Ukraine is receiving $20 billion loan from US taken from Russian assets
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 11, 2024 2:56 PM |
From the article:
After extended deliberations over how that money could be used to aid Ukraine, officials agreed that they would use the interest that the assets were earning to back a loan. That approach effectively forces Russia to pay for the damage it has caused in Ukraine, and has allowed the United States and Europe to provide aid without putting an additional economic burden on their taxpayers.
The loan represented a policy achievement for the Biden administration and Ms. Yellen. It came after months of deliberations about how to provide more aid to Ukraine as the appetite in the United States for giving it more money has been waning.
The United States and Europe also viewed the loan, which will be disbursed to Ukraine in tranches, as a way to ensure that it would continue to have economic resources even if Mr. Trump won the election.

They should have done this 6 months after the invasion. At this point it's probably too late to make much of an impact, especially since Trump and the Republicans are going to do all they can to remove all the US sanctions imposed on Russia since February 2022.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 11, 2024 2:27 AM |
Republicans will not agree to lift sanctions—that will fail…Trump is in his own there.

I was waiting for a naysayer like R6, and she didn't arrive in record time? But I'm happy to prove R6 wrong, as I quote from the Times article:
"In theory, Mr. Trump could try to unravel the loan by reversing the sanctions that keep Russia’s central bank assets frozen. However, Republicans would probably oppose such a move and it would not affect Europe’s portion of the loan."
And you know, R6? I'm pretty sure $20 billion will make a difference. Now kindly fuck off.

She doesn’t have that much money. Come on!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 11, 2024 2:39 AM |
R7 Sorry, that is a given. Trump and Putin have captured the Republicans. The overwhelming majority of sanctions on Russia , especially the impactful ones, will be gone before the end of 2025.

Good.
Putin’s regime is collapsing even as we speak.
Look at how fast his Syrian puppet lost control. Poof! Just like that.

I'm R10, and I'm a smacked ass who thinks he knows better than anyone else.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | December 11, 2024 2:48 AM |
R12 No, but I have been very much involved with sanctions as principle role of my job for almost 20 years, and I have a thorough understanding of the what they entail and how each different administration approaches them. The second Trump term will have little to no guardrails, especially in regards to foreign policy. The majority of Russian sanctions will be either systematically removed or their basic conditions will be all but gutted.

R13, $20 billion is going into the World Bank for Ukraine. How does Dump take that back? As the Times said, and I'll repost it:
"In theory, Mr. Trump could try to unravel the loan by reversing the sanctions that keep Russia’s central bank assets frozen. However, Republicans would probably oppose such a move and it would not affect Europe’s portion of the loan."
Also worth reposting: "it would not affect Europe’s portion of the loan."

R13 if you can’t spell your “role” correctly, what else are you good for?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 11, 2024 3:03 AM |
There is a bit of a halting translation in R13's use of the language, isn't there? And yet she's "very involved with sanctions" with her fancy job!

To the Russian bot at R13 or whatever foreign troll you happen to be, here's a lesson--in English:
A principle is a rule, a law, a guideline, or a fact. A principal is the headmaster of a school or a person who's in charge of certain things in a company. Principal is also an adjective that means original, first, or most important.
R13, you really suck at what you're trying to pull off. Back to bot school for you!

Putin and weapons makers already won look at the map. The whole eastern portion of Ukraine has been taken as part or Russia.

Oh, have they, R18? And your attempt at English remains terrible.

Biden has been, doing things very quietly for weeks even during the campaign to safeguard as much as possible. And ever since Kamala came back to her day job as VP she has been doing the same. They have been reviewing all kinds of shit from every cabinet level department and top line agency that is in peril. Cabinet Secretaries and their staff have put together a comprehensive list of priorities to review that may need protecting. Where ever it is possible they are trying to protect as much as they can.

I will also add that hopefully they re also looking at what they can live without. Trump's guys are on a mission. So if the transition teams can give up some "fat" they should. When Vivek and Leo claim they will cut 75% and eliminate certain departments, they're exaggerating but there's no doubt in my mind that the federal gov't in general, can cut about 25-30% and still function and maintain certain critical programs.

"In theory, Mr. Trump could try to unravel the loan by reversing the sanctions that keep Russia’s central bank assets frozen. However, Republicans would probably oppose such a move and it would not affect Europe’s portion of the loan."
Traditionally, congressional Republicans would definitely oppose this move, but MAGA has changed some of them. I wonder if Trump will try to make them bend the knee on this.

There are a number of Republicans who have always strongly supported Ukraine. We'll see how they hold up, but this deal with Europe will guarantee that Ukraine will get a significant amount of aid regardless of what Dump attempts to do. Sorry that chaps the asses of the naysayers and the trolls here, but fuck you.

Biden needs to press the Red Button and decimate Russia's largest cities- as well as Putin's multiple palace bunkers.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 11, 2024 11:00 AM |
Yeah it would be worth losing NYC, Chicago, Miami, New Orleans and most of our movie stars when LA gets nuked, r31. All so we can destroy some ugly Russian cities filled with people who didn't vote for Putin.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 11, 2024 11:39 AM |
The total loan is $50 billion, $20 billion of which has immediately been wired to the World Bank, with the other $30 billion coming from Europe.

How many Republican Senators succeeded in blocking aid to Ukraine in the past year? It seems to me I recall that happening. So if Biden can get them the money and insulate it from Trump's mischief, it's all to the good. And what a lot of MAGAts don't get is that most of the money goes to our own defense contractors who are building weapons systems and other material for War. it affects our economy. The reason the war dragged out, and this is just my own observation, is to weaken Russia. The USA and NATO deliberately fucked Russia up and used Ukraine to do it. The war has been devastating to Ukraine, and thousands have died. But the biggest effect has been the weakening of Russia and the Putin regime. Even if negotiations begin, it's best to be in a position of strength when Zelenskiyy comes to the table.

You’ve got it ass-backwards. Before you needed 60 votes to help Ukraine—we got the votes. Now, you’d need 60 votes to help Russia—ain’t gonna happen.
