Is "Christmas with the Kranks" (2004) an unsung holiday classic?

Based on John Grisham's "Skipping Christmas", this film adaptation was released twenty years ago as of this November, and was derided by critics at the time of its release. I never really understood why. It is pure Christmas comedy fluff, harmless and extremely entertaining, with heaps of Christmas ambiance. Jamie Lee Curtis plays such a dizzy bitch in it. I honestly think it's one of her funniest performances.

Agreed!

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Christmas with the Kranks is NOT a holiday classic. It is a GODLESS, joyless mess, full of greed, selfishness, and people who have completely forgotten the reason for the season. WHERE is the reverence for Jesus? WHERE is the spirit of giving? Instead, we get a movie about skipping Christmas for a CRUISE. A CRUISE!!! What is this world coming to?

The whole film is drenched in chaos and materialism, and by the end, when they finally try to “redeem” themselves, it feels hollow because their hearts were not in the right place to begin with! I’ll stick with The Nativity Story, thank you very much.

I find it helps whilst watching this movie to imagine that everyone involved is absolutely insane.

by Anonymousreply 3December 11, 2024 4:53 AM

Roger Ebert disliked it GREATLY.

I must believe that R2 is trolling, but if not, I think all of the things they've mentioned are kind of the point of the movie. It is a bizarre movie, but that is part of the charm of it.

I thought it was fun-twists and turns and Dan Ackroyd was great- it’s silly fun.

by Anonymousreply 6December 11, 2024 5:30 AM

It’s good but that was before I divorced Jamie Leigh so I may feel differently.I know too much about this narcissistic +.

The book is better than the movie. If they stayed true to the book it would’ve been better. The book is more The Family Stone meets National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, this movie like Dude, Where’s My Car?

I just watched it again a week or so ago. Some funny moments but one of those movies where the characters go overboard trying to convince you how wacky and hilarious everything going on is so it just feels exhausting

by Anonymousreply 9December 11, 2024 6:21 AM

Personally,I consider admitting to enjoying this movie a massive red flag regarding taste and mental wellbeing.

by Anonymousreply 10December 11, 2024 7:39 AM

You lost me at Christmas comedy and John Grisham. WTF?

by Anonymousreply 11December 11, 2024 8:10 AM

R11 this is only part of its madness

by Anonymousreply 12December 11, 2024 3:56 PM

I saw it as a 13 year old and thought it was idiotic.

by Anonymousreply 13December 12, 2024 11:10 AM

R13 I saw it in the theater when I was the same age as you were. I knew it was stupid, but I still enjoyed it, and the same is true today.

I enjoyed the book greatly. The film is just ok. It’s harmless enough.

In both the book and film, the fairly jaded couple are redeemed by their love for their daughter and the forgiveness they get from their neighbours. Ultimately, their eyes are opened to the suffering and goodness surrounding them. It’s a good Christmas message.

by Anonymousreply 15December 13, 2024 4:56 AM

It's obviously a modern classic.

I googled "jamie lee curtis hates tim allen" and apparently she doesn't, at least publicly. I assumed they would have fought like feral cats since he's such an asshole and she seems really confrontational.

No, my two most hated celebrities are on it

by Anonymousreply 18December 13, 2024 10:37 PM

It's cute and goofy. The scene with the canned ham at the supermarket really made me laugh though.

by Anonymousreply 19December 13, 2024 11:31 PM

Tim and JLC had great chemistry. Too bad the movie was so over the top

by Anonymousreply 20December 14, 2024 5:51 PM

JLC in that hideous schoolteacher's Christmas vest, primping herself and chugging wine thinking she's about to get fucked, only to have Tim Allen pitch the "let's skip Christmas" bit never fails to make me laugh.
