Is the original sin behind our present situation. I sensed this intuitively as a child, but no one ever believed my counterfactuals. Them running shit would have resulted in the same amount of wealth but none of the drama, what's not to love? Having to wear clogs would be a small price to pay, plus they make such delightful sounds.
