I also grew up watching Animal House and reading early National Lampoon and still love John Hughes movies, so I’m delighted by offensive comedy.

by Anonymousreply 23December 12, 2024 1:47 PM

Yes stereotyping entire generations works as well as stereotyping entire ethnic groups. I think it’s time for a return to a Marxist analysis of political events. More sensible than this silly shit about MTV and watching Top Gun.

by Anonymousreply 24December 12, 2024 1:54 PM

[quote] Meanwhile, MSNBC reported last night that 80% of Latino voters went with Trump,

80 percent of WHITE voters didn't go for Trump. Don't be absurd.

by Anonymousreply 25December 12, 2024 1:54 PM

"we had in our hearts a desire for God and country and know Marxism is a lie," even though many of our punk rock heroes and Henry Miller made careers around mocking the first two and had a not insignificant amount of respect for Marx.

by Anonymousreply 26December 12, 2024 2:57 PM

They're Trump's most reliable voters.

by Anonymousreply 27December 20, 2024 9:36 AM

Meh, we also became helicopter parents who handed out participation trophies and created safe spaces. I think a lot of Gen X went for Dump because of a “I got mine” attitude and the notion that we don’t have enough money or credit to buy shit we don’t need. I work with so many Gen X like that who moan about paying taxes and stuff costing too much. At a basic level, I think that’s mostly what it is. Many Gen X are selfish.

by Anonymousreply 28December 20, 2024 12:04 PM

They are morons who don't know what commnism is.

by Anonymousreply 29December 20, 2024 12:24 PM

They knew Trump was mentally ill and mentally incompetent. There is nothing they can say about college professors which would justify that, especially as college professors don't run the government and never have. Nonsense bloviating.

by Anonymousreply 30December 20, 2024 12:26 PM

The one college professor who did serve as president, Woodrow Wilson, was a huge disaster.

by Anonymousreply 31December 20, 2024 12:27 PM

I'm a classic GenX and most of that article is worthless drivel. fuck the press is my opinion

by Anonymousreply 33December 20, 2024 1:23 PM

[quote]Nobody liked gay people in 1989, I was there.

Yeah, R20? I was too. And if you think 1989 was bad, you should have "been there" in 1972, when I was out in high school. Or better yet, try the 1950s. IMHO, that was the worst time to be gay in recent history.

I'm so fucking tired of this whining. Watch Mad Men. Watch Far from Heaven. Talk to gays in their 80s. Maybe you'll get some perspective.

by Anonymousreply 34December 20, 2024 1:38 PM

In that sense it is typical of GenZ. They think they are so original, so edgy, and really they are parroting memes paid for by billionaire criminals.

by Anonymousreply 35December 20, 2024 2:29 PM

Eighty percent of Latinos did not vote for Trump. The numbers were more like in the 50s for Harris and 40s (percentiles) went for Trump, but it was a dramatic shift from even 4 years ago when the vast majority voted for Biden. And it was mostly young Latino men who switched their allegiances; after all, Kamala has a vagina. And she's Black.

At the end of the day, Trump won because Harris was tarred with inflation, Biden's legacy, and the overriding factors that she is female and Black. I do not understand why the media isn't talking about misogyny and racism, although I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that MAGAts would just scream that they're racist and misogynist for saying it. In the Trump era, black is white and up is down, and there's little that anyone can do to penetrate that mindset.

When it comes to Gen X turning out for Trump, just listen to them explain why. They feel alienated by shrinking opportunity unlike their boomer peers who they feel (and mostly did) just get things handed to them. The angry straight white Christian men cohort really gets worked up over their perceived slights, and thanks to the dumbing down of our education system that began in earnest just as Xers were entering the system, they have no understanding that their votes actually do matter and change is possible, but they again look at their boomer peers and parents and think that they got their way far more easily than Xers did. Trump told them he would bring immediate change and while on the surface they took that to mean he'd somehow roll inflation back and prices would drop (he can't, they won't, and oh boy are the angry Xers in for an unpleasant surprise when inflation hits double-digits as soon as Trump's first policies roll out regardless of whether it's tariffs or mass deportation, and when both combine the economic bloodbath is going to be legion), they also took that to mean cultural changes will come quickly, too.

And frankly, I hope they do. The time for incremental change is over and we need to just rip the band aid off so that everyone can see and experience the dystopian hellscape that MAGAts want. Things are going to have to get far worse before they begin getting better. It's too bad that Xers will ultimately suffer the most of any of the generations; boomers are fine, and millennials and those younger will benefit from the backlash to Trump, conservativism and the economic collapse coming in the next decade... but Xers will not. They have no retirement savings, they've voted to cut their Social Security and Medicare, and they're going to find themselves on a lonely desert island when their children tell them to fuck right off because it was their votes that precipitated this mess.

by Anonymousreply 36December 20, 2024 5:24 PM

[quote]their boomer peers who they feel (and mostly did) just get things handed to them

Whenever I read some bullshit like this, I laugh and laugh!

Perhaps you meant to say white male Boomers...?

[quote]boomers are fine

This one too -- hahahahaha! If you want to live on my 2K/month (pension + SS), feel free. I'll watch.

by Anonymousreply 37December 20, 2024 7:25 PM

Remember Gen X-ers (45-60-ish) are well into their jobs. They're working stiffs who - over the past few years - have been told in mandatory company meetings that they are inherently racist, misogynistic (even women), homophobic and transphobic by ERG teams and DEI consultants. Social media reinforces this generalization. As the opinion piece suggests - being constantly called out as such could have pushed some Gen X to vote for Trump. Maybe a strategy of trying to "win more flies with honey than vinegar" is worth a shot.

by Anonymousreply 38December 20, 2024 10:05 PM

R37 for someone who loves to bitch about other generations, you sure expect a lot of grace for yourself. How about instead of your snide comments, you get your own affairs in order so we won't hear you whine the next time a hurricane passes through.

by Anonymousreply 39December 20, 2024 11:05 PM

Maybe Gen X is suffering from early onset dementia?

by Anonymousreply 40December 21, 2024 8:07 AM

What an elaborate fantasy R38. None of that justifies installing as president a man they know to be mentally ill and mentally incompetent, even if all of it we re true (and it isn't).

by Anonymousreply 41December 21, 2024 8:22 AM

OMG R38 what little snowflakes those Gen Xers are!

I thought they were the generation of #FAFO and they ate tar for breakfast?

by Anonymousreply 42December 21, 2024 8:31 AM

Stop thinking GenXers were worried about the price of eggs. THey didn't "fall" for lying billionaire propaganda. They literally are BEGGING for the end of the world and civilization as we know it because wibewalls hurt their widdle feelings!

by Anonymousreply 43December 21, 2024 8:35 AM

R43 it is so delicious that Gen X gets to eat crow for the next four years.

by Anonymousreply 44December 21, 2024 8:40 AM

I'm 75; my Aunt is 82; my 3 friends (yes, I have only 3) are 77, 70, and 73.

We loathe Trump and voted for Harris, and for the Democratic ticket going back to McGovern.

by Anonymousreply 45December 21, 2024 10:51 AM

None of you are Gen X
